A/N: Another invention fic that I wrote a while ago. The bandaid was invented in 1920.
Mrs. Hughes pursed her lips and shook her head, “Oh stop being such a baby and let me see.”
Carson huffed and pulled his hand back. “I can do it myself. I am not a child.”
“Fine.” She said handing him the tweezers then placing her hands on her hips. She knew full well he couldn’t manage this delicate bit of work and she was determined to stay and watch his attempt.
He sat with purpose and looked closely at the small wound. He fumbled and struggled, his large hands no match for the tiny splinter. He finally yielded and handed the tweezers back to her.
“Hmmpf,” he muttered in defeat.
She then sat down beside him and took his hand in hers, running her finger over the reddened skin. The big man twitched at the jolt of pain she created. He distinctly heard her mumble “stubborn” under her breath. He wanted to be cross, but could only feel relief when in no time at all she removed the small bit of pesky wood. She placed a small piece of sticky plastic over the wound.
“There, that wasn’t so bad now was it?” her voice was smug in victory.
He held up his finger and looked at it. “Mrs. Hughes, what the devil is that?”
“It’s called a band aid, some new-fangled invention to easily cover up cuts and keep them clean.” She watched in amusement as he continued to stare at his finger.
He touched it gingerly; surprised that it still smarted. He shook his head, “How could something so small be so difficult?” He narrowed his eyes as he looked at her, but his features suddenly softened. “Then again, sometimes small can be an invaluable asset.” He turned over her smaller hand in his larger one and stroked his thumb across her open palm. “And you’re far prettier than Androcles.”
“I’ll remember that if I should ever get thrown to the lions.” She replied.
Far away somewhere, someone was calling her name.
He let go of her hand. “Thank you, Mrs. Hughes.”
“You’re welcome, Mr. Carson.” Elsie stood and headed off to see who was in need of her assistance now, her hand still tingling where he had touched her.
