Medical Mystery Child

Annaliese has painful bruised palms on her hands and a hip that hurts too much to move.  She's not walked since the day before yesterday, and spent the whole night on her back.  They wheeled her through the doctor's office yesterday and through the hospital to have an Xray done.

Anyone ever hear of this?

Oh dear. sounds less-than fun. I've heard of Paget's disease, which is characterized by bone pain, but, she's really, really young for it.

Where's House when you need him?

Hopefully, it's not Lupus: Inflammation is considered the primary feature of lupus. Inflammation, which in Latin means "set on fire," is characterized by pain, heat, redness, swelling and loss of function, either on the inside or on the outside of the body (or both).

But as House says, "It's not Lupus." Other than that, I have no clue. I think fibromyalgia starts closer to 11. Lyme disease is unlikely if she hasn't been around ticks.

I was totally thinking of Dr. House when I wrote this! I would love to have him on the case, only he would be bored because she didn't code in the xray machine, thank goodness.

So the possibilities we were looking at were A. Trauma (like Alice said, but she had no memory of falling or hurting herself) B. Infection in the joint, which would be supported by the bruising on the palms or C. a virus that settled itself in the joint synovial fluid.

Her SED rate and CBC levels looked great, which rules out option B. Her x ray looked great, which rules out option A. So we are going with option C by default. Her palms aren't actually bruised, but swollen and painful.

Good news is she is back to walking. It hurts when she skips, jumps, or attempts to hyperflex the joint, but normal kid movement is okay. She is looking forward to using her hands again, though.

Thanks for the suggestions and well wishes!
