The next thing Gilbert would hear was string of swears in German and keeys clattering to the ground, and the next thing he would see was Ludwig braced against the doorframe, his blue eyes wide. His broad chest heaved, indicating that the sight of his brother pointing a gun between his eyes had... not been exactly what he'd been expecting to come home.

"Jesus Christ, Gilbert! What's going on?!"

And then there was a very familiar, very shocked man standing in front of him. He didn't lower the gun.

"Did you just get home? Because, if you did, someone else was in the house."

He stood there in his clothes from last night, smelling like a bar, waiting for an answer, and trembling slightly.

"Of course I just got home!" Ludwig sputtered, albeit defensively as he gripped the doorframe. The wood creaked dangerously in his grasp. It might crack if he tightened his hands anymore. "What does it look li-.... SOMEONE WAS IN THE HOUSE?!"

Ludwig's panic shifted from the gun his brother still had aimed at his head, to the man who held the gun. "Oh my god, Gilbert! Are you okay?" Like metal to a magnet, Ludwig darted to his brother, and inspected him carefully. So help him, if Gilbert had a scratch... "How did they get in? Why didn't the dogs alert you? Much less attack... Why was the back door unlocked?!"

When Ludwig rushed over to him, Gilbert realized he was aiming at an empty doorway and lowered the gun.

"I'm fine, Bruder. You worry too much. I don't know how they got in. I was sleeping. I never saw anyone. The dogs barked a few times but they stopped and I figured it was just you getting home. It seems like whoever was here left treats for them."

He tried to shake his baby brother off. Gilbert was tempted to shoot him in the foot for being such a mother hen.

"And, if the backdoor was unlocked, it was your doing. I was asleep before you left for work and haven't gotten up since."

The rush of adrenaline had begun to leave his system and Gilbert felt himself grow tired once again. He leaned into Ludwig's stronger frame and yawned.

"Can I go back to bed now?"
