Tattoos are good, and getting one that has such clear personal significance is even better. For what my opinion's worth, I say go for broke and put it wherever seems right, visible or not. If it does end up closing any doors for you (professionally or socially) and I can't imagine that happening (but I live in super-liberal Vermont), they're probably doors better left closed anyway.
