Pumpkin Patch When she was six, Sally followed Linus out to the pumpkin patch, watching his blanket flap in the cold breeze. She pulled her pretty pink coat tighter around herself and pulled her pigtails out so her hair could fall down around her ears and keep them warm.
"You're waiting for the Great Pumpkin, aren't you?"
Linus seemed to take a giant breath before he turned to look at her, his expression wary. "So?"
"So...can I wait with you?"
His mouth dropped open with surprise. "...You...believe me?"
Sally nodded firmly and moved to stand behind him. "Of course I do, my sweet Babboo. If you say there's a Great Pumpkin, there must be one."
She saw him look around for a moment, then down at her, and when a small smile crossed his face, she smiled back at him. Sally hoped he was impressed with her missing teeth.
"Yeah...you can wait with me. Just don't talk too much. I think it scares him away."
As she sat on top of a pumpkin, shivering, she talked entirely too much throughout the night. And, after a while, Linus came over and shared his blanket.

When she was twelve, Sally followed Linus out to the pumpkin patch. She knew his blanket was hidden inside his dark brown jacket. Watching his hair ruffle in the breeze, she moved over to stand beside him.
"What are you doing here?"
Her hair bounced around her face, the carefully made curls getting in her eyes. "It's Halloween, Babboo. I always come out to see the Great Pumpkin with you."
"You have never believed in the Great Pumpkin, Sally," Linus said with the smirk he was beginning to perfect..sort-of.
Sally sighed and edged closer to him, trying to borrow some of his warmth. "I've always believed in you, Babboo."
Linus hesitated a moment, but finally put an arm around her shoulders and rubbed on the arm of her pale pink jacket. "Whatever."

When she was seventeen, Sally followed Linus out to the pumpkin patch. He moved over to her and placed a blanket he'd brought around her shoulders, then pulled her into his arms.
"You're going to freeze, Sal." The tone of his voice was caring, and his eyes were concerned.
"I haven't yet," she replied.
Leaning over, he placed a kiss on her nose. "Why do we still come out here?"
Laughing, Sally wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his shoulder. "Because you're Linus and I'm Sally, and it wouldn't be Halloween if we didn't."
Linus seemed to accept this, and he held her as they waited in the cold breeze.

She was twenty-nine now, and she walked alone to the pumpkin patch. She looked around fondly, although there were no pumpkins out yet. It was the middle of April and all she could see was dirt, and tiny sprigs of green here and there.
"I don't know if you're there," she said to the Great Pumpkin. "As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I've always been right and there is no Great Pumpkin, but I'm grateful for you, all the same." She took a deep breath and looked over near the gate, where she would be walking out in her beautiful pink wedding dress on Halloween. "For a long time, Halloween was the only night he was happy to see me," she admitted to the open field, "and that was because of you. So...I thought you should know that he finally asked me to marry him and, of course, I said yes."
A cool Spring breeze ruffled her curled hair and she grinned. "We're going to be married here, and I'm going to love him for the rest of my life."
As she walked away, she smiled and pulled the edges of her stylish pink sweater just a bit closer.
