The cheerful sound of the bell rang in the air, above the room's ever present chattering, as Light stepped through the door of the tiny cafe. Though he wasn't particularly a fan of the cafe's inhabitants, Light was quite fond of the design. The room was ensconced in rich browns and warm beiges. It was relaxing.
Keeping his gaze fixed and his back straight, Light made his way to the counter, not even glancing at the menu. He ordered the same thing every time.
After spending a moment playing the cheerful successful student and chatting it up with the girl at the desk, Light made his way to his usual corner, only to see that it was occupied.
Grumbling inwardly and letting his mouth drop into a hint of a scowl, he continued forward - undeterred.
It wasn't until he sat opposite the boy in his place that Light realized he was staring at a mirror image of himself.
Not trusting his voice, he said nothing, running through a million possibilities and waited to for...his eyes to raise and meet his gaze.
Raito had been looking towards the window, his mind transfixed on the unhappy couple sitting and talking in low, hushed voices. He committed the names he saw floating above their heads to memory, then directed his attention to the noise he had heard right in front of him.
What he saw left him gaping. The man in front of him looked exactly like him... except his clothes were much nicer looking than his own. He looked down at his baggy, messy attire and suddenly felt inferior.
Still, he couldn't let that get in the way. He smiled up brightly at his mirror image, extending a hand. "Hi! This is rather odd, isn't it?" He laughed, somewhat nervously. After all, it truly was bizarre to suddenly meet your clone. "My name is Yagami Raito, pleased to meet you!"
Light's eyes widened and in shock before narrowing suspiciously. Drawing a deep breath, he leveled a scrutinizing gaze on his 'twin' for lack of better word. "Ah," he said carefully, extending his own hand.
He half expected his hand to wisp through Raito's, but instead he felt warm skin, with the barest trace of a pulse pounding into his hand - confirming the reality of the situation.
"I'm..." Light paused, wondering what the consequences of giving his name to this person would be. If Raito had a Death Note too, as he almost suspected he did, he would easily be able to take care of Light.
He accepted the hand and shook it firmly. He had no thoughts of ghosts or hallucinations, as he was much more trusting of his senses than his clone was.
When he introduced himself, he tilted his head slightly. He had made the eyes deal with his Tenshi, which allowed him to see everyone's names and, if applicable, the name of their current affections. He saw only Light's name. He wondered why he would give a fake name, but decided to dismiss it, trusting that the man had a good reason for doing so.
"Hi, Sakohma-san," he responded cheerfully, "Do you have any ideas for why we look so similar? I can only think that we are long lost twins or something; if so, that'd be kinda cool, don't you think?"
Light wished he could converse with Ryuuk at that moment but he couldn't, not with Raito standing right there. If he'd been able to he'd have asked if the Tenshi could tell whether or not he was lying.
"Only when it's necessary," Light said, his tone soft and sad, as if he felt guilty. "I don't like using it though," he conceded, dropping his gaze shamefully.
"Necessary?" he asked, horrified, "What deaths would be necessary?" He trusted Light enough to believe that they were, in fact, necessary, especially since it was obvious that he didn't like doing it, but his mind still reeled at the concept.
"I'm walking down the street and I see a man with a gun aimed to an innocent woman's head," Light said, watching the other with sad eyes. "I know that one of them is going to die. If I don't intervene it's going to be the innocent woman. I know that I shouldn't make that choice, but why should an innocent woman die in the place of a murderer?"
He fiddled his hands before him nervously and shrugged. "I just have to think of what the alternative is. I was given this Note for a reason. If I don't believe that I think I'll go crazy..."
His eyes softened. He didn't approve of murder, of course not, but... when it was put like that, it sounded noble. He wasn't sure exactly what to feel about his actions, but he could definitely understand the feeling of being given the Note for a reason - after all, that's how he became a "Cupid" of sorts. He could figure out the moral dilemma later; at the moment, Light needed his support.
"I understand," he said, pulling him into a hug, hoping that he could help his "brother".

"Sakohma Ryuu," he eventually said evenly.
