Taystee Diner, New Gotham, the lunch shift, Monday

Jan 19, 2015 13:55

Priestly had never worked at a place as large as this diner before. It was a bit of an adjustment -- especially when you factored in going from managing Luke's in Fandom to being a lowly peon here -- but he liked his coworkers well enough, no one tried to stick things in his hair, and there were even a few regulars he'd gotten to know working the ( Read more... )

"Priestly! Dahling." The regular came in bundled up in an extra scarf and gloves, and sighed in relief as she slumped against the counter. "Something warm and spicy and soothing today, please. Everyone's in an uproar with this wind, and the projects, and I need an excuse to stay away from them a little longer."

Priestly grinned at her. "One Mexican hot chocolate, coming right up, Ms. Queen." The chocolate pot was right by the coffee, so he didn't have to go far. "You know I'm always willing to provide an extra excuse or two."

"That is because you are adorable." She sat down with a sigh, unwinding her scarf a bit. "I respect my colleagues, but they can get so... obsessive. I swear they've completely forgotten how to have fun." 'Ms. Queen' reached for her mug. "And how is your Monday? Busy? Frantic? Frenetic?"

"It's a good thing they've got you around to remind them, huh?" Priestly said. "All of the above. I'd say it's looking up now, though."

"Just since the summer." Priestly was trying to work out a suave way to eat his chocolate lava cake without spilling chocolate goo all over his beard. Or maybe she'd be into that? No, that was dumb. Just 'cause she was on a date with a guy so much younger than her didn't mean she'd want him to look like he was five. "My best friend grew up here, and the university's got a great nutrition science program, so it seemed like a good fit, even with all the themed villainy." He shrugged and finally just broke his cake apart with his spoon. "How about you? You a native or a transplant?"

Really, he was just yummy! So completely trusting. Harley wondered if he knew about Dinah's little side projects.

"I've been here so long I feel like a native. Although I moved here just after I finished college, for an internship." She licked a drop of chocolate off her spoon. "New Gotham has so many exciting opportunities. And you can't say the villainy doesn't make life more -- vivid."

"Yeah, seems like I always end up somewhere, uh, vivid." Priestly shook his head. "Makes growing up in Santa Cruz seem boring. "You must be really good at dodging the weirder stuff by now, I guess. Any tips for the new guy?"
