In your particular case, given length of quest and saga, agree 100%.
Regarding sterilization in general, though? I would like to see some sort of required pre-procedure counseling. Not because I think young women don't know their own minds, but because of the rather unsavory history of sterilization for eugenic reasons that this country has. I want such decisions to be made *absolutely uncoerced*, and I do fear that "walk in, be told this is forever, schedule procedure" may NOT be enough, and that the disasters of which the doctor spoke were the aftermaths of just such coercion.
I agree the pendulum has now swung too far the other way. But reproductive coercion is equally unacceptable in either direction.
It is, and I do not blame women who were not properly educated and given space to make up their minds. This doctor didn't even bother with the education part, just the dissuasion. If that's how they've been running things, no wonder they don't do tubals anymore. Heaven forfend we make an attempt to educate the patient.
It amazes me that girls as young as 14 can decide to HAVE babies, but women in their 20's are "too young" to make a decision about permanent sterilization.
I'm so sorry for what you're dealing with. I fought for years to be sterilized, and it finally took a life threatening condition in order to be sterilized.
Here's hoping you find someone willing to treat you, your body and your decisions with the respect you deserve. *hugs*
Flipping through the channel guide and seeing "16 and Pregnant" on MTV didn't improve my mood that afternoon, that's for sure. Why do we go out of our way to give teen parents publicity in this country? They can choose all they like; I don't see why our media has to encourage them, especially as it plays such a large role in the formation of adolescent identity.
So much for "the right place"! I am just so outraged right now. I mean really. It's a TUBAL. I can sort of understand doctors' reticence to entirely remove women's wombs when it isn't medically necessary (sort of), but a tubal doesn't remove anything/fuck with your hormones/whatever. Ugh. You'd think they would just do it and take the money.
If this doesn't work out, have you considered an Essure? The website is kind of dumb with the "when your family is complete, consider this!" on the front page, but I've heard that it's quite a nifty thing. I want one.

They're suppose to redirect you to someone that can perform it to if they're not willing. Sheesh. >.
