Full Canon Name: Maria Ushiromiya.
Canon: Umineko no Naku Koro ni.
Canon Justification: n/a.
Age: 9.
In-Game Name: n/a.
Gender: Female.
Role in tenthtwilight: Member of the Ushiromiya Family. Maria is Rosa's daughter.
Appearance: Bearing the one-winged emblem of the Ushiromiya Family on her right-chest, it is fairly obvious from Maria's clothes that she is a member of the notorious family located in Rokkenjima. However, her clothes are unique, if only for the fact that her Mother was the one who made them. Her dress consists of a black vest, and underneath that is a pink shirt. The bottom portion of the dress included a pink pattern to it. On her head is a crown, tied to her head with a red ribbon. Last but not least - she wears knee-high socks behind her red shoes. Again, Maria dresses uniquely. This is nothing less then fitting for her character, whose attitude is quite different from other children.
Her eyes are blue - which is sometimes described as 'blank'. There are many times where her emotions are unreadable. Maria also seems to take after her Mother in the fact that her hair is a brunet-color. Her hair reaches down a few inches passed her shoulders.
A noticeable item to note is the purse that Maria carries. The pink-colored accessory is always by her side without fail. The purse has a red-ribbon tied to it.
Maria's physical looks are ideal for her age. Short in stature, her face easily reflects what she is feeling. Maria's emotions are never quite hidden, even if at first glance, she seems to carry an indifferent-looking expression. It is quite obvious when she is expressing sadness, or fear - Maria is an emotional child, physically-wise.
Personality: At the young age of nine, Maria is extremely intelligent when it comes to the art of the occult. She has knowledge about seemingly complicated things such religious symbols involving witchcraft and what they mean. She has studied the art of witchcraft and knows about various demons. One could say that she becomes an almost-completely different person when it comes to discussing this topic. Changing from a seemingly innocent little girl to someone whom seems much more mature and older. It’s almost as if Maria has two personalities.
However, this could be justified by the fact that Maria has a strong desire to become the Witch that she admires and desires to be like (Beatrice). At one moment, she might be speaking in a childish manner, and laughing innocently, and the next, she might start speaking in a completely different way. Maria tends to almost be mocking to those who do not understand and do not wish to believe in the art of magic and the existence of witches as if such things are common sense.
Although, some describe her change of personality as ‘creepy’ and ‘unnatural’; this different personality is what Maria strives to be after Sakutarou ‘dies’. However, this goes hand-in-hand with her admiration for Beatrice. Maria becomes somewhat frustrated when others refuse to believe Beatrice’s existence, and sometimes even breaks down into tears when someone denies her beliefs.
At first glance, Maria looks indifferent to the world around her, and normally keeps to herself. Part of this is because of the rule her Mother made to not speak to strangers. Maria is indeed stubborn when it comes to following the rules her Mother creates. Whether it’s not taking her stuffed animal with her to go shopping with her, or staying in one place, Maria will do as told, unless swayed to do otherwise. Again, she is only nine. Although she does tend to follow these guidelines, there are times when she does indeed break the rules.
However, because of this indifference, others view her as strange. It is partly because of this that she is often made fun of at school (though, her being bullied is also due to her obsession with the occult, and the fact that she plays with stuffed animals, instead of speaking with other children).
She can indeed be selfless as well. Before Sakutarou was taken away from her, Maria would often allow herself to be bullied in the place of others - because she believed that as long as she did that, she could save others from the pain of being bullied in her place. Even when her Mother leaves for a week or so for ‘work’, Maria does her best to greet Rosa happily, and even offers to do things for her when she gets home, if only to make her Mother smile after such a long week.
Maria speaks differently than other children, often attaching the word ‘uu’ to her sentences when she has difficultly getting something across, if she’s upset about something, or even happy. Though she has been told time and time again that she’s not allowed to say such childish phrases, Maria has gotten into the habit of repeating the word over and over again. Maria believes that this phrase is a ‘happy spell’ - the word connected to a happy memory of her mother when she spent time with her in the past.
Maria holds the relationship she has with her Mother dearly. Of course, her Mother is one of the only actual human beings in her life that care for her. Despite the fact that Rosa has abused Maria time and time again, Maria has forgiven her quite easily, saying that she loves her Mother very much.
Instead of believing that these were the actions of her Mother, Maria denies that it was actually her. She says things like “Mama was possessed by the Bad Witch. Mama just had to come back.”
Though, she has a mischievous side of her personality as well. If given the chance, Maria will tease and make fun of others. This is only after she’s been given a chance to open up to said victim, however. This fact does not go with those she respects and admires.
Strengths/Abilities: Although she does not have any strength, physically wise, she makes up for this with her intelligence. Maria can make her point easy to understand when the situation deems fit for her. Again, this intelligence lies within the subject of witchcraft, and things that have to do with the occult in general.
Despite all the negatives in her life, she does her best to be happy, and strong. She’ll forgive her Mother, even though she breaks her promises to her in favor or work. She’ll forgive Rosa, even though she hits her again, and again. She finds happiness in simple things. For example, free food, or playing with stuffed animals. Even though she doesn’t have friends, she can find happiness in her friendship with these toys.
She tends to see the good in even the most negative situations. If her Mother cannot treat her to something as she promised for her birthday, Maria forgives her Mother, because they can spend time together. Even if Maria is left alone in the cold rain, Maria views it as fine, because she is doing as her Mother tells her.
Maria is strong, emotionally-wise in some aspects. She tends to be obedient, and does as her Mother tells her, no matter how unreasonable the situation seems to be.
Powers: Maria carries black blood inherited from Kinzo. Though, unlike Kinzo, she has a natural talent for magic. Although young, Maria is said to have potential enough to be even more powerful than the current Endless Witch. Though again, she is only nine, and is still only an apprentice.
However, these abilities that she carries are more of a maternal type of magic. Maria can give souls to intimate objects, such as stuffed animals. Though this magic seems weak, Maria can use this power to grant life to anything, as long as it is from the sea of 0.
With that said, she is protected by and in the same alliance as Beatrice, thus granting her even more powers. Her powers can even very well match those of a magician class. Though again, her powers are still frail. At the present moment, Maria can barely revive a rose without the help of her Teacher.
This isn’t to say that Maria can’t kill with her powers, either. She has studied enough black magic to bring harm to others.
Weaknesses: Maria is quite gullible. If someone tells her that something is unlucky, she will most likely believe in, and trust in the fact, unless specifically reassured otherwise. When told that others will revive after being killed for the sake of Beatrice’s ceremony, Maria believes that. After her Mother dies, Maria tends to seem indifferent, because she will meet her Mother again in the Golden Land.
She is prone to temper tantrums. When Maria is not given what she wants; she can throw a fit--stomping her feet, and crying until she is given her way. If refused further, then Maria will merely cry even more. Again, she is only nine. Even if she is emotionally-strong, she can still throw a fit, just as any child would.
There are many times when she has difficultly getting a point across. This has to do with the way she speaks. Maria is often not clear with her point, and this can often lead to misunderstandings, which can only frustrate the child further (and in the end, drive her to tears). She often says ‘uu’ when she has difficultly saying or explaining something, which can in turn, confuse others further.
Maria lacks in physical strength as well. While, she has magic to help aid her - Maria would not be able to defend herself if she were to do so without her powers. After all, she is only a nine year old.
History/AU History: Once upon a time, there was a little girl.
She had trouble making friends, she found herself frequently alone, her only parent left her to watch the house, and she was bullied often.
Yet, she was happy.
When Maria’s mother - Rosa - would leave her alone for nights on end for work, Maria would often cry and beg for her Mother to come back. At the young age of nine, Maria was forced to take look after herself. She would watch over the house, and even goes as far as leaving the house alone at night for the purpose of buying food. Some saw her as annoying (or, the neighbors would say such when she would cry loudly at night), others would see her as a pitiful child.
There was no Father. At least, not that Maria could remember. At such a young age, Maria was left alone in only her Mother's care.
Yet, Maria did what she could to maintain that happiness. She had an interest in the occult, and believed strongly that magic was real. At the time before she met Sakutarou, however, this magic was used for good.
”How could you give birth to make candy fall from the sky? How could you give birth to magic that would make tomorrow’s dinner crème croquette? How could you give birth to magic that would make the weather good when you go out tomorrow, and make your whole day fun?”
If there was one thing Maria believes so strongly in, it’s the existence of the legendary Golden Witch, Beatrice, and the magic that could supposedly do such awesome, fun things. Beatrice could do anything. Known as the Beatrice’s apprentice; she was praised frequently by this Witch, and began to learn how to use magic. However, this magic wasn’t anything harmful. There were spells such as ‘making candy fall from the sky’, or simply granting one self’s happiness. Maria recorded said magic in her Grimmiore.
Beatrice and Maria formed an alliance called Mariage Sorciere. This clause, and purpose of this alliance, is for Witches to join together and respect one another. To accept one another as Witches. In a way, it was to spread happiness in their own circle of fun magic.
Yes, Maria believed that she was creating her own magic through happiness. And through that magic, she could perhaps do the same for her Mother, who worked all the time. Maria’s desires were pure - wanting nothing more than to see her Mother every night; to be able to ease her stress she had from work.
But, there was a shift in that desire.
On one of Maria’s birthdays, Rosa had given her a stuffed lion that she had sewn herself. Maria didn’t have any friends outside of a few family members at the time - so, she made that lion her friend; naming it Sakutarou. Of course, Maria was overjoyed to receive such a gift from her Mother. It was created by her - for Maria.
Sakutarou quickly became Maria’s best friend. Speaking to it, and entrusting in its company. Maria wouldn’t cry, or get lonely when her Mother would work at night. If she felt lonely, Sakutarou would be there to cheer her up. Whether if were having a pajama party, or mixing candy with soda to experiment with what kind of taste it would have.
( Even though Maria knew quite well that Mama was secretly on vacation - even though her Mama was breaking that promises she made to spend time with Maria to be with other men, it was okay. )
One year, during one of the Family Meetings, Maria had snuck off to meet her ‘teacher’ - Beatrice - who praised Maria for being able to give a soul to non-living things as she had. Indeed, Sakutarou was special. He could speak and talk on his own, even though he was a mere stuffed animal. It was then that Sakutarou was given a body, and Maria granted her title as a witch. Lady MARIA would be later known as The Witch of Origins. A Witch that could give birth to souls from the Sea of Zero. A Witch that had the potential to be even more powerful then her own Teacher, even.
A chain of events was what changed Maria’s attitude almost completely. On a night that Maria was left alone, she had lost her key when she had gone out to purchase dinner with Sakutarou. A man who recognized her contacted the policeman, who took Maria into his custody. When they realized that Maria had been left alone without being able to contact her Mother easily, they called Child Services.
After speaking with Child Services briefly, Rosa lost control of her emotions. She reacted violently against Maria - calling her a ‘dumbass’, telling her that she didn’t have any friends because of how she spoke with stuffed animals.
It was on that night that Rosa smashes Maria’s toys - her precious friends. It was at that moment when Rosa took Sakutarou - was so, so precious to Maria - and tore him in front of her; killing her best friend, and breaking Maria’s heart, and perhaps her spirit.
”How could you give birth to magic that would cause the class bully to catch a cold? How could you give birth to magic that could seriously injure someone in class so they died? How could you give birth to magic that would cause a bus loaded with all the bullies to fall off a cliff?"
The once colorful pages in Maria's diary turned into black and white. Magic that was created for the purpose of happiness changed into dark spells to harm others. Maria's relationship with her Mom deteriorated - Maria holding a grudge against her Mother for destroying her best friend. She wanted revenge for what happened to Sakutarou. Maria would do what Mama did to him.
Her attitude shifted. Maria would often throw more temper tantrums than she used to, and there was a strong change in personality when Maria spoke about the occult.
But, that's fine, isn't it?
Everything will be okay once Beatrice is revived.
Reason for traveling to Rokkenjima: Maria is attending the Family Meeting with her Mother.
Can you and your character handle the graphic nature of this game? I have played the entirety of the Umineko games, and have enjoyed each and every gruesome moment of it. *cackle**cackle**cackle*-- Yes. I can handle anything you throw at me through this game, most likely.
As for Maria: she has studied the art of black magic, and has come to expect what might await her in Rokkenjima. So, it’s okay. Everyone will be resurrected in the Golden Land. Kihihihihi.
RP Sample: “…. Uu-. Mama…. Is dead?”
Maria had indeed had her suspicions that something had happened to cause the sudden silence between the family; although, she had not taken interest in such things at the time. The television had indeed taken a priority above anything else. After all, she wouldn’t want to miss her favorite show.
Maria was used to being left alone, regardless. It was fine if the others left her alone for a while. Although she had had fun spending times (read: teasing) Battler and the others, she had been distracted enough to do as she was told without holding the desire and curiosity to follow after.
Six people had died this morning.
She recalls the words that were promised regarding these deaths.
She slowly smiled, despite the heavy atmosphere around her, gazing at others with young eyes full of confidence.
“…. Maria doesn’t get it. Uu-” Her voice lowers to something almost inaudible. “… The culprit isn’t human. Everyone’s upset. Why?”
Her smile doesn’t fade, even though the atmosphere had grown heavier at her words. Despite the strange looks given to her at her question, her expression doesn’t change. Even Maria could take note of the strange looks around her easily. She frowns.
“………………………”
And slowly, she grins. It was almost as if she was mocking how the others reacted to such a situation.
“Kihihihihihihi.” The laugh is almost-devious sounding, and it shatters the silence almost too easily. “Kihihihihihihihihi. I don’t understand. Everyone’s upset. Why? Why? Even though the culprit isn’t human. Even though everyone will meet again in the Golden Land.”
Even though others had died, that was alright, wasn’t it? Maria knew that soon enough, Beatrice would revive. Maria would accept her invitation to the Golden Land, and everything would be okay. There was little need to worry about something as trivial as death. Not when such could be so easily reversed.
It was only a matter of a few more sacrifices, after all.
