2006 - Xing
It was their first Christmas away from home where their families were probably curled up in the family room telling stories or drinking cocoa. Luckily for Kevin, though, he had three hyungs that always took care of him. It was the same three hyungs that were practically tossing presents his way as they sat on the floor of their dorm. Yume smiled childishly as he watched Kevin pick apart the wrapping paper of his present and Kevin almost, almost, laughed out loud but the seriousness of the situation was too strong. Kevin smiled happy and threw himself at his hyung, thanking him a million times over for his wonderful gift. The same went with Hyesung, too. He knew the eldest was a little distant from them but this Christmas, Kevin did see that side of him. Hyesung hugged everyone, smiled at them, and even went as far as babying Kevin.
It was Marumir that worried Kevin the most. Before December came around, they had been inseparable, but the moment Kevin’s birthday passed, the older male had become the total opposite. And Kevin didn’t like it. He watched Marumir carefully as he handed him his present. He took the small boxin his slim hands, eyes still on the older boy’s. Delicately, afraid to break whatever was inside, Kevin pulled the solver paper from around the box. He took his time by folding the paper and lying beside him on the floor. He could tell the other two were getting impatient from the agonizing wait but Kevin didn’t care-he was opening his present.
“H-Hyung…” Kevin’s breath caught in his throatwhen he opened the lid to the blue box that stared up at him from the palm of his hand. “How… Why…” Inside was an opened locket with a photo of him, his sister, mother, and father. It was the same photo, but smaller, that he had lost during the move from his San Francisco home to the Xing trainee dorm.
Marumir fidgeted and Kevin knew that even though he always started and ended interviews, he was just as shy as he was when all eyes were on him. “I… I know I should have given the photo to you after I found out you had beenlooking for it. I saw it lying on the ground where the van had dropped you off. After I put it up in my room for safe keeping and up until you talked about it at your birthday dinner, I have forgotten about it. I went around the city looking for that locket and someone to make the photo smaller and put in there. It’s a way for you to keep you family with you.”
Kevin had tears in his eyes as he crawled pastHyesung and Yume to wrapped Marumir in a tight embrace. When they parted, they smiled at one another cheekily before giggling like children. They Hyesung laughed and say something about dinner that they all agreed on. As they worked in the kitchen to make dinner, they listened to Holiday songs, singing along, and taking parts and pretending they were singing to their fans. When they sat at the table, they said grace and ate. It wasn’t extravagant, and it wasn’t with their real families, but that night, Kevin felt warm and at home, even if he was treated like the maknae whenever the moment aroused.
2007 - Xing
They finished their Christmas concert earlier than Kevin had expected but that was more than alright with him as he called for a taxi. He was on his way to see his best friend and spend Christmas with him. It was Christmas Eve and his friend had just returned from a trip to Australia with his own hyung, but they had split ways at different hotels since the other’s hyung was going to spend the Holiday with his friends and fellow members, SS501.
The former member of Xing, Marumir, or now called Kibum, wasn’t expecting Kevin to show up and he knew it as he sent a smiley-face text to him, silently laughing in the backseat of the taxi at a text he had received from the older one. It was going to be their second Christmas together since the year before he had left the group and Kevin found himself smiling a dummy. Kibum was his best friend and spending Christmas alone with him was something that Kevin had wanted to do since 2006.
He pulled up to the hotel Hyung Joon had informed him Kibum would be at and stepped from the cab, paying the fee and leaving a tip. Hesitantly, he walked into the large building. Stepping into the lobby was eye-blinding with all the bright lights illuminating the gold interior. From the outside, no one would guess that the inside would be so bright in royal colors. Kevin smiled giddily.
He waiting in line at the receptionist’s desk and when it was his turn, he forgot why he was there. It took him a minute to remember and to find his voice. He asked for Kim Ki Bum, said that he was a friend and was there to surprise him for Christmas. The lady looked sympathetic, maybe because she thought Kibum was a loner or Kevin was just lonely, but she gave him the floor and room number, which he happily pranced to.
The elevator ride was short but quiet since it was just him. When the ding sounded for the floor, his heart stopped. He was nervous. He felt like he was about to step on stage for the first time again. He felt the vertigo return and his palms were sweat, but none of that stopped him as he walked down the carpeted hall, eyes searching for that specific room number. The door that stared mockingly back at him was at the end of the long corridor. The numbers twinkled from the above lights, beckoning him to knock, and he did; softly and almost too quietly. For a moment, nothing happened and he thought about knocking again. With his hand in a fist in midair, the door slowly opened, revealing two brown orbs that seared into Kevin’s soul.
The boy took a step back when the door was flung open and Kibum stood there, hovering over him in a pair of jeans and v-neck t-shirt that clung to his slowly transforming body. The material hugged him, revealing the crevasses of developing abs, something that immediately caught Kevin’s eyes. He blushed when Kibum noticed and smirked at him the way he would when he would catch the boy relieving himself. The older one stepped aside, giving room for Kevin to walk in and step past him. But the moment Kevin stepped foot into the threshold, he was pulled into a warm embrace that made Kevin forget that it was winter and it was freezing outside.
“Kevin, what are you doing here?” Kibum’s hands moved in Kevin’s hair, down his back, over his arms, anywhere that was solid and would confirm that Kevin was really there. “What is my little maknae doing here? Did you come to see hyung because you knew he was lonely?”
Kevin pushed away with a scoff, stepping past Kibum with a sly smile. “I’m here because your little maknae wants his Christmas presents.”
Kibum let out a laugh. He smiled softly at Kevin as he closed the door. “Well, I only have a present for you, but you have to wait for tomorrow. Wait,” Kibum stopped an stared as Kevin removed his shoes and slipped on a pair of slippers, “are you staying with me tonight or does company want you to return back to the dorm?”
“We’re on vacation,” was Kevin’s distracted reply as he walked around the room, fingers brushing delicate surfaces and skimming across the furniture. “This is a nice place, Hyung. It’s big, too.”
Kibum shrugged, following slowly behind Kevin, “It’s a little lonely and dark since there are no Christmas lights.”
“But you have a tree. I’m glad that you have a tree… It wouldn’t be Christmas without one!” Kevin turned on his heel to beam at Kibum the way he always would when he was happy and comfortable. “Hyung, I’m sorry but I wasn’t able to buy you a gift.”
Chuckling, Kibum beckoned Kevin into the kitchen with a wave of his hand. “Well, you’re here aren’t you? But…” His voice became playfully suggestive, “if you want to give me a gift you can always bake cookies with me.”
Kevin blinked before raising a brow and smiling teasingly at the older one. “Oh, does my mighty hyung not know how to bake cookies?”
“Shuddup, Kevin. Are you gonna help me or not?” The blush that stained Kibum’s cheeks amused Kevin immensely, but the younger one nodded and joined Kibum in the kitchen, dawning on an apron and all.
Kibum pulled out the box of unneeded cookie dough and read the directions aloud, instructing Kevin to grab the ingredients as he spoke. The mixing process was easy and quick but waiting for the oven to heat up was what drove Kevin to the brink of insanity. As expensive as the place was, the oven was slow and lacked anything that would prove that it was new or even up to date. Kibum seemed content, though, with his fingers wiggling around in Kevin’s hair, playing with the dyed strands nonchalantly. When the oven was ready, Kevin placed the cookie-sheet on the top rack and timed the cooking process, taking the time to talk with Kibum.
“Hyung, how was Australia?”
The elder one shrugged as he reached his arm out to wipe some cookie dough off of Kevin’s cheek, “It was boring just like school. No cuties no nothing to keep me occupied.”
Kevin giggled, “Cuties? You’re a whore, Hyung.”
“Kevin! What vulgar language… But for some reason it’s cute when you say it.” Kibum patted the pouting boy’s head, smiling at his innocence. “But don’t say things like that in public, people might take advantage of your cuteness.”
The two talked until time was up for the cookies, then they started talking again through the process of eating, bathing, and getting ready for bed, and that was when Kevin got quiet and awfully shy. Kibum was sitting on the bed, the only bed that was in the room, while Kevin stood against the closed bedroom door, hesitating and fidgeting. He didn’t say or do anything, just stared long and hard at his feet. It wasn’t like they had never shared a bed together, but for Kevin, this was different. They weren’t band mates anymore, and in all actuality, he wasn’t even allowed to be there with Kibum.
“Kevin-ah, are you coming to bed?”
Kevin fidgeted at door before stepping towards the bed and climbing in beside Kibum, his face flushed when he accidentally brushed the elder one’s arm. Goosebumps rose across his sensitive skin and he jumped slightly when Kibum’s body heat enveloped him and strong arms embraced him from behind. Kibum’s solid chest was pressed against his back and his hot breath breezed against the shell of his ear:
“Thank you for spending this Christmas with me, Kevin, it means a lot.”
Kevin nodded slowly, not trusting his voice at the moment. He didn’t need to talk, though, because before he knew it, Kibum’s breath had evened and his arms had gone limp. He sighed contently yet nervously. With Kibum as close as he was, Kevin felt safe and at home, but that didn’t stop him from staying awake at least an hour after Kibum had fallen asleep, thinking and contemplating about everything up to this point in their relationship.
When sun shone into the bedroom, waking Kevin up, the boy lurched forward when the weight that had occupied his waist disappeared. His eyes darted around the room, sighing when he saw that the door was ajar and the smell of pancakes and bacon wafted in. He smiled to himself as he rose from the sheets and covers, untangling himself from the cushiony mess. He didn’t look in a mirror or run a brush through his hair; he simply carded his hand through his hair and walked out of the room, following the intoxicating smell until he tip-toed into the kitchen, chortling silently at the sight of Kibum standing at the stove with a pink, frilly apron on. He sighed, though, and pressed his chin softly to Kibum’s shoulder, grinning when the older boy jumped, surprised by Kevin’s sudden show of homely affection.
“Morning, Binnie.”
“Good morning.”
“Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas.” Kevin closed his eyes, too enticed by Kibum’s cinnamon smell to release the older one was leaning back into him, biting his lip softly each time his breath would skim over his exposed neck.
“Do you wanna eat first or exchange gifts?”
Kibum drew back, turning around to stare bewildered down at the boy that smiled up at him. “I thought you said you didn’t have anything for me.”
Kevin shrugged his shoulders. “I said I wasn’t able to buy you one, never said that I didn’t have one for you.”
Kibum made a noise that made Kevin giggle. “Fine, we’ll exchange after I finish this. Just meet me in the TV. room.” Kibum turned back around and Kevin swore he saw Kibum hurrying with the eggs that he was currently working on.
Smiling like an idiot, Kevin skipped from the kitchen to fetch his bag and recover Kibum’s gift. He pulled the smell box from the bag and opened it, smiling when the gift winked up at him with a bright gleam. He quickly closed the box and ran to sit on the couch, waiting anxiously for Kibum to walk in a few minutes later. When the older one walked in, small remnants of flours coasting his face, Kevin giggled, blushing shyly when the older one glared at him, but soon he shrugged and joined Kevin on the couch, fishing something out of his pocket.
“I wasn’t really expecting you to actually come over for Christmas, but I’m so glad you did. I got this while I was in Australia because the moment I saw it, I thought of you.”
With those words said, Kevin watched Kibum open the small, round box with a thumping heart that almost stopped when the pair of couple rings stared up at him mockingly. They shined with bright brilliance, much better than the gift he bought. Fidgeting a little, he did the same, biting his bottom lip when Kibum just stared at his own pair of couple rings that seemed to no longer wink at him. Silence fell between them as Kibum just stared and blinked; the waiting almost painful for Kevin.
Small chuckles came out in snippets from Kibum before they turned into full blown laughs. The older male threw himself back against the couch, holding his stomach as the laughter continued to bellow from his singer’s lungs. When Kibum finally stopped, to Kevin’s delight, he wiped tears from the corners of his eyes and pulled the stunned Kevin into a tight, almost too friendly, embrace.
“We think too much alike. How about when all the stores open up, we buy chains to wear one ring on and wear the other on our fingers?”
Kevin nodded, the heat in his cheeks evident.
“Merry Christmas, Binnie.”
U-KISS (2008)
Kevin sighed when the cool floor practically soaked through his blue sweat pants. This wasn’t his ideal Christmas, just sitting in a dance studio with four guys he didn’t really know and exchanging Christmas cards and teaching each other dance moves. He had actually planned on spending the day with his sister and possibly, maybe, hopefully, his best friend. Sadly, though, this meeting of the five trainees was mandatory. It didn’t matter to Kevin; he actually tuned everything out until his name was called.
“Kevin, don’t be rude; stand up and greet the new trainee for NH’s new boy band.”
With a groan, he did as he was told, stopping in mid stand when he looked up and over at the entrance of the room. His breathing stopped but he knew he wasn’t dead by the erratic thumping of his pulsating heart. The way the trainee stared back with shining eyes and rosy cheeks showed that he had been in the snow but also that he wasn’t at all phased by their meeting or how this Christmas was turning into something better than Kevin had hoped.
“Kibum, meet Kevin Woo.”
The two smiled as they shook hands, the gesture quickly turning into an all out embrace of two friends laughing. The ignored the odd stares they received. Kibum basked in the warmth Kevin offered him and Kevin basked in the homely Christmas Kibum’s arms offered.
That night wasn’t like any other. The two friends sat up in the trainee dorm, both cuddling and hugging atop Kevin’s pink covered bed that Kibum had shamelessly complained about in front of everyone. Even though Kevin knew the older one was trying to embarrass him, like usual, he just smiled and pulled him into the room, closing and locking the door behind him. Where they stayed was a dorm but Kevin being the shy boy he was, he chose the last room that still had a spare bed, now deeming it at Kibum’s.
“We’re together again.”
“Yeah; will these people ever learn that you and I can’t be separated?”
Kevin giggled a little, nuzzling against his best friend that was also his almost-but-not-really boyfriend. “I don’t think so. But it’s okay, as long as I still get to spend Christmas with you. It’s not a wonderful day without you…”
Kibum kissed Kevin’s temple and ruffled his hair, “Same goes for me. What would I be doing right now if I was still at home with my hyung?”
“Watching porn and pretending your hand was my mouth.”
“Kevin!” Kibum shot up in the bed, making Kevin’s head loll off onto the bed with a soft, silent thump.
“What?! It’s true and you better not say otherwise.” Kevin sat up next to Kibum, smiling when he caught site of the older one blushing. “You know it’s true.”
“Yeah, but you said so…calmly like it was such a natural thing to say in such a situation.”
“What was I suppose to say? Sitting on the couch with your hyung eating cookies?”
Kibum nodded, “That would have been more understated than what you did say.”
“You know you still want it.”
“Yeah…”
“You want it bad.”
“Yes I do…”
“Too bad, you have to wait until New Years; I’m not quite old enough to be indulging in such active-“ Kevin was unable to finish his sentence because Kibum was suddenly attacking him with his fingers, tinkling every part of his body that he knew would have the younger one giggling and writhing around.
“That’s a load of bull, but I got ya. Just wait until its lights out.”
