You keep your benefits, you just can't use him to gain more benefits. Even with FLR, he will still have no recourse to public funds except for the use of the NHS. It's only after he has ILR that he would be able to claim any benefits or you would be able to use him as a member of your household to get more.

I just got my UK visa and had to fill out the financial form. You only have to met a income threshold by my understanding and this can be done through savings. It is only your partner who cannot go on the benefit (i believe) so if you have enough savings you should be okay...again they emphasise that each situation is different and they decide on a case by case base.
