On Communication

I often find myself asked to explain "things" to people. "Things" can encompass any topic, but invariably the questioner will pick something that could not, in any universe, be explained to an inattentive listener over the clean-picked bones of the Christmas turkey. More or less popular than the time when, at a dinner party over winter break, I announced to my parents and their friends that if I were ever to have a limb removed, I'd like to eat it?

Being asked to explain is a compliment, so it's sad when the enquirer then turns away and turns into an insult. Happens to me regularly, also. If they are strangers, then you too can walk away, but when it's family, that's more difficult.
