She's not totally oblivious to the subtext in the room -- how can there be subtext already, they've been in here a few moments and they're alone together -- and she's not sure what to do about it, yet. She decides to wait and see where St John is going with this, because...because she's not sure she wants to ask.

It seems like for him to be objective about this, they should perhaps discuss it on opposite sides of the room or something. But then, there's really no way to be objective here, he hasn't gotten out a 'Nica v. everyone else' flowchart or anything (thank god), he's just going by what he feels, and he feels very strongly that Nica should be tucked under his arm at this moment.

She hasn't analysed that. Maybe she should.
Anyway, she fits herself into his arms like she's decided that's where she belongs (maybe she has, and hasn't realised yet). "What's up?" she asks, quietly.
