The Party“I can’t believe you talked me into coming. You know I hate these things. It’s the same old thing every time; people drink too much alcohol, make an absolute dick of themselves, and then throw up everywhere. Boring!” Kristy Hill told her best friend Sandy Bennett.
It was her final year at high school, and so far Kristy had managed to stay clear away from these parties, opting instead to go to the movies, or watch a video at home on a Saturday night.
“Get off your high horse, Kristy. You know you came here because Rob is coming. In fact I think I can see him.”
“Where?”
“Through there,” Sandy said, pointing at a sliding glass door which led into the house. “For goodness sakes try and keep that goofy 'I’m in love with you smile' off your face, or you’ll scare him off.”
“Sorry. How do I look?”
Kristy stood completely still while her friend studied her. She had lost a lot of weight lately but she was still plump, carrying a little more weight than was needed around her hips, her thighs, her buttocks. Sandy had loaned her a tight fitting blue dress, and told her that it would be the best way to capture Rob’s attention. Kristy wasn’t sure it would make Rob see her the way she wanted him to, but Sandy had persisted, telling her she needed to start having a bit more confidence now that she’d lost weight.
“I really think I should have gone with the black,” Kristy told her friend. “More slimming.”
“But the blue matches your eye color perfectly. You look good, Kris.”
Kristy shot her friend a relieved smile.
“Now get in there and make your presence known.”
Kristy pulled her dress down tightly, before removing a lime flavored UDL from her bag.
“Wish me luck,” she said, flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder.
Kristy slid the back door of the two-story house open, in search of her man. The house was heated from the mass of bodies in it, a welcome change from the cool night air. It was October, but the nights were still chilly. Soon summer will be here, Kristy thought. If she stuck to the diet she was currently on, she’d be able to wear a bikini. Kristy flushed as she imagined Rob seeing her in a sexy blue two piece.
When she could see the top of his spiky brown hair, she felt her heart rate speed up. They’d been friends for just over two years now, and whilst they’d done a lot of flirting, he’d never seriously made a move on her. When Sandy had been talking about coming tonight, Kristy had simply shrugged it off as another piss-up, but when she’d heard that Rob was going to be attending she had thought it might be a good time to test out her new body image.
Now, attempting to navigate her way through the crowd of high school kids, she wasn’t so sure. Rob liked skinny girls, and yes she had lost weight lately, but had she lost enough for him to find her attractive? What if he shot her down in front of all these people? Everyone would laugh at her. She’d be the talk of the school. Kristy could just picture it, ‘she didn’t really think he’s go out with her!” She would never live it down.
Suddenly he was right there in front of her, talking to Rachel Clock and Beth Carter, a couple of girls who were also in her year. She’d never spoken to either of them before. They were from the cool crowd. She was not. Kristy was just debating whether this was really the best time to approach Rob, when his gaze landed on her. She shivered, despite the warmth created by the large crowd in the enclosed space.
As Rob studied her, she became aware of how much flesh she was actually showing. She looked down at her body. Her thighs were completely exposed, and her breasts were almost falling out of the top of her dress. It was too short, too revealing. Why had she allowed herself to be talked into wearing it? She didn’t look good; she just looked cheap. I look like someone I’d label a slut, thought Kristy.
Tearing her eyes away from the now sickening sight of her large body, she looked at Rob to see what his reaction would be. I really do look that bad, Kristy thought, as Rob remained motionless, just staring at her; his face and ears turning pink. A hot flush covered Kristy’s body, followed by the feeling of tears stinging her eyes. He was obviously embarrassed to look at her! Kristy started backing away, not wanting to completely break down here, in front of all these people.
At that moment, however, Rachel and Beth turned around and looked at her, suddenly realizing they no longer had Rob’s full attention.
“Oh, hi Kristy,” Beth giggled. “Haven’t seen you at a party before.”
“No, I don’t normally go to parties,” Kristy said, trying to hide her embarrassment.
“Nice dress,” Rachel added with a smirk.
“I bought it yesterday,” Kristy muttered, feeling so stupid. Why had she come? Rob would never talk to her again, she was sure. He would be upset that she had embarrassed him in front of two of the most popular girls in school.
“Was K-Mart having a sale?” Beth asked.
Rachel snickered. “Or was it Target?”
The two of them stood there smiling maliciously, reminding her of wolves ready to pounce on their prey. They’re going to eat me alive, Kristy thought. She hadn’t been thinking clearly when she’d agreed to come; when she’d agreed to wear this. Now she’d made a fool of herself in front of the one guy whose opinion mattered to her. How could she have thought she could compete with the Rachel Clocks and Beth Carters of the world? It was so unfair. She’d never be skinny like them. NEVER!
Before they could say anything else to her, Kristy muttered a quick “see you later”, and then walked away from what felt like the most humiliating experience of her life. Oh for them to see her like that! As she made her way back through the crowd, it felt like every person was laughing at her, making fun of her, whispering about her. When she opened the back door, and stepped back out into the cool night air, the tears she’d held back finally slid down her cheeks, ruining her carefully applied mascara.
Kristy took a seat at one of the empty tables in the backyard, and wondered what she should do now. She could walk out, and call a taxi. She could attempt to find Sandy and ask if they could leave now; except Sandy was probably off having a great time. She loved these things; she fitted in with these people. Or I can just sit here with my head down, and hope that no-one notices me, she thought. Kristy glanced up momentarily; there were people laughing and having a good time all around her. I hate parties, she thought bitterly. How come everyone else has a good time at these things, and I don’t?
“Kristy, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
Kristy’s heart stopped as she looked up and saw Rob standing over her. He pulled out the other seat at the table and sat on it. Kristy kept her head down. It was far too embarrassing to look at him. She didn’t want to know what he was thinking, or see what he thought of her.
“I saw the way Beth and that looked at you. They were real bitches. And I told them so. I said no-one treats my friends like that. My god, you should have seen their faces,” Rob laughed. “It was hilarious. They both just stomped away. Not even a good comeback line. For all their redeeming qualities, they’re not too smart. Not like you, Kristy.”
Kristy felt the beating of butterfly wings in her stomach. What was he saying exactly? She looked into his eyes and saw a warmth that heated her insides up.
“You know I was thinking,” Rob said, before stopping to take a deep breath. “I was thinking that maybe you and I could hang out sometime; you know, just the two of us. We could see a movie or whatever. Would that be cool with you?”
“Yeah,” Kristy said, smiling. “That sounds good, Rob.”
He looked relieved, and before she knew it, she was one more person laughing, and having a good time at the party.
