I think I want to get Mike a camera for Christmas. He likes film and hates the delay shutter speed on your typical digital point and shoots. I like digital because I like being able to upload to the computer. I think he would like a "film style" camera that is digital but would also be stoked on a film camera. How about a used 20d? Buy a body only and then get a 50mm 1.8 to go with it.

I enjoy my Canon Rebel XTi, I think an XSi just came out recently. If you get the kit it comes with a telephoto lens as well as a typical starter lens.

I don't know a lot about cameras so I don't know how it compares to Canon, but I can bring guests to the Sony store in the U village and get the employee discount - the A230L is in your price range. Apparently Sony DSLRs are compatible with old Minolta autofocus lenses (http://photo.net/equipment/sony/), though I imagine Canon is a better bet for finding used lenses.

go for the DSLR, shoots like film but digital images.
