Summary: Happy Birthday Shishido! Shishido celebrates his birthday at the ice cream shop with Ohtori and a serious matter comes up.
(Part 1 of 2)

Ohtori’s boss was surprised when the boy came walking back in the parlor, still on break, with a brilliant smile on his face. Unbeknownst to him though, the junior had just come from the internet café across the street, having convinced his friend Shishido Ryou to come down. On Shishido’s birthday, no less. But the store manager only quirked an eyebrow when Ohtori put cash in the register and proceeded to make a quite large sundae, cherry on top and all - though the cherry was also accompanied by a candle. He didn’t refuse the boy either when he asked if he could extend his break. Kids these days.

Rubbing the back of his head with a sigh, Shishido walked down the street toward the Ice Cream shop, trying hard to keep the scowl from his face. He still wasn’t exactly sure why he said he'd come to the ice cream place, especially when he was in such a bad mood. It always happened. His birthday rolled around and it was a bad day. Classes had sucked, mostly because he kept making mistakes and it seemed like every teacher had something against him. And of course he missed lunch because he had been working on a stupid essay that he didn’t even end up turning in because, gee, he wrote it on the wrong topic. It was just a crappy day. And while he really, really wanted to see Ohtori (just because the kid was so nice and such, that’s all), he didn’t really want to end up snapping or hurting his feelings. It wasn’t Ohtori's fault he was having such a day.

Ears swiveled backwards, Shishido pushed open the door to the parlor and glanced around.

Ohtori’s ears perked up at the sound of someone entering the store, a wide smile conquering his face when he spotted the senior. “Shishido-san!” He gave a small wave from the booth he was sitting at - accompanied by the giant bowl of ice cream - and from the looks of it, very glad he‘d convinced Shishido to come. “Happy birthday. I made you a sundae, as promised.”

Shishido blinked, surprised to see Ohtori in a booth instead of behind the counter. And he was even more surprised to see the gigantic sundae--he hadn’t really believed Ohtori would make it. Sauntering over, he flopped down in the booth, blinking at Ohtori for a moment. Odd how he was already feeling better. "Uhm.. thanks? You really didn’t have to do this.."

That again, though Ohtori didn’t seem to mind running around in circles. He was still smiling, ears in attention. "It’s not a problem, Shishido-san - it’s the least I could do." And he pushed the sundae toward the senior. Somewhere between making it and sitting down, he had lit the candle on top, its wax barely beginning to melt. Ohtori was a firm believer in the importance of birthdays and wanted to cheer Shishido up if anything. "Now make a wish."

Shishido eyed the sundae with a raised eyebrow. He hadn’t had a candle lit for his birthday in a loong time. "What, do I look six?" he grumbled, giving Ohtori a brief grin to assure him he wasnt being serious. Sighing, he leaned forward a little and blew out the candle. To himself, he thought I wish I find my sacrifice, feeling like a sap and a three year old at the same time. Pulling the candle out, Shishido handed Ohtori a spoon and took one for himself. "I wished that you would tell me why you're working so much." He stared at Ohtori flatly, giving him a no-nonsense look. He was going to get to the bottom of this.

Ohtori found himself watching the senior closely as he blew out the candle. He couldn’t explain it, be he felt mesmerized in a sense, like bathing in the calm feeling of the other’s presence. Ohtori had felt it before - back when they were in the park - and it made everything feel okay. Yet Shishido had the tendency of startling him, even back then, with certain topics, and almost dropped his spoon. “That is…” Ohtori’s ears drooped, giving him a sullen expression. The senior looked so serious, so he couldn’t avoid or deny his words - or even lift his eyes up from the tabletop. Yet he managed to cover it with a polite smile, poking at the whipped cream with his spoon. “I told you not to worry about that, Shishido-san.”

"Yeah, and you could tell me a lot of things." Shishido shoved a spoon full of ice cream in his mouth and leaned back a bit. "I'm as stubborn as you." Which was kind of true, but Shishido was not too certain how stubborn he could be if Ohtori started smiling that Big Glowy smile or if he looked like he was going to cry or something. Shishido really, really hoped Ohtori would never look like he was going to cry. "Now I'm..."--he wasn’t about to admit to being worried--"..involved, so you better just tell me and then things will work out."

“Things won’t magically work out like that,” Ohtori countered dimly. Shishido was right, he was stubborn - that and confused over how he’d changed from being so jovial a moment ago. He glanced back up at him, the confusion warping into an inner turmoil. Ohtori had never admitted the reasons behind his part-time jobs before - to anyone - yet he was caught up in the possibility of telling Shishido. That just felt safe. “It’s…” Ohtori looked away. “kind of complicated…”

It was really grating Shishido deep in his chest to see Ohtori so... well, depressed. It make him antsy and tense, his ears flat against his head and his tail swishing with irritation. If Ohtori would just tell him then they could work from there, but he was being stubborn and damned it Shishido was about to give up. But he hated just sitting there, talking calmly. If it was this bad, then there was no time to lose. "I'm sure it is, that’s why you've got to tell me! Ohtori... Nothing's going to change if you don’t do something about it."

“I am doing something about it!” Though the junior’s mouth snapped shut, eyes wide, when he realized he’d raised his voice. Ohtori ducked his head again, carefully whispering now. His grip on the spoon was making his knuckles turn white. “Working is doing something about it… It’s keeping me out of the house more.” Ohtori’s shoulders sagged in a defeated posture, ears and tail having gone limp. “Sorry I’m so sad on your birthday, Shishido-san.”

Ohtori's open defiance somehow perked Shishido's hope for the kid, but then those sad shoulders returned and Shishido sighed deeply, running his hands through his hair. He didn’t know how to deal with this--he couldn’t just keep yelling at the junior, that certainly would make him feel worse. But it really, really killed him to see Ohtori like this (why it mattered so much, he didn’t know, but it did.) and he wasn’t going to let it keep going on. "Well if you really feel bad about it then stop being so sad.." His hands twitched, feeling useless, pressed flat against the table. "Why don’t you like being home..? Did.. something happen?"

It wasn’t like Ohtori could help feeling miserable. He’d been avoiding the subject for a while, so to suddenly be given concerns and suspicions over it was new. To say he felt cornered by it wouldn‘t be far from the truth either, though where he was: lips parting with an explanation in tow. “I…” Ohtori’s breath caught on the word, ears flattening even more. He was rapidly becoming worried about what his answer could do. He wondered if he could even explain it right, or if it would just sound silly. He wondered if explaining it would do anything at all.

Ohtori didn’t speak again until the spoon interrupted his wave of concerns. His grip had finally loosened around it, so it dropped, clattering on the tabletop and startling him. That’s when he realized he’d been thinking too much-- and that it really was silly. Touching his cross, he looked straight at Shishido. “My parents don’t really accept me anymore. It’s nothing more than that.” The word “disgrace” also came to mind, screamed in his mother’s voice.

Shishido watched Ohtori silently, not sure if he should stay concerned or not. Anyone not accepted by their parents certainly would have a damned hard time staying at home. But it was worse because it was Ohtori and that just mattered much more to him than he had expected. He growled slightly at the thought--Ohtori probably was still polite, shy as ever in a place where he should have felt most comfortable. A stranger in his own home.

He felt a ripple of something sharp and fast like icy wind across his shoulders and he quickly forced himself to relax. It wouldn’t be good if he started blowing up the ice cream parlor. But the fact that he could very well lose control any minute over this whole ordeal worried him. He had never had such a temper before. What had changed? "What about getting an apartment?"

“I‘m saving up for that,” Ohtori answered - as if it suddenly became the easiest thing to say. It was true, he was saving his paychecks to move out - among other things. Leaving wasn’t part of the issue since he didn’t exist in his parent’s lives anymore: waking up long before them and sneaking back in far after they fell asleep. Home-cooked meals didn’t exist either. Ohtori had a year worth of reminders about how they felt about him, though no matter how much they learned to despise him, a part of him still loved them. Watching them destroy everything he cared about just had to be a minor detail. Had to.

Ohtori was still touching his cross, risking a thought toward how Shishido now fit into all of it - what was going on in his own mind. Ohtori had been vague, leaving out crippling details: raised voices, fists, being pushed down stairs. Even when he was covered in bandages and bruised last year, no one else ever noticed. Now to get concerns when Ohtori was ‘handling’ the situation well was almost too much.

Something still wasn’t right. It just wasn’t okay to let the issue lie there. Sure, Ohtori could handle his own life and he certainly wasn’t a weakling (even though he had certainly looked a little battered and worn down), but Shishido didn’t want to just turn away. He couldn’t just let it drop there.

"Well... I mean. I know you're doing what you can but.. It's not cool to be.. hurting yourself, okay? I mean.." Shit, this was harder than he had thought. "You gotta sleep and school is important and shit, Ohtori, I'll lend you money no problem." He'd have to find a job himself, but some how, it would be worth it.

The fact he could be hurting himself never crossed Ohtori’s mind before. Ever. So he was a little taken aback, blinking slowly. Ohtori did get in a few hours of sleep every night, so it wasn‘t like he was collapsing from exhaustion too frequently - though he now supposed it was frequent enough. That and his dropping grades could still be corrected, so he wasn‘t really hurting himself, was he? If anything, Shishido’s offer to lend money inspired him to say otherwise. “I-I couldn’t let you do that, Shishido-san!” He’d feel guilty to accept something like that - if he’d even take it in the first place. “I assure you, I’m alright.” Ohtori managed a small smile. “I’ve gotten this far.”

"Just because you made it this far alone doesnt mean you have to keep going on like that..." Shishido scratched his ear, fiddling with his spoon a little as he looked away, embarrassed. He didn’t really have any idea what he was getting himself into. But... "Well, it's my birthday, so I'll do whatever the heck I feel like." He reached out and grabbed another spoonful of the melting ice cream, giving Ohtori a smile. It'd work out, some how. Even if Shishido had to drag the taller boy kicking and screaming from his house.

Ohtori didn’t know what Shishido meant by that, but whatever it was, it sounded definite, so he left it alone. The topic was slipping away anyways. It relieved the junior but made him wonder if it would change anything again, and upon failing to coming up with an immediate conclusion, that thought was simply pushed aside too. He was thinking far too much lately.

Finally, Ohtori answered his companion’s smile with a true one of his own. He then retrieved his spoon from the tabletop, proceeding to steal a scoop from the sundae. He didn’t notice when he started to hum ‘happy birthday’ - his spirits seeming to be reviving now.

"Don’t you dare start singing that.." Shishido gave Ohtori an almost-serious stern glance, chomping down on another spoonful like a warning. No birthday songs, none of that nonsense. He had let the junior get away with the sundae and candle, but Shishido Ryou drew the line somewhere. But he was glad that Ohtori seemed to feel better, even though he didn’t feel like the topic had really been dealt with. But maybe he'd leave that for another day. Now he was content on ice cream and good company. "This is pretty good."

Ohtori chuckled and stopped humming, his grin widening considerably. “Okay, Shishido-san.” And he was about to reiterate another ‘happy birthday’ aloud, but busied himself with licking the remaining whipped cream off his spoon. Since the heavy topic was lifted, it looked as if the both of them could really enjoy themselves, and Ohtori liked that chance. “I’m glad,” he responded with another warm smile to the compliment. It felt like a direct appreciation toward him, since the sundae was all Ohtori could do for Shishido on such short notice - but maybe he was being selfish for thinking that.

"Yeah, well.." Shishido hunched his shoulders a little embarrassedly, those typical warm Ohtori smiles gettign to him some how. It was just ice cream, right? The junior didn’t have to look so happy that he was enjoying it. Who wouldnt enjoy ice cream? Shishido tapped his foot a little under the table, blinking at the ice cream on the table before looking around for a clock in the parlor. After a moment, he glanced at Ohtori, ears turned warily. "You wanna get out of here?"

“Hm?” Ohtori blinked, not sure if he’d heard him right, but after a moment, he was convinced that Shishido couldn’t of asked anything else. That concept made him feel incredibly happy for some reason, a slight blush painting his cheeks as he beamed. “Sure, Shishido-san!” He could probably get off work for the rest of the day anyways, and it wasn’t like he could - or wanted to - say no to the senior’s company.

"Yeah.. okay.." Shishido breathed slightly, relaxing a bit and running a hand through his hair. He felt like he had won something, but he wasn’t exactly sure what. Grinning maybe a little too broadly, he stood up, ears perked. "Uhm, don’t know where you wanna go but yeah.." He had no idea what to do now. But hell, he'd figure it out, right? And the fact that Ohtori was--maybe?--blushing kind of made Shishido's brain go a little stupid, so he wasn’t too worried about a plan. They'd wing it, no problem.

Ohtori - still grinning like his life was suddenly perfect - followed, getting to his feet and making sure he grabbed his bag. Last time, he’d forgotten it in the parlor, which had resulted in more than a little stress on his own end. “Anywhere is fine,” he stated sincerely, cheerfully. Ohtori was actually quite ready to walk out of the store and go anywhere with the senior, no more thought spared to his boss who would notice and scold him about it later. “It’s a very nice day out, so we can walk.”

"Yeah, good idea. Like, go to the park or something..."
