Kibum logged off of Facebook with a grin. He had to thank Heechul one day for making him get a Facebook. He’d never really been into those social networking sites, but now he really liked going on Facebook everyday due to a certain middle school classmate of his named Lee Donghae.
He’d had a sort of crush on Donghae back in middle school. Practically all the girls (and a few guys) had a crush on Donghae at some point. It had been weird to have a crush on one of his friends but Kibum had never told anyone about it.
Donghae had been captain of the school’s dance team and a heartbreaker with his playful dark eyes and easy smile. They’d lost contact with each other when Kibum had moved away the summer before they started high school. He was happy to have reconnected with an old crush friend.
Kibum resisted the urge to log back onto Facebook and chat with Donghae more. He needed to go to sleep. It was his first day of his second semester at college tomorrow and he was excited.
***
Kibum scouted his first class of the day for a good seat. Picking a good seat was important to him. He wanted to sit in the front but not too close. He chose a sit in the third row close to the door.
He was happy to be back in school. There wasn’t much to do during the summer besides watching television and occasionally going out with his friends.
The first days of school were always the best. There was no homework and all the professors did was hand out the syllabus and talk about what the class was going to be about it. Kibum enjoyed the first few days the most because once things really got going in his classes, he studied every chance he got to keep his grades perfect. He had a scholarship to keep.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw someone take the seat next to him.
Kibum took out his notebook, wondering when the professor would arrive, when he felt a tap on his shoulder.
“Kibum?” a voice inquired.
Kibum looked over and got the surprise of his life -
Lee Donghae, his old classmate that he had been chatting with on Facebook, was sitting next to him.
***
The world was apparently smaller than Kibum thought it was. As it turned out Donghae knew his closest friend, Heechul, because they had been in the same art class during the fall semester. Donghae also knew quite a few of Kibum’s high school classmates from participating in various school activities. Kibum mused that Donghae’s popularity hadn’t diminished since middle school but had grown immensely.
The two of them were having lunch in the café, sitting in a booth by the large windows that overlooked the college’s back lawn. Donghae had suggested they have lunch together after class to catch up.
“It’s weird that we didn’t run into each other last semester,” Donghae said as he munched on a bag of potato chips. “I hung out with Heechul hyung sometimes. He said he had a friend he wanted me to meet. I guess that friend was you.” Donghae flashed a smile, his pearly whites shining in the sunlight.
“Um yeah.” Kibum felt his cheeks grow hot. He grabbed his sandwich and bit into it, praying Heechul didn’t come into the café during lunch today. If anyone knew himself better than he did, it was Heechul. No doubt his friend would notice the burn in Kibum’s cheeks.
“So what’s your major?” Kibum asked curiously.
“Economics.”
Kibum raised his eyebrows. “I wouldn’t have pegged you for a business major Hae.”
Donghae smiled at Kibum’s use of his nickname. “I want to do business, so I figured I’d major in the hardest one there is. “
“You just don’t look like a business major,” Kibum remarked as he looked over Donghae’s outfit, which consisted of a slightly paint splattered white shirt with a printed Koi fish on the front, dark jeans, and a pair of blue and orange sneakers. A pair of earphones dangled around his neck and a single silver bracelet glinted on his left arm.
“I know. “ Donghae grinned. “I often get mistaken for an art or music major.” He wiped his hands with a napkin before sticking a fork into his pasta bowl. “And what about you Kibum? I bet it’s something to do with science. You were always in the science labs when we were in middle school.”
Kibum blinked in surprise. He suddenly wanted to spazz or something because Donghae had remembered his love for science. He shrugged his shoulders hoping to appear nonchalant when he was really giddy inside. “I’m a biology major and chemistry minor.”
Donghae whistled. “I’m impressed.”
“Are you minoring in anything?” Kibum asked.
“Not right now. I’m thinking about minoring in art.” Donghae took a bite of his pasta. “As you know I took that art class last semester with Heechul. I thought I’d take advantage of our elective courses while I can.”
Kibum nodded in agreement. Since they were college freshmen they got to choose an elective to take along with the other courses they needed for their majors. He had taken first level Japanese last semester and was taking the second level this semester.
They finished lunch, reminiscing about middle school and how it didn’t seem so long ago that they had been just kids.
“Remember that one time we were late for school?” Kibum asked. “We jumped the wall. I made it, but you didn’t. Your backpack got stuck on the wall and you couldn’t pull it off.”
Donghae threw back his head and laughed. “And I pulled my backpack so hard that I fell off the wall?”
“Yes!” Kibum pointed at Donghae while trying not to laugh too loud. “Teacher Im scolded the both of us for being late.”
“Yep,” said Donghae. “I had a bruise on my bum after that fall Kibummie.”
“Aw poor Hae,” Kibum cooed. He reached across the table to pat Donghae’s outstretched hand. His fingers had just grazed Donghae’s, when he saw Heechul come through the café doors. Donghae looked towards his directed gaze. Kibum pulled his hand back and placed it in his lap. He looked at Donghae and shook his head hoping Donghae would understand his silent message.
Donghae didn’t get Kibum’s telepathic attempt to not call Heechul over.
“Heechul hyung, over here!” Donghae yelled.
Kibum stuck his tongue out at Donghae when he wasn’t looking. It was childish but he knew he’d probably feel like a child in a few minutes. Heechul was bound to either a) embarrass him or b) pester him with questions like his annoying aunts at Christmas.
He watched Heechul maneuver his way to their table with Hankyung and Siwon in tow. He plastered a smile on his face when Heechul squeezed into the booth next to him. Hankyung sat next to Heechul while Siwon settled down beside Donghae. Kibum sent a silent thank you prayer up to God. Heechul was a bit milder when he had their friends Hankyung and Siwon with him. He took a swig of his juice.
“Kibum, where have you been?” Heechul helped himself to Kibum’s uneaten cookie. “And why are your cheeks pink?”
Kibum nearly spit out his juice. He thought his blush had disappeared.
“We’ve been looking for you.” Heechul said as he nibbled on the cookie. “We looked in the library. You weren’t in your usual hiding place Bummie. “
Siwon cleared his throat. “Correction, I looked for you in the library.”
Heechul threw a piece of cookie at Siwon. “He didn’t need to know that.”
Siwon picked up the piece off the table and ate it. “Yeah and he also doesn’t need to know that you made Hankyung go into the student lounge to look for him too.”
Kibum stifled a laugh. “Thank you for looking for me Siwon hyung.”
Siwon smiled, his dimples showing. “No problem.”
Kibum leaned over slightly to catch Hankyung’s gaze. He said a silent thank you. Hankyung inclined his head. You’re welcome he mouthed back.
Heechul finished the cookie and dusted the crumbs off his hands. “So you’ve been in here all this time with Donghae.” Heechul waggled his eyebrows. “I didn’t know you knew him Kibum.”
Donghae leaned back against the booth cushions. “We were actually middle school classmates Hyung.”
“Really?” Heechul leaned forward, cupping his face in his hands like he was hearing a piece of juicy gossip.
“Yes Hyung,” Kibum replied. “We had lost touch but we reconnected through that Facebook you made me.”
Heechul was perceptive. He would remember Kibum’s comments about a certain middle school friend and make the connection. Kibum didn’t like the gleam he saw in Heechul’s eyes. Wary, he scooted closer to Heechul.
“That’s interesting. Kibum didn’t you tell me you had been talking to a middle school classmate and that you like - Oww!”
Kibum had pinched Heechul’s leg. Hard.
“What were you saying Heechul hyung?” Donghae asked.
Kibum rubbed the spot he’d pinched to let Heechul know that he’d pinch it again if his hyung replied.
“Hyung was just saying how happy I was to have gotten in touch with an old friend,” said Kibum.
“I feel the same Kibummie,” Donghae replied, smiling warmly.
Heechul looked from Donghae to Kibum and then at Siwon and Hankyung who had stayed quiet. He busted out laughing.
Hankyung placed a hand on Heechul’s back. “Why are you laughing? Are you okay?”
“Just because.” Heechul waved a hand. “I’m fine, I’m fine. “ He took a deep breath to try and stop laughing. “This is going to be one interesting semester for Kibum,” he snickered. His gaze traveled to Kibum and then to Donghae again and he promptly broke into a fit of giggles.
Siwon rolled his eyes. He understood why Heechul was laughing even if Hankyung didn’t. He felt a bit sorry for Kibum. He gestured for Hankyung to get out of the booth. Hankyung did and Siwon helped Heechul, who was still laughing, out of the booth.
“We should go to class,” Siwon said. “Kibum ah, see you later. It was nice seeing you again Donghae.” Siwon bowed politely like he always did and headed to the exit, half-dragging Heechul with Hankyung behind then.
Kibum scratched his head ruefully. “Sorry about Hyung. But I guess you know how he is right?”
“Yeah I do. Heechul hyung is weird but I like him a lot,” Donghae said.
Donghae picked up the remnants of his lunch and his messenger bag. Kibum did the same and the two of them emptied their trash into the bins.
Kibum tugged at his backpack straps. “So…I’ll chat with you tonight?”
“Of course!” Donghae replied.
Kibum felt relieved upon hearing Donghae’s words.
They did that stupid handshake they’d made up in middle school for the heck of it, laughing throughout the whole thing.
As they went separate ways, Kibum decided he’d never had a better lunch.
***
Kibum skimmed through his chemistry textbook as he lay on his bed. He had a lab the next day. School was in full swing and he was already back to his ‘study’ mode. Though even with all the studying he did, he made it a point to chat with Donghae every night and not spend so much time in the library at school.
He also went out with Heechul to parties and mixers. Donghae was usually always present. Kibum stuck to Donghae’s side at the parties because Heechul would always leave him alone by running off with either Hankyung or Siwon, sometimes even both.
The first time he’d gone to a party and stayed by Donghae’s side, Kibum had thought Donghae would leave him to socialize and dance with other people being the social butterfly he was. But Donghae surprised him by actually staying with him the whole night, just talking and drinking.
And when Donghae didn’t leave him the second time, the third time, and even the fourth time, Kibum fell just a little bit more in love because Donghae had stayed when he easily could’ve ditched him. It was through those moments that Kibum realized his feelings for Donghae were changing rapidly. It definitely wasn’t like the feelings he had in middle school. He was more aware of himself and Donghae when they were together or just talking.
DING!
Kibum looked up from his book to his laptop screen with a knowing smile. He had a message from Donghae. He put down his book and pulled his laptop closer to him.
Donghae :
Hey :)
Kibum:
Hi~
Donghae:
So I was wondering…did you want to go to the movies? I’ve been wanting to see UP.
Kibum:
Um yes?
Donghae:
Okay cool. We can go with Heechul hyung, Hankyung hyung, and Siwon hyung. I was thinking Sungmin and Eunhyuk could come too. They might bring their boyfriends. You met them at that party last weekend?
Kibum:
Junsu and Kyuhyun right?
Donghae:
Right.
Kibum:
When did you want to go?
Donghae:
Tomorrow at 3. Is that okay with you?
Kibum:
Yeah. I finish class before then.
Donghae:
What’s your number? Just in case I need to call you.
Kibum:
013-1015-1986
What’s yours?
Donghae:
Hold up.
Kibum ‘s phone went off alerting him that he had a text message. He moved to grab it off his nightstand. Here now you have my number ;) - Hae
Kibum:
Haha nice.
Donghae:
Keke. So want to meet at the food court tomorrow? You know which theaters right?
Kibum:
Yeah. See you tomorrow then? I have to get back to looking over my chem book >:(
Donghae:
Okay, I’ll let you go. Byebye.
Kibum:
Bye.
Kibum closed Facebook. He stared at his textbook for about five seconds before getting up and jumping on his bed like a little kid. He had one thing to look forward to after his lab.
***
Kibum fiddled with the straw in his drink. It was 3 o’clock and no one was there to meet him yet. He looked at himself in the mirror ceiling of the food court. He’d taken extra care with his appearance, wearing black jeans, a black tank top, a silver jacket, and a simple necklace. He ran his fingers through his hair. He’d even put gel in it, which was something he never did.
His phone vibrated in his pocket. Kibum took it out and was surprised to see a text message from Heechul.
want to hang? hankyung and siwon are coming over to my house to play poker. strip poker.
Kibum stared at his screen in confusion.
i thought you, hankyung hyung, and siwon hyung were coming to the moves with donghae and me?
donghae didn’t say anything to me.
oh my god, Kibum texted back.
wait. WAIT! ARE YOU GOING TO THE MOVIES WITH DONGHAE ALONE?!
no? donghae said he was going to invite sungmin and eunhyuk along with their boyfriends.
>:( you should be going with him alone.
not this time hyung. i’ll text you later. have fun making hankyung hyung and siwon hyung take their clothes off, Kibum replied.
you know it ;)
Kibum laughed. He was sure Heechul was probably babbling to Hankyung and Siwon about him going to the movies with Donghae. He’d never officially told Heechul about his feelings for Donghae, but he knew Heechul had figured it out that first day of school. Without having to say anything, Heechul always knew what was going on with Kibum because they were that close and Heechul just seemed to know everything even if you didn’t know it yourself.
Kibum checked his phone’s clock. It was 3:10. He flipped his phone open, finding Donghae’s number. He was about to press ‘send’ when Donghae’s name flashed across his screen.
i’m on my way. sorry for making you wait. there’s been a slight change of plans.
Kibum wondered what had changed. He finished his drink and tossed it in the trash can. Donghae came a few minutes later. A coil of nervousness wrapped tight in his stomach when he realized neither Eunhyuk and Sungmin, nor their other halves were with Donghae.
Kibum stood up to approach Donghae who had stopped by the movie theater entrance. “Where’s everyone else?” he asked.
Donghae smiled sheepishly. “I called Eunhyuk to come but he said he and Junsu are busy. So are Kyuhyun and Sungmin.” He peeked around Kibum. “Where are Heechul hyung, Hankyung hyung, and Siwon hyung?”
“I thought you were going to call them,” Kibum said. He watched as realization dawned on Donghae’s boyish features.
“My bad I guess I didn't make myself clear. I forgot to ask you to call them,” said Donghae. “I’ll pay for the tickets since I made you wait okay?”
“No-“ Kibum replied, but Donghae was already bounding off to the ticket window.
Kibum whipped his cellphone out to text Heechul.
HYUNG OMG I AM GOING TO THE MOVIES WITH DONGHAE ALONE. EUNHYUK AND SUNGMIN ARE BUSY.
srsly?! lol that is awesome kibum. you have a chance now :P
shut up hyung. what do i do?
what do you mean what do you do? buy one bag of popcorn, get a drink with one straw, leave your arm on the hand rest. all the normal movie date shit.
Kibum sighed. Heechul was his closest friend yet he wasn’t the best person to ask for advice. i’ll talk to you later. Bye, he texted back.
kibummie hwaiting!
Kibum was about to reply to Heechul when a pair of tickets were waved in front of his face. Donghae stood in front of him grinning. “Ready?”
“Yeah,” Kibum replied.
“By the way you look really good,” Donghae commented. His eyes glazed over Kibum’s outfit.
Kibum blushed. He’d hope Donghae would notice. He followed Donghae into the theater. They got popcorn and drinks at the concession. Kibum had tried to pay for his own drink but Donghae had swatted his hand away and paid for everything instead.
He wondered if this was a date? Donghae had paid for everything. Kibum decided to chalk it up to the fact that Donghae was a really nice guy and was sorry about not calling everyone to make proper plans. Still Kibum couldn’t help but wonder…
As the previews rolled, they got seats at the back of the theater. Once seated Kibum realized they were surrounded by little kids with their parents.
“You do realize we are probably the biggest kids here?” Kibum said. He was highly amused by this.
Donghae threw some popcorn in the air and caught it in his mouth. “I know,” he replied. “Isn’t it great?”
Kibum nodded, his eyes crinkling as he smiled. The movie started and Kibum found himself enjoying it even though he felt a little awkward since they were supposed to be watching it with seven other peoplee. Still he could tell Donghae enjoyed it too by the way his eyes lit up and the fact that he was constantly smiling or laughing. While he hadn’t followed Heechul’s advice, he did leave his hand lying upward in between his and Donghae’s seat. When Donghae didn’t try anything by the middle of the movie, Kibum tried to squish down the tiny bit of disappointment in his chest.
It wasn’t a date after all.
***
Kibum looked over the top of his history textbook at Donghae, who had come over his house to study. He’d been shocked when Donghae had called him and asked to come over.
(“I’m jealous of your good study habits,” Donghae had claimed at Kibum’s front door.)
Donghae was sitting at his desk, while Kibum was on his bed, leaning against the headboard with his book in hand. He didn’t think his study habits were anything to be jealous of, but really all he could think about was the fact that Donghae was in his room.
Kibum rubbed his eyes and yawned. Donghae looked back and pushed away from Kibum’s desk. “Sleepy?” He scooted the chair close to the foot of Kibum’s bed.
“Mhm. History is boring,” Kibum said as he closed his eyes. “My head hurts from all the reading I did.” He rubbed his temples.
“Lie down.”
Kibum’s eyes shot open. “What?!”
Donghae patted Kibum’s bed. “Lie down. I’ll massage your head for you. It’ll help alleviate your headache.”
Kibum wasn’t too keen about letting Donghae touch him, but his head did hurt. He lay down, his feet almost touching his headboard. Donghae adjusted his position at the foot of Kibum’s bed and leaned over slightly. He looked into Kibum’s eyes.
“Relax,” Donghae said as he began making circling motions with his hands on Kibum’s temples. “Think of something you like or really want.”
Kibum began to doze off, thinking the one thing he really liked and wanted was rubbing his head right now.
***
“Kibum. Kibum.”
Kibum cracked an eye open. Donghae’s face was upside down in his vision and he was smiling warmly like on their first day of school.
Without thinking, Kibum reached up and pulled Donghae’s head down and kissed him. Kibum suddenly thought Spiderman kiss as he felt Donghae’s tongue press against the seam of his lips. Kibum opened his mouth and Donghae shifted for better access, placing his hands on Kibum’s cheeks. The kiss was hot, all tongue and open-mouthed and better than anything Kibum had ever dreamed of. Donghae’s hands were ghosting down his chest when he muttered against Kibum’s lips “my neck hurts.”
Oh! Kibum thought. They were in an awkward position. He promptly let go of Donghae’s head and sat up.
“I’ve always wanted to try to kiss someone like that,” Donghae said clearly amused as he rubbed his neck.
“I-I like you Donghae,” Kibum blurted out. It felt good to finally say it out loud.
Before he could even say anything else, Donghae pounced onto him and Kibum fell back on his bed with a ompf.
“Let’s do this properly shall we? I’ve wanted to kiss you since that day we went to the movies,” Donghae said.
Kibum gasped in surprise. Donghae beamed and pressed his mouth to Kibum’s. As his hands trailed over Kibum’s chest, Donghae lifted his head slightly to look at Kibum. “And for the record, I like you too.”
