ITP: webcomics that shouldn't be shitty but are

Nov 09, 2010 17:32

I don't know how well this would go over in smartsnark considering it seems a little grudgey, (it isn't, believe me, I just hate this comic on principle) but god dammit I have to snark the shit out of this thing. It's been bothering me. Sitting in its little corner of the web, mocking me with it's shiny but still obviously flawed artwork and ( Read more... )

i talk about shitty webcomics

(lol wow the same thing happened to me as with Kai)

Well, I don't think there's anything weird about prostitutes having a high-status in a fantasy world. It was kind of like that in Japan after all...geisha, anyone? I get the feeling the artist is trying to follow that kind of thing.

I didn't get every single thing you said about it, which really worries me and makes me lose confidence in my own abilities.

(also I cant draw sideprofiles for shit)

but man dem faces.

The only really good thing is the backgrounds... some of the colouring is nice but EVERYTHING IS SO SHINY FFF.
(also that one green-haired girls colour scheme was totally ripped of Gumi is it weird that this pisses me off most of all)

Geishas weren't prostitutes though...? But yeah that just seems dumb and contrived to me.

aw no that's just my fault for not knowing how to explain shit. :c

They weren't total prostitutes but they were often used for it, at no ill-effect to their standing. Particularly in 'olden times'. They were more like 'high-class' prostitutes, if that makes sense.

That was some highly enjoyable snarking, son. This page here is freaking hilarious, oh my god.

Man, I remember when I used to eat shit like this up. I think it was all the smackjeeves nonsense that I used to read. I've sorta gotten out of that though since I haven't done any actual worldbuilding in years. :U

But even I like consistency in my bullshit fantasy I mean come on.

smackjeeves is basically the ghetto of webcomics. There are so many terrible comics on there.

so.

many.

(I'm thinking of making these a regular thing haha. I like ranting about shitty webcomics)

I think my favorite part is the pasteded on-ness. It's just so jarring. Although I'm kind of worried--the plot and stuff are basically on the same level as your typical published yaoidesu shit except with colors and in English.

(also hi this is Alissa)

An update a week isn't that bad for a full colour, full page webcomic. (My only comparison is Dreamless and The Zombie Hunters, the former of which apparently got a lot of flak for something or rather? Oglaf and HINABN aren't being counted, as Oglaf is stylised and intermittent; HINABN is also stylised and also has an idiosyncratic update schedule. QC is outright disqualified because um... 4-koma? Fulltime artist? Still stylised, dammit.) Amusingly, I do know a webcomic that has a scarce 90 pages over 2 years. It's... fortunately? still running though. But yeah, colour and detail for a webcomic, CRAZY TALK. It's pretty but... why all that effort for a webcomic? Never mind the costumes are all over the place and just seem to be whatever is prettiest/hottest or that more detail equals a greater chance at getting things wrong ( ... )
