“You fucking idiot!” Nova exclaimed, his fits gripping the others shirt as he shoved Liberta against the wall. “I knew you were stupid but this? This is a whole new level!”

“Ow,” Liberta complained, rubbing the back of his head with a hand. He took in the shorter males angry navy eyes and unusually messy hair, as though he’d just ran his hands through it. “Hey, what’s with you?”

“You!” Nova declared, his fists tightening their grip. “You challenged Papa, you idiot!”

Liberta huffed, “You stopped me. Which I’m still upset about, chickpea!” For the first time Liberta noticed the tears forming in Nova’s eyes. “Whoa, what’s wr-”

“I thought he was going to hurt you,” Nova mumbled, burying his head in Liberta’s chest. “I thought…I thought you were gone…”

“What? You have no confidence in me, do you?” Liberta tried to laugh it off. In the end, he just felt bad about the whole thing. Carefully, unsure if this was a joke or not, he placed a hand on the small of Nova’s back, “I’m sorry Nova...”

Nova’s voice was muffled by Liberta’s shirt as he said, “If I asked you to would you kiss me?”

“W-what?” green eyes widened, just a bit. Nova had always been his rival, but he felt something stir inside of him at the request.

“Just once Liberta.”

Feeling shy for what seemed like the first time in his life, Liberta choked out, “Y-Yeah.” He tilted his head down, intent on making it easier for their lips to touch considering the others height, but was promptly bonked in the nose. His head thunked against the wall from the force. “Itai, itai.”

A laugh made him look down to find Nova had retracted his hands from his shirt in favor of covering his mouth. “Idiot,” Nova teased, rocking away from Liberta on the balls of his feet. When he stopped laughing, he turned on his feet and began walking away, “See you idiot.”

“Wha-? I thought-”

“A momentary lapse in judgment,” Nova replied swiftly, waving a hand in farewell as he turned a corner.

The incident gets left behind as the Arcana Duello takes over their lives.

Between any preparations their groups are doing, assuring Felicita that yes they really do want to do this for her and no there isn’t anything else they would wish for, and training their Arcana’s they barely have time to themselves - much less time to let their thoughts linger on it.

A string of curses left Liberta’s mouth as he was escorted off the field with Pace’s help.

He’d won his match for the day, but there was a nasty gash in his leg and a sense of exhaustion from the first good battle he’d had that made it a little hard to walk.

Felicita fussed over him, as she does with all of the boys who have sworn to win this thing for her and as they would do if she were to get injured, before Dante picked him up and whisked him away to the infirmary. Briefly, he wondered how Nova’s match had went.

Then the sedatives kicked in.

Liberta woke up several hours later, long after the sky had gone dark and everyone had gone to sleep, to the sound of the curtain around him rustling. His eyes fluttered open just as a familiar shape took up residence in a the chair to his left.

He waited to see if the other would say anything for a moment.

His mouth felt sticky as he called out, “Nova?”

Nova glanced up, his eyes rimmed with a twinge of red and his hair looking a little mused, from the cup of coffee he’d been tracing his fingers over. Something - relief? - flooded his voice as he answered, “Your awake.”

“Mhm…” Liberta hummed, using the little bit of strength he still had to sit up. “What are you doing here? It’s late isn’t it?”

“I uh…” he glanced around nervously. “Shifts! We were taking shifts watching over you.” Liberta watched as Nova stood up in what looked like a panic, “I’ll go tell Fel that you’re up.”

Liberta stopped him, reaching out and grabbing the others arm, “Why are you lying?”

“I’m not-”

“You do this funny thing with your nose when you’re lying,” Liberta pointed out. He yanked on Nova’s arm gently and sent the boy stumbling into the bed with him. The blonde shifted, taking in the way Nova looked again before asking gently, “Have you even slept yet? You look like hell.”

Something resembling a blush settled itself on Nova’s face, “O-Of course I slept! I wasn’t that worried about you. It wasn’t that-”

“You were worried about me?”

Nova’s blush deepened before his head dropped, “That man has killed people before…”

“I know.” Liberta hummed to himself before saying, “Hey Nova…”

“Mhm?”

“Can I take that kiss now?” Nova’s eyes widened before he hesitantly nodded. A small smile graced Liberta’s lips as he placed his hand on the back of Nova’s head and smashed their lips together.

The kiss felt, if they were being honest with themselves, just a little perfect.

When they pulled apart for air, Liberta wrapped his arm around Nova’s arm and pulled him down onto the bed with him. “W-What are you doing?” Nova questioned, thrashing in an attempt to get up.

“Just go to sleep Nova.”
