‘Some 21st birthday this was,’ Alicia thought to herself.

Over the past month her paternal grandmother, her maternal uncle, her elder brother, and her younger brother had died and she didn’t have any clue what do or than try to take care of herself and her younger sister, Kendra.

Alicia sighed and turned on the TV. The news was on nonstop these days. The anchor woman had a mask over her face and was basically yelling so she could be heard behind it.

“50 more deaths have been confirmed,” the anchorwoman said. “Doctors haven’t found the cause of the virus and are still working on it.”

“Well that’s obvious,” Alicia said out loud.

She walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge. They were almost out of groceries and she didn’t have much money left to go buy anything.

“Alicia!”

She leaned over and saw the front door fly open. Kendra ran inside.

“What?”

“They’ve closed down the high school,” Kendra said trying to catch her breath. She bent over and clutched her knees.

“Why?”

“Uh, in case you haven’t noticed there’s this virus going around that’s killed 1/3 of the population of this city if not the country?”

Alicia rolled her eyes. “No need to be sarcastic, Kendra.”

Kendra grinned. “Ah come on, we have to keep our heads above us! We can’t let this thing get us down.”

Alicia shook her head. “We’re almost out of food.”

“I told you that you shouldn’t have gotten up last night.”

“Kendra, be serious!”

Kendra shrugged. “What are we going to do?”

Alicia was quiet as she walked back toward the living room. Kendra followed her.

“I hate to say it, but we might have to steal.”

“Oh that’s cool with me.”

“Kendra!”

“Don’t be such a prissy, Alicia. We have to eat!”

Alicia bit her bottom lip. “I know, but you know what granny said about stealing.”

“Yeah, I know, but she’s dead and if you don’t want to see her in the afterlife, we’re either going to steal or die.”

“You don’t have to be so blunt,” Alicia mumbled.

Kendra cheesed. “It’s all a part of my charm, big sis!”

Alicia shook her head. When had Kendra become so cynical?

“So where are we going to go?”

“Well the owners of the Piggy Wiggly died and they’re understaffed, so maybe we should try there?”

“Yeah, but they have the worst food,” Kendra said. “What about the Brookshire’s?”

“It’s too far away,” Alicia said. “Piggy Wiggly will do fine.”

“Fiiinnne,” Kendra said. “Let’s go.”
