UNDERSTANDING YOU
PG-13
[EXO-M] CHEN/LAY
FLUFF, ROMANCE, BIT OF ANGST
~2900W

i.

Chen continues to pretend he's Chinese illiterate since then. Lay believes him but Chen finds it harder to look at Lay in the eyes because he is not Chinese illiterate although yes his Chinese is still imperfect but he understands most of what Lay says to him in Chinese and most of what Lay says to him in Chinese is what Lay tries to keep a secret from him.

Once, Lay comes up to him and mutter something along the lines of 'you smell really nice today.'

At times, Lay stares at him while he is studying Chinese and he says something close to 'you look really cute when you're serious'

Another time, Lay listens to him singing and Chen catches him saying 'you always take my breath away, Zhong Da'

And one time, Chen is about to drift to sleep when Lay whispers to his ear and Chen understands him clearly 'sweet dreams. I love you'

Chen wonders how long he can keep it up like this.

ii.

It is EXO's second showcase and Chen's first time in China and Chen thinks his heart might just burst out of his chest, if such thing was only possible. All twelve members join hands and Suho says a few encouraging words and they all go 'we are one!' before lining up to go up stage. Chen manages to survive through, thankfully, his hands not shaking as fervent as he thought, his steps perfectly aligned with the others, his voice (his powerful, beautiful voice) hitting all the right notes without mistakes.

Time for the interview comes, and Chen is glad he can at least use the time to catch his breath, but not for long, apparently. The MC asks about their dorm and their lives in it and Lay answers for him because they're in China and says something as he points to Chen that makes the fans squeal and Luhan giggle and Xiumin smiling uncomfortably and everyone else is just standing there awkwardly because they don't understand a thing. Confused (because honestly despite his Chinese getting better, his ears caught nothing more than the deafening screams and vaguely heard short Chinese words like 'you', 'I', 'yes', 'no', and yes his Chinese still sucks in situations like these), Chen nudges his fellow Korean-stuck-in-China bandmate who shakes his head and claims he didn't quite catch what Lay said, it's too noisy, the fans' screams are too loud while Luhan passes the message to Suho who smiles not-so-brightly-like-he-usually-does at him before the K vocalist swiftly tugs on Chen's arm to whisper in his ear.

"Lay said you two sleep together."

Chen's heart stops.

He isn't sure whether or not should he trust Suho's words from Luhan's words and immediately he wishes he can speak (and understand) not only Korean, but also Chinese as fluent as Luhan can.

He wants to trust Luhan's translations, but he can't. Not when he isn't hearing the words directly from Lay. Not when Lay isn't letting Chen understand him better with all his Chinese talk that Chen needs a couple of minutes to properly comprehend. Not when Lay isn't allowing Chen to know all these sentences that only Chinese people would get but they are all (supposedly?) directed at (for) Chen.

Chen ditches his Chinese lessons and abandons Xiumin to rot with the tutor for the rest of the week.

iii.

They, as in M members, move to China and move to a new dorm and after an odd farewell party with the K members that Chen can only vaguely remembers (He should have seen it coming when Kai comes to him all smiles and all while offering him 'harmless coke'), they are now set to stay in the new but not as cozy as the one in Korea dorm with freer and more space and rooms for the members. The manager only tells them there are three rooms for you guys, two in each room, so just drag whoever you want and get your things unpacked and then leaves to let them wander around and rest while he's out taking care of things for their future activities. Luhan dumps his bags in the living room and jumps on the couch to watch some TV while Xiumin decides to check out the rooms before not long shouting in Chinese 'Me dibs on this room!' and unpacks first. Tao is too tired to do anything so he joins Luhan (or, more specifically, sprawls on Luhan) on the couch while Kris shuffles to the nearest room possible and sets his luggage there. Chen stands in the doorway awkwardly, unsure of what to do when he catches Lay glancing at him from the corner of his eye and the elder takes a step towards him but Chen acts like he didn't notice and just trudges away and enters the room Kris is in as he mutters in broken Chinese of 'Gege, I'll just room with you'.

Chen pretends he didn't see Lay frown.

(Or hear Lay mumbling '...so you regret being roommates with me?')

iv.

Lay stops trying, Chen notices. Or at least he seems to, in Chen's opinion. Chen always distances himself from Lay, while Lay makes (tries to make) that distance nonexistent. Made, to be precise, because it is all that happened before. Chen thinks it's better this way, because they don't need to pretend anymore, he doesn't have to pretend that he is completely oblivious and Lay doesn't have to pretend that he is completely obvious, Chen doesn't have to pretend and he can return to being the happy-go-lucky Jongdae with a warm smile and Lay doesn’t have to pretend and he can return to being the unreadable Yixing whose true feelings (and mindset) are unknown. It's better this way, because they are back to being bandmates, being the typical hyung-dongsaeng, gege-didi, dancer-singer, Chinese-Korean, Zhang Yixing-Kim Jongdae, Lay-Chen. That is all they were ever are.

That is all they will ever be, Chen tells himself.

That is all they will ever be, he repeats until his jaw muscles goes sore.

v.

Chen stares blankly at the book in front of him, the scribbles are familiar and he is certain he had it memorized once but damnit why can't he remember. He must have been looking at the page dumbly because Luhan giggles as he takes a seat next to him.

"Need help, Jongdae-ah?" Luhan asks in that perfect Korean of his, and Chen loves how the elder is the only one who still calls him by his real name. He shakes his head though, because he knows he is capable of answering the questions on his book just--perhaps not as agile as he is expected to.

Luhan raises an eyebrow. "You sure?" He asks again, clarifies, because he is honestly worried about Chen, the younger boy seems to have many difficulties lately.

Chen shakes his head again in response. "I just need time to think." He answers. Luhan nods understandingly.

"Just know I'll always be available if you need someone to talk to, kay?" The elder says, patting him on the shoulder before disappearing into his room.

It takes a while for Chen to realize that Luhan wasn't talking about the question in his book.

vi.

Lay is talking with Kris one day, and Chen notices that they aren't just talking. He notices that they are conversing intimately, about something serious, about something funny, about something that makes them both look deep into thought at first but then smiling at the next second. The two are sitting by the corner of the waiting room together and Lay holds his phone for Kris to see, but Kris can't see it properly so he holds the phone and brings it closer to his view. Their fingers brush each other's and their breaths mix as their skin makes contact and Chen feels his chest tightens, his blood boils, his fist clenches, and the next thing Chen remembers is that he is in the male's restroom, his knuckles bleeding from shards of glass and the mirror in front of him is broken into pieces. He hears Xiumin's voice yelling for him and he meets the other's worried gaze a few seconds later, Tao's yelp of fear follows as his hand begins to numb.

vii.

The manager scolds him and cancels their schedule for the rest of the day. He refuses to bring Chen to the hospital and only lets the company's medics tend him because it isn't exactly serious but it is quite painful to take the tiny shards out. Kris accompanies the manager to apologize to the broadcasting representatives for bailing and Chen gets another round of scolding from Luhan who calls him an idiot, what the hell were you thinking?! While Tao still refuses to be around him because blood is too traumatizing to him and Xiumin wants to back Luhan up because he is right but he can't bear to do it when he looks at Chen's blank stare so he calms Luhan down and gives comforting pats to Tao.

Lay watches from afar.

viii.

The manager tells them to rest immediately and says that they are lucky to have a schedule of practices and not recordings tomorrow or else, he glares at Chen who looks away in guilt. They are all sent to their rooms but as soon as their manager leaves, Kris tells them that no one is going anywhere and things has to be cleared out now.

"Jongdae." He calls Chen's real name because this is serious, very serious. "Explain, please?"

Chen looks up and glances at every single person in the room but his mouth goes dry as his gaze last lands at Lay.

Lay stares vacantly back.

Kris sighs and Luhan shakes his head at them, Xiumin swallows nervously sensing the tension and Tao doesn't quite understand.

"Sort it out." Kris' words echoes in the room as the other four make their way to their own respective rooms--no, just to one room actually, because Luhan wants to accompany Tao who still seems traumatized and Kris feels the need to watch over the youngest because he's the leader, while Xiumin has to go to the same room because, well, it is his room after all.

Lay only stares at Chen and Chen stares back, but they both convey different emotions with their eyes. Chen shows hurt, betrayal, enormous pain while Lay gives him a stoic, cold, perfectly masked blank gaze. Chen stares and he thinks it's enough. He might not have full grasp of Lay's native language or thorough understanding of Lay in that matter, but it's enough.

He ignores that stinging pain from his hand as he crashes his and Lay's lips together, his injured hand pushing the other's head forward to deepen the kiss, his fingers entangling in between Lay's soft strands. Lay closes his eyes and wraps his arms around Chen, savors that sweet taste of the younger boy's. He lets out a sigh of relief because finally, Chen understands. Not perfectly, but he understands.

The barriers crack. It's a pretty small hole that was made, but it's a start.

ix.

They are both out of breath when Chen pushes Lay on to the bed, the younger towers over the latter and they lock gazes. Lay's chest is still heaving up and down irregularly, and Chen feels blood rushing to his cheeks for the first time after he initiated the kiss. He falls onto Lay, dropping his weight upon the other boy's chest, his head resting on the crook of the elder's neck and Lay feels shivers coming down his spine when Chen's warm breath ghosts over his skin and Chen's hair prickles and just by the mere fact of Chen being so close to him and finally, within his embrace.

Chen rolls over to his side later and Lay watches him raise his injured hand to caress Lay's cheeks. Chen presses his lips tightly, and exhales.

"Are we really…?" He asks, uncertain, but the uncertainty is washed straight away when Lay smiles and joins their fingers together.

"Yes." Lay answers, in Korean, in Chinese, it doesn't really matter to Chen because he already understands, not perfectly, not yet, but he's getting there. "Yes, we are."

They share one last kiss before drifting to sleep within each other's embrace.

x.

Luhan's obnoxiously wide smile greets them the first thing in the morning. Lay seems only half awake as he zones out and doesn't protest when Chen drags him to the main room where Xiumin is already enjoying a bowl of chocopuffs.

"Mornin'." Xiumin greets, waves even, dumping the spoonful of cereal into his mouth. Lay greets back but Chen doesn't.

"Where's Yifan gege and Zitao?" Chen questions, and--forget about their stage names, he misses using their real names anyway.

Minseok shrugs. "Still in my room when I last checked. Asleep." He answers, munching down the chocolate cereal. A giggly Luhan joins them afterwards.

"So… Did anything happen?" Luhan is teasing them, obviously, and Jongdae wants to say nothing much really but Yixing answers for him when the elder pulls his chin and plants a kiss on Jongdae's lips. Luhan squeals but Minseok coughs out his cereal.

"Guys, I'm eating here." Minseok says but he is smiling because he's happy, really, for his two friends.

Luhan's excited squeals is what woke Zitao and (amazingly) Yifan up.

(x.v

Jongdae's fingers curl tightly around the handful of Yixing's hair, his teeth gnawing mercilessly on his lips, trying so hard and so badly to stifle everything possibly loud coming out of his mouth. They are taking their relationship to the next level, people may say, when commitment and sincerity and genuineness is no longer questioned and there is not even a slightest hint of hesitation. Either that or desire and lust are simply too uncontainable and are in need of unleashing.

Jongdae feels his breath hitch by every second, his eyes glazed as he watches Yixing on his knees, doing wondrous things to him with that wondrous mouth of his. His head bumps the wall as he tilts it back, beads of sweat forming and trickling down his skin as his grip tightens, every small action triggering that twists of knots in the pit of his stomach. He feels Yixing swirls his tongue around that bundle of his sensitive skin and Jongdae rolls his eyes, his legs trembling and damnit since when is it so hard to get oxygen into your lungs. Yixing hums and bobs his head up and down and allows his fingers to play along then he glances upwards and sees Jongdae helplessly trying to restrain himself from screaming, helplessly trying to restrain himself from collapsing, and helplessly trying to restrain himself from begging to Yixing, begging for more, more, and more. Yixing chuckles and Jongdae growls but then Yixing pulls away, licking his lips as he stands up on his feet. He is greeted with a mixture of a needy and horrified and baffled and panicked looking Jongdae and he laughs a little, linking his hands with the other's then guiding Jongdae's fingers to travel to very sensitive parts of skin on his backside. Yixing whimpers and he grips onto Jongdae's bare back as he whispers into Jongdae's ear in Korean alluringly with that thick Chinese accent (that does not make it sound a hell lot sexier, in Jongdae's opinion).

"Shall we?"

Jongdae will be stupid if he says no.)

xi.

It takes a frantic Baekhyun who overly panics when he accidentally catches Jongdae and Yixing together (doing nothing inappropriate, mind you) for the K members to find out.

Joonmyun and Kyungsoo stares at their main vocalist weirdly and Chanyeol has to literally kick some senses into Baekhyun for the singer to finally stop flailing and yelling. Not for long though.

"Chen and Lay! CHEN AND LAY!!!" Baekhyun flails again and Chanyeol kicks him again and Baekhyun slaps him in return and Joonmyun sighs, and silently wonders why the hell was he in this band again.

Sehun and Jongin exchange knowing glances.

xii.

They sit around in a circle, both M and K members, and Joonmyun has this serious look on his face and he looks like he is seriously judging the confused Jongdae and Yixing.

Minseok stifles his laughs and Luhan attempts to look serious too while Yifan smiles knowingly and Zitao is trying to understand the Korean words being said.

Joonmyun begins. "So we've heard…"

"YOU TWO ARE DOING EACH OTHER!!"

Joonmyun mentally selfpalms and for once he is thankful that Chanyeol strangles Baekhyun. Luhan's serious façade breaks and he bursts out laughing, Minseok following after.

Jongdae flushes bright red and Yixing blushes at the accusation, but none denies. Jongin notices this.

"For real?" The second youngest inquires, curious. Yixing and Jongdae exchange glances, but Jongdae looks away and coughs while Yixing nods timidly. Joonmyun gasps. Baekhyun and Chanyeol stares at them in bewilderment.

Sehun has a victorious smile on his face and Jongin grumbles as he takes out a few sheets of won and hands them to the maknae.

Kyungsoo just stares with his wide eyes and his typical 'what the fuck' face.

xiii.

"So you're together?"

"Yes."

"Like, together together?"

"Yes."

"Like, you guys are in a relationship together?"

"Yes, we are."

"Like, you two kiss and have sex together?"

"……….."

Chanyeol comes to smack Baekhyun again.
