Summary: Nanjiroh stops by Sengoku's room to give him a little gift.
Nanjiroh hefted a slim wooden case carefully as he walked towards a certain door in the hall. He made a note as he walked to have the cleaners come through a little early, it looked like the carpet needed to be vacuumed. Rapping his knuckles lightly on the door, he hid the case behind his back as he waited for an answer.
Sengoku had been re-stringing his yo-yo when he heard that knock on the door, instantly perking up at the sound-- he had a voluntary visitor!? Not one to make his visior wait, he immediately squawked out an "I'm coming!" as he tossed his yo-yo to the side and bounded for the door, nearly tripping over more than a few things that were left lying on the floor. He yanked the door back, eyes wide and eager to see just who was visiting him, but they lit up more when he saw who it was.
"Nanjinanjinanjinanji-saaaaan~!" Sengoku exploded, remembering to at least tack on that honorific. "Come inside!" he happily invited the other, grabbing onto the headmaster's shoulder and yanking him inside.
Eyes widening, Nanjiroh struggled to both not drop the case with its breakable contents as well as keep it hidden behind his back. Kicking the door shut with his heel, he puffed up his chest proudly with a wide grin.
"I have a surprise for you, Kiyosumi~!" He sing-songed, the other man's enthusiasm rubbing off. "Pick a hand, left or right?"
Sengoku froze for a shocked moment before he was jumping up and down in glee like a small child. "Ooooh~!!!! A game!!! A game a game~!" he squawked happily. "Um umumumum... UP! I mean-- LEFT!" he nearly shouted at Nanjiroh, stopping his bouncing long enough to point wildly at Nanjiroh's right arm.
Figuring that was good enough since that qualified as Sengoku's left, Nanjiroh pulled the wooden case from behind his back. It was sleek and made of walnut, varnished a deep burgundy. It had a handle on the front with a tiny padlock placed just underneath in the middle.
"Now - don't shake it." He warned, knowing Sengoku's curiosity. "Here's the key." He said, digging in his pocket a moment and pulled out a small key on a silver chain.
"This is so only you can open your case, no one else is allowed to have what's inside, got that?"
Sengoku was nearly brimming with joy. "A present!? Just for me~? From Nanji-san??" He looked like he was about to faint. "What is it what is it!?" he demanded, making grabby hands at the small, shiny key. "If it's just for me and you don't want me to share it I won't!" he promised, though sharing things was fun too!
Nanjiroh's face grew a little more serious as he gave Sengoku the key. "This is something for you to use at your discretion. However, when you do, I want you to make a log of what happens after you've used it." He watched as Sengoku opened the case, revealing row upon row of tiny glass bottles embedded in black velvet.
"This is something that will allow you to feel more than the normal Zero; it hightens the sensitivity in your nerves." Pulling out a vial carefully, he slid aside a tiny latch on a flap and lifted it to reveal a syringe and small stock of needles. "You inject it into your bloodstream, say, on your elbow where you can see the vein. Wait a few minutes and you should feel it working."
He set the case down on Sengoku's bed, giving the man a stern look. "This is for you, and only you. It's made to work especially with your DNA so it's important not to let anyone else - even another Zero - use it. Do you understand?"
It took all of Sengoku's willpower to keep from squealing in delight at the syringes; just those would've nearly been the bestest best present he'd ever had! But from the look on Nanjiroh's face, it didn't look like it was just some birthday gift.
Sengoku managed to settle down, only now just fidgeting slightly as he popped the key into his pocket. Glancing up, he smiled wide at the older man before he bowed deeply in appreciation. "No one can use it but me because of all that DNA stuff~ Yup, got it!" he confirmed, staying in that position for a moment longer before he straightened. Tilting his head, he glanced at Nanjiroh curiously. "But why all this?" he asked. He'd never gotten anything like that before, mostly because the scientists had always administered other drugs for him during check ups and research assignments. This had to be just from Nanjiroh himself!
"It's something that I've been working on with your Mother." Nanjiroh replied. "Mariko and I worked on this, choosing you as the one to well, test it on. That's why it's coded to your genes. It could potentially harm anyone else who uses it." Sitting down next to the case on the bed, he ran a hand through his hair. Part of him still had some misgivings about this whole thing, but...
"It's a way for you to feel more... human. You'll be able to feel varying degrees of pain, just like me."
That was the part that was making a slightly sour taste in the back of his mouth. One didn't usually look to cause pain in those they cared for. Quite the opposite.
Now that was interesting~
Sengoku plopped himself on the bed on the opposite side of the case, turning to sit cross-legged on his bed, facing Nanjiroh. "Feel more human?" he asked, chuckling a little at that. Of course he knew he wasn't like any other person but he'd always thought he was at least human; oh well. "I always thought that was the point~ not to feel any pain." Oh, those silly scientists~ they just can't make up their minds, can they?
Nanjiroh cleared his throat a little. "Well... It was our idea to give you the choice yourself. Normal Zeros cannot tell when they've breached the threshold of pain. With this, you will be the first."
Turning the small vial carefully in his fingers, he said quietly, "I'm willing to test this with you, so you'll know if you're using too much. A pinch to me should feel like a pinch to you."
Sengoku merely smiled wide. "You make me feel soooo special, Nanji-san~" He was, after all, going to be the first Zero ever to feel something more than a dull impact. "So you want me to try this now?" he asked, scooting over to Nanjiroh and looking at the vial with curiosity. "I get to poke myself, right~? That's always the best part~"
"Yes.." Nanjiroh replied, caught off-guard. The best part? He was starting to wonder if maybe they should have chosen someone else for the first testing...
"I want to make sure you know how to do this properly." He handed the vial to Sengoku, then removed the syringe from the case, as well as a needle. Attaching the needle to the syringe was a simple act, after which he handed that to the other man as well.
"I see them do it to me all the time~ it shouldn't be that hard," Sengoku assured the older man, taking the syringe and emptying the vial into it. "Let's see... where to stick it?" he wondered to himself as he pulled up his sleeve and glanced down at his arm.
"Oi, oi. Then you should have noticed this part." Nanjiroh plucked the syringe out of Sengoku's hand and pointed it towards the ceiling, pressing slowly on the plunger to force air out until there was only the serum. "This is important; you don't need an air bubble to be the thing that kills you." He said, handing it back.
Sengoku grinned sheepishly. "Oops~ forgot about that," he admitted, dipping his head slightly. "But that wouldn't be a fun way to go," he agreed, thinking that it would've been boring anyhow. Glancing down at his arm again, he let the needle hover above his skin before he let it sink into what looked to be a vein. "And then... the squeeze!" He pushed down on the plunger and let the serum drain into his blood.
Nanjiroh waited a moment, then gently pried the syringe out of Sengoku's hand. "When you're finished, always throw away the needle. If you run out, come to me or Mariko and we'll give you more. The serum however, takes time to make so try to go easy on how much you use at once." It was also a way of controlling how much they gave him at once. After all, they didn't need to accidentally get him addicted.
"How do you feel?"
Sengoku remained still for a few moments, wondering if he did feel any different. "Hm... are you sure you gave me the right one? I don't feel any different~"
Well, that was good news. If it had been too much, Nanjiroh was sure Sengoku would have been feeling pain from simply sitting down, thanks to overly-sensitized nerves.
Grinning slightly, he reached over and pinched Sen's ass. Still felt the same of course, but hopefully this time a better reaction!
Sengoku was merely watching Nanjiroh sneak a hand over (nothing too threatening, it seemed), but when he felt those fingers close in on a patch of skin, his eyes suddenly widened and he yelped aloud, jumping from his seat and falling over to the floor.
"OWWWWWW!"
Blinking, Nanjiroh jumped up to hover over Sengoku. "Oi, was it the pinch that made you cry like a baby, or the part where you fell on your ass?"
Sengoku looked almost upset, frowning a bit as he looked up at Nanjiroh. "Both..." He sniffled for a moment before bouncing up again and wiggling his butt at the other man. "Do it again!"
Now there was something he hadn't been expecting, though given Sengoku's enthusiasm, perhaps he should have. "How about this time, you let me be sure you haven't had too much. Here. I'm going to pinch with slowly increasing pressure, and you tell me, on a level of one to ten, how much it hurts."
Taking Sengoku's arm, he chose a fleshy part and slowly started to apply pressure, stopping when he was barely pinching at all.
Sengoku had a thoughtful look on his face. "Hmmm... one!" Yeah, that sounded like a good answer.
Nodding, Nanjiroh went with that and increased the pressure to where the pinch should feel uncomfortable, but still on the verge of causing pain. "How about now?"
Immediately, the orange-haired man shook his head, a frown apparent on his face. "I don't like iiiiit! It's like a six!"
Already a six? Nanjiroh paused and let go, applying the same amount of pressure to his own arm just to be sure.
"I think it might be a good idea to lower the dosage a small amount, until what you felt just then is closer to a four or a five." He ruffled Sengoku's hair affectionately. "Oh, this should mean you can feel the differences in air temperature as well. Maybe this time you won't accidentally scald yourself in the shower, eh?"
Pouting just a bit, Sengoku pulled his arm back and rubbed at the pinched area protectively. "But I haven't done that in a really, really, really long time!" He protested. But the idea of being scalded and having it hurt was an intriguing idea, if not scary.
"Yes well, that's because we marked your shower with where you should stop with the hot water." Nanjiroh helped Sen to stand once more, then straightened the hair he'd mussed, ignoring the part that curled right back out of place anyway. "I want you to be responsible with this, and use your journal to mark your own findings with it."
"Ooh yeah, that helps a lot!" Sengoku chimed in once he was standing, all smiles again now that he felt much better; this pain stuff wasn't what it was cut out to be!
Shutting his eyes as his hair was straightened, he might've purred a bit at the attention-- he always did like it when people were this nice to him, Nanjiroh especially since Sengoku didn't usually see him often. Opening his eyes, he smiled earnestly at the older man and stepped up, giving him a nice big hug and a soft kiss on the cheek. "Nanji-san's always looking out for me~ I'll be careful with it!" He told the headmaster, promising him that he won't overdose or something stupid like that-- it was the least he could do.
Nanjiroh stood there wide-eyed for a second, then felt embarrassment making his face grow hot. He returned the hug somewhat awkwardly, unsure what to think of being kissed by another male, even if it was just on the cheek. "Uh, yes well, um... I think I'll leave you to it then..."
Slipping away, he ducked out of the room and made his way back to the lab, a small warm and fuzzy feeling hidden away for later dissection.
Sengoku was beaming when Nanjiroh made his way out-- he hugged him back! But now that the other man was gone, Sengoku was left alone to do his own bidding.
Now, what should he try next? The wall looked like a good place to start.
