chapter 11 ---
Changmin doesn't go into detail but he does tell Yoochun to conveniently leave exit door 18 unlocked on his way back to the office. There are things to do tonight and nothing, absolutely nothing is going to stand in his way of being with Yunho again.
Heechul seems pleased.
"I am pleased," Heechul informs him sagely after Yoochun's taken his leave with a hug and a wink in Changmin's direction. "And as such, to ensure that my pleased state of being continues, I have to ask...do you need help?"
"No," Changmin says firmly, "I can't risk having anything go wrong."
Heechul raises an eyebrow and touches his ear, rubbing at his earlobe for a little while, thumb brushing over the big, diamond stud found there. "I'm just saying...I could be of help..."
"No."
Heechul rubs at his earring some more. "I'm just saying..."
"Thank you, Heechul-hyung. I get it. But no."
"Oh my god," Heechul says with a long-suffering sigh, taking off his earring with an annoyed huff before walking over to Changmin. He yanks the younger man's hand open and drops the diamond stud into it. "Put it on. Its mechanisms are beyond your measly human brain's capacity so don't even ask me how or why, but put it on, press it four times, and it'll turn you invisible. Changmin, just do it. Stop being a fail and go."
"Oh..." Changmin replies brilliantly. "Thanks, hyung."
---
Everything falls in place after that. Changmin finds an EpiPen in his first aid kit and after going over the blueprints and plan in his head a couple more times, there's only one more thing he needs: Junsu.
At a quarter past one, Changmin winds up at Junsu's, letting himself in with the spare key conveniently left inside the ceramic dolphin that's he had given Junsu two birthday's ago. It's obvious that his best friend is asleep but everything is riding on tonight and Changmin's only going to get one chance, one forty-second slot and he can't let it go to waste. Changmin walks straight to the source of the snores, not even bothering to knock before he barges into the bedroom, kicking at Junsu's bed to get the older man to wake up. After a few seconds of numerous pokes to the ribs and another few seconds of suffocation via pillow, Junsu awakens, screaming bloody murder and something about apple pies.
"What- what- Changmin?!"
Changmin stares at him calmly, dressed in standard night camouflage gear of black and nods, "Hyung, I'm breaking Yunho out and I need your help."
The second Changmin had called him hyung, Junsu had known it was serious, sitting up in his bed as he rubs the sleep out of his eyes to make sure he's not dreaming. "Did you just say you're breaking Yunho out tonight...and that you need my help?" After a few seconds of silence and a nod from Changmin, Junsu swings his legs over the bed, cracking his knuckles with a smile, "Let's go ninja on their asses."
That's when Changmin thinks maybe he should've taken Heechul's help when the older man had offered it.
Half an hour later and Junsu's been dragged to Changmin's where he asks for Heechul's help in dressing his friend, having found nothing but blazers and tank tops in Junsu's closet, none of which were suitable for the role that Changmins needs Junsu to be.
"All you have to do is talk to the guard for a little while, chat him up about a baseball game or about how there's a new shipment of coffee beans. I don't care, just wait until it gets to 3:03 before you give him the coffee. He can't drink it until then," Changmin says, going over the plan one last time.
Junsu nods, wearing a typical pair of jeans and Starbucks polo that Heechul had someone managed to find in his luggage. "Do we need to coordinate watches and stuff like they do in Mission Impossible? Do I get a flashy weapon or something? And what am I supposed to do again after I deliver the coffee?"
"You run," Changmin tells him flatly as he reaches for Junsu's watch. "And you don't look back. Go straight to the staircase and wait. I'll be there before 3:05 and that door has to be open. Has to be open," he emphasizes, staring Junsu in the eyes.
"Got it!"
"And try not to sound so happy," Changmin sighs, "you could die you know."
Junsu pales at that and Changmin's about ready to just do it all himself when Heechul walks past, handing Junsu a charm with a four-leaf clover. "For good luck. You humans may not have the proper sciences to manufacture actual luck, but we do. It'll keep you alive." He winks at Changmin from behind and mouths, "Total bullshit."
Changmin leaves the house at half past two, sitting shotgun with the diamond earring safely on as they get the coffee and go.
Muscles laced with tension and heart pumping nothing but apprehension and the desire for someone he never should've let go in the first place, Changmin waits. There's only one time that's the right time and nothing, nothing, nothing can go wrong.
---
So, things go wrong.
The right thing about everything else going wrong is that he finally has Yunho back in his arms, but that was a given, anyway. He can barely hear himself above the shrieks of the alarms in the building and Yunho pointedly yelling at him for being an idiot and Changmin almost has to retreat to his quiet, happy place in order not to tear his own face off.
In making sure that nothing could affect him and screw things up, Changmin had screwed things up for himself.
---
The plan was going along just fine, Changmin standing deathly still behind Junsu as the older man is let into the building at 3 am sharp, steaming hot coffee in his hands. It had taken a while for him to get used to being invisibile but it's actually really cool.
Steering Junsu through the hallways and elevators, it took less than two minutes to get up to Yunho's room, the huge, intimidating bodyguard welcoming his coffee with a half-smirk and a pat on Junsu's back.
All Changmin had to do was wait another minute. Just one more.
But all it took was the guard opening the little window slot on the door to check in on how Yunho was doing and Changmin lost it, eyes widening at the brief glance he got of his boyfriend lying on the floor, curled up in pain or sadness or hunger or all of the above. He snaps. The guard barely got a sip of coffee before Changmin's hitting him hard in the back of the neck, shoving Junsu to run away, not saying a word as he grabs a heavy ring of keys to unlock and wrench the door open.
Junsu looks around in disorientation before picking up the keys that Changmin had dropped, running down the hallway, almost dropping them again when a beeping, shrieking, shrill alarm starts blaring overhead.
Throwing a worried look over his shoulder at an empty hallway, Junsu digs out the four leaf clover from his pocket and drops it on the floor for Changmin to pick up later.
There's nothing wrong with a little bit of extra luck.
---
"What did you do!!" Yunho yells at Changmin, jabbing him in the shoulder. "It took you long enough to get here and now you're going to get both of us killed!? And how did you materialize out of thin air!? ...Are you wearing Heechul's invisirring!?"
"I- I-" Changmin stutters, so angry and frustrated and scared and so many things, staring down at Yunho's hollow cheeks and too-big eyes, skin pale from pain and mistreatment. "I- Yunho!"
"What!"
"I missed you, damn it!" Changmin almost screams, lower lip quivering just a bit, ruining his image of angry impassiveness.
Yunho stares at him for a second and a half, a second and a half longer than they can afford before sighing. He struggles to get to his feet, unused to having to use so much strength anymore. "Help me get up," he hisses as he clings to Changmin's body, trying his best to stand, "we have to get out of here."
Changmin shoves him against a wall and unceremoniously yanks Yunho's pants down.
"Well I really missed you too but-"
"Oh will you shut up!" Changmin snaps, sniffling dramatically, rather comically if he wasn't so worried that they're about to die because of his own impatience. He fumbles the EpiPen out and uncaps it with his teeth, finding a spot on Yunho's inner thigh before stabbing him with it.
"Ow!" Yunho yells, batting at Changmin's head, "You leave me here and come back just so you can stab me?"
"It's an epinephren shot," Changmin answers, pulling Yunho's pants back up before standing, looking into the older man's eyes with panic. "Replacement for adrenaline. It's going to give you energy and you're going to run with me the second, the very second you feel it start to work, got it?"
Yunho stares at the younger man with wide eyes and nods. "What about the alarm?" he asks quietly, wishing he could take his eyes off of Changmin for one second to give the open door a glance. "Aren't people coming?"
"Forget the alarm," Changmin whispers, reaching up to touch Yunho's cheek. His fingers brush over too sharp cheekbones to still plump lips and he cringes with regret, wishing he could take everything back. "Forget everything, Yunho-yah. None of it matters anymore. I finally have you."
Yunho remains still to stare at Changmin a little longer, his heart starting to race, his pupils dilating bit by bit. It only takes seconds before he's thrumming with energy and excitement, looking at Changmin with a big, dizzying smile. "Ready," he says softly, leaning forward to press his lips gently to Changmin's, his heart ramming so hard right now that he feels like running forever until nothing can touch the two of them. "By the way, you've always had me, idiot. And I love you too."
---
Changmin's interrupted halfway through a reply by an intensified round of wailing alarms and repetitive "Code Red Emergency" blarings, and if he listens closely enough, there's the heavy clatter of footsteps from somewhere too close. Grabbing Yunho's arm, he moves towards the door, not a single glance spared for the guard still unconscious on the floor and they run for it. There's no time for kissing or hugging and since Changmin had spent seconds too many just holding Yunho before, his entire schedule and plan now useless.
"Come on, come on," he mumbles, shoving Yunho ahead of him down the long hallway when he hears the staircase door on the opposite end of the hallway bang open. Changmin grabs his gun and hands Yunho a smaller pistol, turning around midway to fire off some shots. "Go!" he yells, pushing Yunho ahead. If anything, he's the one with the bullet-proof vest on and right now Yunho is his first priority as he should've been from the very beginning.
There's at least a dozen agents and no matter how fast they run, it seems as if they're are faster and not only that, they're increasing in number by the second. Despite Changmin's repeated yells to go first, Yunho's right there when the fighting starts, side by side and thighs pressing.
"As if I'd leave you," Yunho scoffs before the first punch is thrown, ducking and kicking with more finesse than Changmin's seen Yoochun ever display. "I'm Jaejoong's personal bodyguard, remember? You think I don't know how to fight?"
Changmin doesn't bother replying although he probably would were it not for the gunshot that narrowly misses his temple. He swerves just in time, a well-aimed kick to the agent's jaw that sends him down. And from then on it's just good old-fashioned fighting, man to man or rather, Homin to Agents.
Yunho keeps up far better than even Changmin and by his fifth takedown, he's feeling better than he has in months. Of course it's the adrenaline talking and of course it runs out just as fast as it had come, his limbs weakening and slowing down on him as he's dodging punches.
He barely gets out a cry of Changmin's name before the younger man is there, gunshot to the agent's head, the first actual kill of the night. There's no going back from this no matter if Changmin kills or not and now that Yunho's strength is running out again, they've got to hurry. Missing another gunshot by pure chance, Changmin trips over a body and goes sprawling as they run, coming face to face with a small, crumpled four-leaf clover.
He almost grins but chooses to grab it instead, stumbling back to his feet as he drags Yunho forward by the waist of his pants, shoving the clover down the older man's underwear.
An agent appears out of nowhere and Changmin's head would be on the floor, completely unattached to his body if Yunho hadn't dragged him forward in a big hug and flipped him over. Changmin flails in disorientation as the floor suddenly becomes the ceiling and he hears a grunt of pain before he gets his bearings again, looking around with wide eyes, Yunho slouched forward with his hands resting on his knees, panting hard. The adrenaline's really starting to run out and Yunho's being pushed to his limits like this.
But damn, was that cool.
After what seems like forever, Changmin finds enough time to reach into his pockets for a smoke bomb courtesy of his special FBI agent kit, throwing it with perfect aim as he turns and runs, Yunho's hand laced tightly with his the entire time.
They get to the staircase before the smoke spreads and Junsu's waiting, face pale and shaking, a heavy ring of keys in his hands. Changmin doesn't bother with words, grabbing the keys and locking the door from the inside, running down the stairs three at a time as soon as he throws the keys out the window. Yunho's sliding down the raillings and doing ninja kicks off walls and Changmin almost trips and rolls down the stairs when he gets distracted with staring.
"Run!' Changmin starts to shout as soon as they slam the staircase door open and are greeted with blissful, delicious night air. "We don't have much ti-"
And just then, a car looking suspiciously similar to Yunho's old capsule-car comes screeching into the parking lot, Donghae nearly falling out of the window as he waves, big smile on his face.
Heechul waves from the driver's seat and Changmin sets off on a dead sprint before the car's even fully stopped, dragging Yunho behind him, hands locked together with no intention of letting go. He can tell that the epinephrine shot has run out entirely now, catching Yunho in his arms and carrying the older man straight into the backseat. Junsu's barely in the car before Heechul's gunning the gas, their capsule-car somehow rigged to go much faster than the one Yunho's left for Changmin.
Breathing heavily and his blood still drumming in his ears, Changmin bends to stroke Yunho's jaw gently, kissing the older man with that very same exhale he uses to tell Yunho something more important than anything.
"I love you."
Yunho smiles up tiredly, too tired to even move, his eyes following Changmin's every movement. He forces his deadweight arm to move and sticks his hand down his pants much to Junsu's dismay, Changmin hitting his friend in the head for making such a commotion as Yunho fumbles something out.
"Was it really necessary to bestow luck upon my cock?" Yunho asks with a smile. He would laugh if he had the energy but as it stands, he just holds the crumpled but alive four-leaf clover in his fingers, looking up at Changmin with amusement.
"Well, it's still alive, isn't it? That's what matters the most to me," Changmin mumbles with a small pout, not holding it for very long, choosing to smile instead, laughing when Yunho pouts back at him.
One leaf suddenly unhinges and drifts down to land on Yunho's chest.
"Ah," Junsu says flatly.
Changmin picks up the small leaf and squints at it, turning it over between his fingers. "It's construction paper."
Heechul clears his throat in the driver's seat.
"Ah," Junsu repeats.
"Look, a spaceship!" Donghae exclaims, pointing out the window, ignoring everyone else completely.
"Like I'd believe that!" Junsu yells, about to throw a fit, "so much for good luck! Lies! Lies and slander! And now you're really trying to get me to believe that there's a spaceship coming down to beam us-"
There's suddenly a rumble and everyone screams as the car lifts off from the ground, wobbling and floating higher and higher in the air. Junsu presses himself against the glass and watches as he departs from the ground, eyes growing to the size of saucers.
"What's...going on?" Changmin asks, eyes just as big as he looks around in shock, choking a bit on his spit when the tip of the Empire State Building passes within two feet of the car window.
Yunho just smiles.
---
"Are we safe?" Junsu asks quietly after the car drops back to land on something solid. He looks around at the chamber they're currently in, scratching his head curiously, wondering what's going on.
"Safe...isn't how I would describe-"
"Where the hell has everyone been!?" Jaejoong roars, nearly ripping the car door off its hinge as he wrenches it open. "Yunja!! Goddammit I almost had a heart attack from waiting and you probably gave me five years' worth of wrinkles from worrying and do you know how hard it is to get placenta cream back home because let me tell you, it's not easy at all and I'm running out anyway and you guys probably wouldn't have come back at all if I hadn't taken the initiative to come down myself to save you gloriously with my genius and-"
"Who are you? What are you?" Changmin interrupts.
"Jaejoong," Yunho finishes with a sigh, rolling his eyes, watching with fondness as Changmin's eye twitches to the sheer amount of ridiculous verbal diarrhea spraying out of Jaejoong's mouth.
