“Did you see the look on the grooms face when they unveiled his cake?”Josh asked, his laughter even more musical than the rows of slot machines they were passing to get to the elevators. “It was like it was his first time hearing their theme. I’ve never seen someone turn puce so quickly before.”
Rachel giggled to herself as she stepped into the elevator ahead of Josh. “Well, at least it will make for some interesting pictures.” She said, smoothing down her blush colored dress.
The theme had been an upscaled Steel Magnolias, original and not quite fitting Vegas’ glitzy lifestyle but fun all the same. The bride played Shelby in an off broadway revival to rave reviews, and she all butlived her character, even down to her colors of blush and bashful.
“You sure laid on the southern charm with that bridesmaid though. Should I tell Quinn to be on alert for love-struck and lonely members of the bridal party?” Rachel teased, stepping closer to Josh as more guests loaded onto the elevator.
Josh grinned at her as the boisterous guests just as quickly reached their desired floor and piled out of the car. “I was nothing but polite.” He assured her with a wink.
“I feel bad for Quinn and Will. We’ve been so busy with the wedding we haven’t even had a chance to see them.” Rachel said, watching the numbers climb as each floor passed. “Maybe we should all go for dinner and a show to make it up to them?”
Rachel turned to Josh who murmured his agreement, guiding her off the elevator with a gentle hand on her back. She knew he’d agree. He usually agreed to all her random ideas and knowing she always had backup for her crazy plans made her feel a little bit better. She allowed herself to get lost in planning the evening, almost colliding with someone making their way back from the ice machine.
“Oh I am sorry…” Rachel trailed off; voice lost as she absorbed the sight of a terry cloth covered Will standing next to her.
She felt her stomach drop as she tried to rationalize his wandering around in a robe, his guilty expression doing nothing to ease her fears. “No. No, no, no.” She mumbled to herself, hands shaking as she pushed past Will and into their shared suite.
Rachel could feel Josh behind her as she stood in the entryway, heart pounding. The tee she had given Will for his birthday was strewn over the bar, his cargo shorts pooled on the tile behind it. Lace was intermixed with the khaki, definitely feminine, as was the bra hanging off the barstool.
“Will baby, did you get the ice?” Quinn asked, as she all but skipped into the living room, a similar robe wrapped around her smaller frame.
Her brilliant smile faded as her gaze fell on Josh and Rachel, a cornered look appeared in her eyes as she looked for Will. “I…” She
tried, closing her mouth when no reasonable explanation came pouring out.
“What’s going on here?” Rachel asked, her body literally trembling as she fought the desire to just shut down. She glanced between Quinn and Will who was now standing awkwardly in the room, still clutching the bucket of ice.
“We.. uh…” Will said, edging away from Josh and closer to Quinn. “It’s not as bad as it seems.”
Rachel scoffed, “Really? Because it looks like you are fucking my best friend, and that is as bad as it seems.”
She looked between them not receiving an answer, “How long has this been going on?” She asked, waiting a second before yelling more firmly. “How long?”
Quinn jumped at her raised voice. “A month, month and a half.” She responded quietly, as least having the decency to look at Rachel as she answered.
Rachel drew in a shaky breath as the news hit her. Almost two months. Two months of lies, two months of trust. She felt like her world was falling apart. This couldn’t be happening. Not to them.
“We didn’t plan it this way.” Will tried, clearly trying to work up an explanation. “We were lonely and needed someone to talk to. You guys were never around so we leaned on each other. Baby, it doesn’t mean anything.” He reached a hand out to pull her into him.
Rachel retched herself out of his grasp. She caught sight of Quinn’s stricken expression. Clearly she wasn’t as flippant about their affair as he was which only made this whole situation worse. “Don’t ‘baby’ me, Will.” She said coldly, hand over her chest in an attempt to keep her heart from shattering. “We are through. You hear me? This is it. Enjoy your little love nest because I am done.”
She turned around, bolting for the door. She needed to get out and get out now. Her quick footfalls echoed through the empty halls as she ran for the elevator. She could hear someone quickly following as she frantically pressed the button. The last thing she wanted was to be cornered by Will in an elevator.
The doors opened just as the footsteps approached, “Rachel, please wait.” Josh asked, stepping inside with her and wrapping her in a hug. She could feel his heart pounding as she leaned on him, openly sobbing as he held her.
“Shhh, it’s going to be okay.” He whispered, the situation so similar to her scare years before it made his heart ache. “Everything is going to be okay.”
