Kantarou and his mom

I'm in the process of scanning vol 14, but while I was skimming through it I came across a page that I thought illustrated the kind of person Kantarou is and the kind of relationship he has with his mom pretty well, and it was easy for me to read so I translated it

Neat, thanks! Nice timing too, I was looking through vol 13 again just last night and it really made me curious about their relationship. Kantarou seems to switch between hatred and jealousy? I'm sure her influence does explain a lot about his character though.

From what I can tell at this point he really only has his mom and the youkai he talks to, also his mom had a similar issue as a child. Though in her case instead of embracing youkai as companions she pushed them away. I think when when she had Kantarou he became like the only thing in her life that was close to her so it's made this strange codependent relationship for them. She teases him a lot to provoke reactions and doesn't explain a lot to him. Which makes Kantarou this strange sort of angry possessive little kid.

That makes sense. So she actually does have some exorcist/spiritual ability then? Her fainting or whatever it is in the first part and Kantarou's scowl made it seem like she's just putting on a show, but I can't read enough to tell if she was only faking it or why.

I find this character development & background stuff really interesting. :-) I tried to make sense of v13's page 55 with the picture of the classic-style tengu on it, but my meager skills and Google don't get very far, so I only got a rough gist. But with this page added, it seems like she's jealous of his obsession too. They're really two of a kind, I suppose.

Yeah, I think she also might be afraid something horrible might happen to him since he's so friendly with youkai.

Well I have the summery and download for vol 14 ready! But for some reason it's in a queue right now, so maybe it will show up later.
