The worst of it was, that he couldn’t help but think it was his fault and the bit that knew it wasn’t, was so angry at Elsie that it couldn’t even think straight.
At least he is taking some of the blame. In many ways what Mrs Hughes did in taking from the larder is more justifiable than what he did last series.
once you had given someone so much of yourself that no-one else wanted what was left - you might as well let them have everything
Charles Carson, you, sir, are a fool. Now go back to that cottage and tell her that you want what's left!

I just think the idea of her having to try and scrape a living when her reputation has been shattered is horrific. I might continue it though... once I've finished the other three-hundred things I've got going on :)

(I dismissed is at really not being possible... I mean Bates, Branson, Thomas, O´Brien... they all still work there. And even though Ethel got dismissed, they´re still caring for her.)
I really like your take on what could have happened in a more grim scenario. I´ve only seen bits and pieces of the episode so far (ITV player mucking up horribly) so I don´t know yet how displeased I am with Carson...
He really seems quite torn between his feelings and his abominable sense of dignity.

There are more scenes in my head I just need to more hours in the day to finish them :)

so sad so sad! When he’d asked why she was there, why she had chosen to stay with Ethel after all that had happened, she had simply looked at him and pointed out that once you had given someone so much of yourself that no-one else wanted what was left - you might as well let them have everything.
how could he leave her like that after this? HOW??? ç_ç
of course i loved it, but i'm waiting for the happy ending sequel =D

Secondly, this is even more heartwrenching than the actual episode, but I really love it very much. Both because you've managed to perfectly show Charles's anger and sense of guilt, which it's eating him little by little, and Elsie's pride and good nature. Now, you'd better make Charles redeem himself or I could kill him.

As for redemtion I think he'll try but whether Elsie will let him...

I'll patiently wait for the sequel. Or any other of your stories' sequel. ;)

The next chapter of For His Own Sake should be ready tomorrow :)

The idea of the Grantham family not being the understanding, caring employers that they are but rather hard correct arictocrats who don't accept any questionable behaviour by their employees was really a nice different take on them. :)
I love how Charles regrets his decision to say something in the first place and then being one of the reasons why she loses her job, but also his anger at her for putting him and herself in such a position.
Charles Carson was a practical man though and he knew that no amount of wishing would make it so.
... Dear Charles... then stop wishing and be practical. The woman is quite unmarried you know...
I just hope that there'll be a sequel with a happy ending. ;)

There will likely be a sequel but whether it'll be happy or not is still up for debate
