That's funny because when I applied for the last two jobs I've had they were contract and the question was "tell us why you are okay with only having this job for 6 months." :)
I think it's actually harder to think of reasons to flee a job you don't have yet without sounding like you don't want it at all!
I've only had three interviews so far but on the job questionnaire things they give on applications the "how long do you see yourself doing this job?" shit seems to fall in the "none of your business" category for me.
It's one of those things where it feels like they are goading you into making an outrageous claim so they can turn around and say "No way we're going to hire her! She's totally full of shit!" And why would any one commit to staying for 6 years in an entry level position? Doesn't that imply a lack of ambition and zest for life if they are content with minimum wage and wretched hours doing thankless work like selling people cell phone accessories?
I don't know how complex the psychology behind all of this is, but the idea that this isn't thought out thoroughly is almost more depressing than the thought that these questions might really reveal some genuine aspect of my personality that I didn't know I was showing.
Sometimes I think they have a person in mind when they start hiring, like basically the last person who had the job. It reminds me of that "Sex in the City" episode where the brown-haired one has decided that now that she's married she doesn't want to work anymore and so she sets about hiring her replacement and she is looking for someone who is more or less exactly like her. It's kind of lame, but kind of understandable too.
