Summary: Oishi finally sparks Eiji's enthusiasm about Biology, but the high-spirits don't last too long.
It had been a while, so Oishi was more or less discouraged when his gaze sought out the back of the room. It was true he hadn’t been doing this lately, especially during his lectures, so it was very possible he wasn’t noticing it, though there was the possibility he’d been blatantly ignoring the mass of red hair resting on the desk. All the other students sat in attention, scribbling down words in their notebooks, but this one still failed to do so. And it wasn’t so much the boredom inflicted on the subject that discouraged him. It seemed personal now, and Oishi would admit that he felt hurt.
Yet he finished the rest of the lecture, not concerning himself over it too much-- at the moment, at least. It really wasn’t until he was assigning lab partners that he took the odd number of students into account and decided to approach it one last time. So with pairs busily getting microscopes and setting off to their tasks, Oishi went over to Kikumaru’s desk, waking him for what seemed the millionth time.
Eiji’s record of staying awake in biology class had finally ended. His tedious work of staying awake for an the entirety of two weeks had failed. The redhead had honestly tried to stay awake this time, however the toll of late night exploring had finally reached his weary body and he had collapsed as soon as he sat down in the chair, snoozing peacefully, not even bothering to put up the book to hide himself and by the time Oishi had settled in on his lecture, he was safely on his way to dreamland.
He was in the middle of a rather promising dream, with his imaginary fighter giving him a soothing massage. Eiji purred, curling closer to his fighter’s well toned body, and wrapped his arms around the other man, tail uncurling in pleasure as he felt strong fingers knead their way down his back. “Mmmm” Eiji moaned slightly as the hands slowly made their way back up, clutching Eiji’s cheeks, tilting his head upward to bring their lips together. And Eiji opened his eyes- to find himself staring into the eyes of one Oishi Syuuchirou.
The quite wide eyes of Oishi Syuuchirou, mind you. He hadn’t expected Kikumaru to turn his head in his sleep, when he was already leaning over to wake him, their lips accidentally brushing. It was a shock, and all the more embarrassing, though Oishi wasn’t one to completely lose his composure in the classroom. He just quietly drew away, standing at his full height again, blinking as he fought for the proper response and to ward off the flushing of his cheeks. Though it was just an accident, so there’s be no hard feeling, right? Oishi hoped that much, especially with Kikumaru. Luckily, none of the other students seemed to have noticed.
“Ah… sorry…” he stammered, wondering about what feelings were actually flying through his mind beyond his stunned state-- beyond his increasing worry, that is --and why his Fighter-sense was wide awake and stirring. Swallowing, he surveyed the student. Maybe… Kikumaru hadn‘t noticed? Now there’s a thought. “Welcome back to biology, Kikumaru-kun. I take it you had a nice nap?”
Blinking sleepily, Eiji looked about him in confusion. “Nya?” Kikumaru pouted, disappointed at the lack of warmth and it was such a good dream too. Reaching up, he touched his lips gingerly, flushing a light pink. The kiss had felt so real, it had sent a tingling sensation through his body. The moments that those soft lips touched his own, he knew that it was his fighter. Eiji wrapped his arms around himself happily. “Hoi! Very nice!” He replied, oblivious to his surroundings, still lost in the haze of pleasure surrounding his dream.
“Ah, that’s good…” Oishi was quite aware that he was hovering around Kikumaru, trying to read him. Nothing seemed different in his composure, which allowed him momentary relief. Kikumaru hadn’t noticed, and at once, Oishi was warning off his own hesitance, his thoughts returning to the classroom. “But the rest of your classmates have started a lab. Care to join them?” Yet as soon as the words were out of his mouth, he felt guilty. Sure, it was one, little accident, but the student had the right to know… So much for not stressing over it.
Eiji’s surroundings came crashing down around him. “Lab?” He turned around, glancing at all the working pairs. “Oh no! We had a lab today, didn’t we?” he looked around frantically, searching for any lone individual that needed a partner. No luck today. Sighing dejectedly, he muttered, “I’ll stay after class. ‘m sorry Oishi sensei.” It had become a sort of routine, that he had been slowly trying to break out of.
He paused momentarily, “Do you think that I could make it up after class, Oishi sensei?”
Still mentally flailing at a million worrisome thoughts, Oishi took a moment too long to answer. He gave a small start as he found himself staring, the fading blush finding a reason to spark up again. “Uh… Hm… that sounds like a good idea, but I have an alternative.” Oishi pulled the thin reading glasses from his face, depositing them into his breast pocket. With his mind starting to churn back to the lab as well, he was finding it easier to smile. A gentle grin that reassured himself more. “Your classmates just started, so why don’t I be your lab partner?”
Grinning wide in response, Eiji grasped Oishi's hand enthusiastically, shaking the life out of Oishi's arm. "You'd do that for me, Oishi sensei? Wahoi! Maybe I won't fail Biology!" He flipped out of his chair, letting go of Oishi's warm hand, humming a pleasant tune, the recent events fogging his mind with the haze of happiness. He had a feeling that today was going to be a wonderful day, no doubt about it. Not only did he wake from one of the best dreams he'd had in a long time, Oishi sensei had completely understood Eiji's position and had offered to help him through the lab. The redhead nodded happily, gathering supplies to bring back to his desk, it was one of those rare days when everything was happy, love and squishy like marshmallows.
Carrying a bundle full of fragile glass objects, he dumped them haphazardly onto his desk, quickly setting up beakers, test tubes, and assorted containers. His worked quickly, eager to finish the lab during the remainder of the class period so that he wouldn't have to stay after. Perhaps, he could continue his record of staving off detentions after all. Though there was something a little odd about the way that Oishi sensei kept uncomfortably looking at him.
Allowing a chuckle, Oishi was put at ease by the student’s enthusiasm. It always happened like that, though now that he was back to a more professional mindset, he couldn’t dwell on the reasoning behind it too much-- even with the redhead holding his hand for a moment. At ease indeed. He still always managed to turn his world upside-down.
“Of course I will. I’m always here to help.” The second statement was spoken softly. Oishi had said something like it before, but there was never harm in repeating himself. Even when there was no guarantee-- no matter what left his mouth --that he’d be listened to. Truly, he was there for all of his students, which was why Oishi stood there at the moment, quickly placing the items upright and organizing them. “And this is nice, but we’re doing microscope work.” He smiled, leaving Kikumaru for only a moment to retrieve it himself.
The lab itself was basic cell identification and diagramming. Oishi produced several slides for Eiji to look at, pointing out different parts and explaining them in hope he had the student’s undivided attention. Beyond that, he helped him focus the microscope, using the different magnifications, though as a whole, the class time managed to pass quickly with the two of them hunched over the microscope. Oishi only left Kikumaru to himself once more through the duration of the lab, to check on the other students.
For the first time in his life, Eiji found himself awake, engaged, and actively excited during a lab. He glowed under the attention lavished to him and listened attentively, eyes wide open, memorizing features of the slides as they were put before him. He pointed and gushed in excitement as through Oishi’s patient explanations, previously unknown words began to clear themselves in his head. Lysosomes, Golgi apparti, ribosomes all formed their own little storage departments in the redheads memory. As the redhead ate in all the sights and sounds provided by his teacher. He felt at ease, no longer worried about his failing grade, falling into the enthusiasm of learning, letting out a small whine when the class bell rang signifying the end of the period.
Proudly gathering up the slides, he carefully put them back, chattering excitedly about all the things that they had seen today. “And wow! The ribosomes looked so cool! And then the entire endoplasmic reticulum! It was like a tiny maze!” His bright eyes danced happily as he cleaned, mouth moving at breakneck pace.
And Oishi-- the previous accident currently forgotten to him --couldn’t help the wide grin that remained plastered on his face. The lab had been more beneficial than he thought and to see Kikumaru’s enthusiasm sparked toward his class was something else. Since it was the first time the redhead showed any initiative toward the subject. Oishi hoped this was the start of a long-running optimism and that Eiji would continue to have enough drive to improve his grade dramatically. “Good work today, Kikumaru-kun.” He wouldn’t deny he felt a little proud too.
That hit the spot. Kikumaru flushed a brilliant red, brightened by the praise that was rarely granted in this particular subject. He paused to soak in the feeling, his tail curling in pleasure, wrapping shyly around the leg of the table. "Hoi! Oishi sensei!" His lashes caught slightly as he blinked, caught up in his teacher's gaze. Really, Oishi had a nice smile now that he took the time to notice. A warm feeling began, pooling from the base of his tail and shooting up his back causing him to shiver slightly. "Thank you! It was so fun, nya!"
Opening his mouth, Oishi caught himself as he almost stated that ‘he hoped he could make every class this fun for him.’ Something like that would’ve been a bit too blunt, and maybe even a tad embarrassing, so Oishi just kept smiling at him. “See? Biology isn’t always bookwork. Maybe you’ll have more fun more often.”
Glancing around for a moment, he found the other students were heading off to their next class. With that in mind, he turned back to Kikumaru. “Ah, and there’s no homework today, so you may go--” Though Oishi paused, remembering the… kiss from earlier and flushed slightly. Maybe it would be better to inform the student now before he could procrastinate on it, but he wasn’t 100% sure.
Kikumaru was washing his hands when the no homework comment reached his ears and he yowled in excitement, "WAHOI! No homework!" accidentally bringing his hands too close to the faucet and soaking himself. "Heh. Oops." Turning around, sopping wet, he bounced back to his stuff and shook himself, splashing water all over the place before scooping up his books.
"Mm? Oishi sensei?" Eiji blinked slowly, leaning closely to inspect Oishi, who looked lost in his memories. He waved a hand over Oishi's eyes tentatively, his face mere centimeters away from Oishi's- their lips almost touching in a ghost of the accidental kiss that had transpired.
Blinking to find his vision flooded by sapphire eyes, Oishi froze. It didn’t help that he was gaping a bit too, and soon a quite bright shade of red flooded his cheeks. Finally able to move himself, he recoiled a few steps until he bumped into the desk behind him. “Ah, y-yes?” he stuttered.
And he thought he was used to Kikumaru being a rather cuddly person. Strange what one incident could do. Oishi was scattered into pieces.
"Nya, nothing. You seemed lost that's all." Eiji offered a quick smile before retreating, pulling his books close against him. "Anything else Oishi sensei? No homework. Check!"
“Um…” Oishi frowned at himself. He didn’t want to make the wrong decision, and in the end, it was his responsibility to tell Eiji, since he was Eiji’s teacher. “Actually, do you mind if I excuse you from your next class? I have something I’d like to discuss with you..”
A hundred worried thoughts ran through Eiji's head. "Whatever for?" Eiji asked, worry filling his crystal blue eyes, "I did good today, didn't I? I mean, I know I'm failing. But I'll get better quick soon! I promise! I promise Oishi sensei!" He reached out and grasped Oishi's arm worriedly, "I want to stay at Seven Moons." He bit his bottom lip nervously, his day souring automatically. He thought he had done good today, he had paid attention, the lab went well, Oishi sensei had offered to help him. Why? Why was this happening. Why did Oishi sensei want to talk to him now? After such a successful lab, Eiji just didn't get it.
“Kikumaru-kun, it’s okay,” Oishi replied softly. It was automatic, touching the students shoulder in a concerned gesture. There was no need for Eiji to work himself up about that anyways-- though he would have a reason to it a moment, but Oishi would rather not dwell on his reaction until it happened. “It has nothing to do with school… Why don’t you sit down?”
Confusion was evident in Eiji's eyes as he sat down, tapping his foot nervously. He was used to having discussions with teachers about grades, but this- something made him anxious. Placing his books down on his desk with a resounding thump, he glanced at Oishi, keeping his eyes hidden.
With Eiji sitting, Oishi was lost again, not knowing where to begin. So he slowly made his way to a nearby desk-- one that was across from the student --and perches on its corner, folding his hands. The least he could do now is be polite and admit everything. “Kikumaru-kun… you’re my student and the last thing I want is to have you feel uncomfortable around me… So I want you to know that when I woke you up in class today…” Oishi trailed off, knowing he was blushing madly, but it was no use. There was no way to say it so it didn’t sound as wrong. Taboo. He scratched the back of his head in embarrassment, looking down. “I… accidentally kissed you.”
"Na?" Eiji took one look and Oishi at burst out laughing. "You did what?!" he managed to gasp out between giggles. "Don't be ridiculous, Oishi sensei. I think I would most definitely know if that happened! Is that it, nya?" The redhead got up and stretched, eager to leave, brushing this off to the back of his mind. "Heh, Oishi sensei! You're really funny! But Kikumaru sama isn't THAT gullible!"
“I-I’m serious!” he was stuttering again, and looked like he was about to go into shock. He must’ve misjudged Eiji’s character greatly for not having suspected that reaction. He was on his feet again in an instant. “It happened, but it was an accident, Kikumaru-kun, so I give my sincerest apologies.” Now the shock was becoming something similar to desperation. Oishi knew if Eiji didn’t believe him, he’d be carrying around the guilt for a while.
Eiji froze when he realized that Oishi wasn't kidding. Slightly reeling from the revelation he gave a small laugh, uncertain in the thick air of the classroom. "Best kiss of your life?" he joked playfully, attempting to ease the tension that suddenly seemed to sprout.
Oishi was frowning though, still completely serious. “This isn’t a laughing matter, Kikumaru-kun.” Mostly because Oishi could quite easily loose his job over something like that, accident or not. “I just want you to understand the circumstances around it and that I didn’t mean for it to happen.” And he needed Eiji to forgive him, for his guilty conscious’ sake.
A hand waved in the air uncertainty, tossing aside the comment. "It's no problem." Eiji commented lightly, afraid that his voice would betray him. He didn't want to think about it right now. Turning around he picked up his books again and turned back to his teacher, "It's no problem." He repeated, whether more for himself or for the benefit of his teacher he didn't know. "Is that all Oishi sensei?" The redhead couldn't help the sllightest bit of frigidity that seemed into his voice.
Oishi was frozen again, an indecipherable look crossing his face, but it was gone as soon as it had appeared. “Yes, that is all.” With a sigh, he closed his eyes. Maybe… this reaction was better than the rest? Yet he couldn‘t help but feel sad, and some part of him felt like he‘d become quite familiar with the feeling. “You may go.”
Turning away, Kikumaru left the Biology room, pushing the incident to the back of his mind, puffing out his cheeks in annoyance, and stomping off to his next class.
And with the student gone, Oishi allowed his shoulders to finally sag. His posture looking defeated. In the end, he’d just return to his work anyways, allowing ungraded papers to act as a source of temporary escapism. He truly didn’t have any nerves left to dwell on it further. Though known as a worrier, sometimes he just had to hold himself back.
