CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Cho Hakkai, Saiyuki
In-Game Name: Cho Hakkai (formerly Cho Gonou)
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Position & Ship: Serenity, doctor

Appearance: Hakkai is a tall, lanky young man with a warm smile, messy brown hair, and green eyes. The truly observant may be able to tell that his right eye is actually a fake--a magitech prosthetic that functions well enough to give him depth perception, but is otherwise nearly blind. He wears glasses to further improve his vision. In addition, he sports a large ugly scar across his abdomen, which is usually hidden by his clothing.

Hakkai tends to favor clothes that, while in good repair, range on the slightly baggy side of the spectrum, giving him the look of the absent-minded scholar he used to be.

On his left ear, he wears three silver cuffs. These cuffs are actually magitech limiters which regulate his demihuman abilities and allow him to retain his human appearance. When the limiters are removed, Hakkai is transformed, fingernails becoming claws, ears becoming pointed, and his left eye becoming yellow and slitted like a cat's. Furthermore, his skin becomes swirled with black vine 'tattoos' (see abilities for details). Hakkai prefers to retain his human appearance whenever possible.

Personality: Hakkai comes across as an intelligent, well-mannered young man with a soft-spoken demeanor and a quick smile. He can be somewhat absent-minded, and what one might term a 'home-body,' in that he enjoys cleaning, cooking, and other activities more usually suited to house-wives. Hakkai is well read and enjoys learning (he used to work as a school teacher, in fact) and is full of strange, possibly useless information. He also possesses a good memory, and is fairly capable when it comes to 'reading' people (which makes him killer when it comes to poker).

His sense of humor is quirky, and due to the fact that he nearly never shows anger, it can be difficult to tell if his cheerfully delivered barbs are honest or in jest, which some people find rather off-putting. He puts forth an optimistic attitude even in the face of severe adversity, though he is perfectly capable of treating a given situation with the seriousness it is due. He's not a clown, so much as someone who seeks to keep everyone around him in good spirits even when the going gets rough.

This affable, if odd, exterior hides a much darker side which--thankfully--is rarely seen. It's a part of him that only emerges fueled by a deep feeling of hurt and rage, a need for vengeance that can take a horrifying toll on those unfortunate enough to provoke it. It's a part of himself that Hakkai has tried to put away, something he hopes very dearly will remain in his past. Due to the circumstances of his life, there is also a lingering sense of melancholy about him that emerges from time to time, a result of feelings of guilt and self-depreciation in regards to the crimes he committed in the past.

When his limiters are removed to release his full demihuman power, there is always the risk that Hakkai will lose his sense of self and be unable to control his actions unless someone acts to stop him. It is for this reason, along with a certain distaste for what he has become, that causes him to wear power-limiting devices on a daily basis.

Abilities/Weapons: Hakkai practices kikou jutsu (chi manipulation) which allows him to manipulate his chi into blasts and force shields, suitable for defending against a small number of armed individuals or shielding himself and others in his immediate vicinity from attacks. He can also use this ability to heal others, though how well he can do this depends on the nature of the injury. He can heal wounds, for example, but cannot replenish the blood a person may have lost as a result of the wound. He also has moderate hand-to-hand combat skills.

When his full demihuman abilities are unleashed, Hakkai has enhanced strength, speed, and agility. In addition, he can control the vine 'tattoos' that cover his body in this form, sending them out across any surface he touches to ensnare others.

How well can your character hack?: Moderately well, he's a well-learned individual, but hasn't had any specific training and wouldn't be able to hack any difficult encryptions.

Weaknesses: Hakkai's eyesight is poor. Even before he lost his eye, he wore glasses, and while his replacement eye gives him depth perception, he's still nearly blind in his right eye. The form of chi manipulation Hakkai practices pulls directly from his own chi reserves, and while battles leave him moderately fatigued, the task of healing another person from moderate-to-serious injuries exhausts him to a great degree.

History: Hakkai, born Cho Gonou, was raised in the Badlands. The majority of his childhood was spent in an orphanage after being abandoned by his parents. He was a quiet, studious loner, who held a certain contempt for those around him. This aloofness did not change as he got older, and it seemed that no one would ever get close to him, until by chance he was reunited with his sister, Kanan. The relationship between the two was intense, and eventually evolved into an incestuous romance. The two moved to a small village in the Badlands, near the ghost town of Antrim. Hakkai took a job as a school teacher, and the two took pains to conceal the fact that they were, in fact siblings from the townspeople.

The life the two enjoyed was simple but happy until towns in the area began to fall prey to a clan of demihumans living in the foothills of the Talexhia mountain range. The demihumans, lead by Hyakugan Maou, were kidnapping young women from the towns, and when they came to the village in which the Cho siblings were living, the townspeople decided to offer up Kanan as a sacrifice, rather than let any of their wives or daughters be taken. Gonou was away at the school teaching at the time, and when he returned home, he learned the awful truth of what had transpired. Something inside the seemingly friendly young man snapped, and he killed those responsible for handing Kanan over, vowing that he would go and rescue her.

Good to his word, Gonou eventually tracked the clan of demihumans to their home and began killing his way through their ranks, searching for his sister. After considerable slaughter, he finally found her in a dungeon and set about trying to free her. In the process, Kanan stole the knife he had armed himself with, and stating that she was pregnant with Hyakugan Maou's child, and had no desire to give birth to a monster, killed herself. This was tragic in and of itself, but unbeknownst to Gonou, there was a curse on Hyakugan Maou's clan, and when the final member of the household attacked, and was subsequently killed by Gonou, the curse was transfered to him, turning him into a demihuman. Gonou did not escape the last fight unscathed, however, being nearly eviscerated by his opponent. He stumbled out of Hyakugan Maou's castle before collapsing in the middle of a nearby road. He might have died there, had it not been for a local gambler who found him and took him in, allowing him to recuperate without once asking how Gonou had ended up in such a state.

Shortly there after, the local law and religious advisers sent two of their envoys to capture the mass murderer Cho Gonou so that he could be tried for his crimes. Gonou tried to flee, but a short distance from the home where he had been staying, he was confronted by a surviving relative of the clan that he had killed. The man desired retribution, and Gonou, caring little for his own survival, tore out his own right eye as an act of contrition. He would have done the same with the left, but he was stopped at the last moment, and deciding to live, whatever the consequences, Gonou fought back against the demihuman, killing him.

He was subsequently taken in to be tried by the local authorities. Because the religious code of the region forbade the handing down of a death sentence, and given the circumstances surrounding Gonou's crimes, the decision was that he would be allowed to go free, on the condition that he cast aside his old name and choose a new one. Thus, Cho Gonou became Cho Hakkai. Hakkai stayed for awhile with his newly made friend, but deciding he no longer wanted to impose on the young man, set out to seek employment on one of the many airships that traveled through the region.

SAMPLES-
Third Person (roleplay):
It was possible he'd gone a bit overboard, but it had been a long time since Hakkai had found himself in a town this large, and the chance to peruse the available goods had been irresistible. Which explained was why he was currently standing before a tottering pile of books, inspecting the provenance of each in turn while awkwardly shifting a sack of oranges in one arm, all while the bored shopkeeper looked on.

"Let's see... yes. This stack will do, I think," he murmured to himself, setting aside a travel guide proclaiming the benefits of visiting Boston in the fall. He finished making a mental total, determining how large a hit to his admittedly small financial reserves the purchase would constitute before pushing the rest towards the shopkeeper who was giving him an odd look by this point. Hopefully, the acquisitions would be enough to last him until the next town and his next paycheck--and speaking of which... A quick glance at his watch confirmed that said paycheck would probably be a long time in coming if he didn't hurry.

"I don't suppose you know the way to the docks," he asked, scooping up the books which were now in a bag of their own. "I think I'm about to miss my ship."

The shopkeeper arched an eyebrow and simply shook his head a little. "Two blocks, a right, and then straight. Can't miss it."

"Thank you very much!" He called as he hurried back out onto the street, managing a wave goodbye around the bundles in his arms.

[Voice]

Pardon me a moment while I--ah, there we go. I'm not very familiar with these newer models. That aside, I've signed on as part of the crew, and it's my sincere hope that we'll all get along well.
