You've just brought home how impossible this whole situation is going to be. I'm really hoping that Stefan's ripper phase won't be resolved in a hot minute and so we'll have at *least* half a season to just watch Damon and Elena struggle with how close they feel to each other.

And yet the other shoe is going to be there. The closer they get, the more he loves her, the more she starts falling in love with him, the more it's going to hurt when the so called St. returns. Because no matter what she feels for Damon, Elena is going to feel obligated to Stefan. This is actually something that pisses me off quite a lot ( I think she felt obligated to him after that suicide attempt in S1) because while I understand it, I think it's a crappy reason to be with someone, even if you still care for them.

But.

In the end, like Daisy says, they are going to find their way to each other. They always do.

I actually thought it was a perfect way to end it, just because, as you say, the triangle IS unresolved. They are all fixed in their roles and can't really break free. Damon wants to leave and put the past behind him, but he can't because he doesn't want to leave either of them unprotected. Elena knows that it hurts him to see her with Stefan, but if she were to explore her feelings for Damon, she would hurt Stefan, whom she loves. And so they're all stuck in limbo, so to speak.

Interesting observation on the touching/subsequent action... I hadn't really thought about that, but you're absolutely right. It's like he's rebelling towards whatever it is she makes him feel, simply because it hurts too much to feel.

Heartbreaking and beautifully written, and really believable.
