Hunger Games

SPOILERS for the end of the Hunger Games trilogy. And caution for my own rambling, still-raw and processing thoughts.

Into the burning ring of fire. )

Oh, and I also saw some talk about gender roles in the HG much earlier on my twitter feed, and I'd love to talk about that, also!

It was a little more a how fandom treats female characters vs. male characters, which I think applies a little more generally, but there are some REALLY good points in a lot of the comments, both about general fandom tendencies and about the actual characters. I don't really agree with some of her examples (...I really don't think you can compare Cinna to Effie in terms of being interesting, but it's subjective). The post is here, by the way: http://liliaeth.livejournal.com/383967.html

What did you think of the Finnick objectification, by the way? I saw a few points earlier about how Finnick and Johanna are both paraded around naked in the Quarter Quell, but the way Finnick's treated is much more similar to how our society reacts to female ~sexiness, and I thought that was interesting.

I think that with Prim the point is that there isn't really one, almost? The whole thing is senseless death. Hundreds of kids died for no good reasons for years and years and I kind of think some of the deaths are just to drive home that "hey, senseless death happens." Finnick, for example- his death served NO purpose except to make me weep. But he dies, because people die, in Panem/the Games/the war. With Prim it's even worse, technically, because like you said, Katniss was trying to save her, that started the whole thing, and in the end, they ~won, but Prim wasn't safe. Lol maybe that's a really depressing ( ... )

Oooh yeah, I see what you and Tina mean about role reversals! I hadn't really considered how Katniss filled a role that we would see as masculine and Peeta had the more feminine role. But they are at the very least challenging us, even if they aren't challenging the people of Panem.

It IS really depressing! It seemed so undignified for Finnick to die in the sewers at the hands of the mutts, especially when he had survived two Games and had a mental breakdown. Surely he would have been more capable than many of the others who outlived him? But, like you said, it is supposed to be senseless death anyways.

And definitely! But it's not even a COMPLETE reversal, like KATNISS=MALE ROLE PEETA=FEMALE ROLE. Because they both have traits from both ends of the spectrum, which I think is really cool. And there's a huge lack of boy/girl tribute divide, which I think is cool too.

You know what the worst part of Finnick's death is? He got decapitated, by the mutts. (WHICH BTW ARE LIZARDS. MY BIGGEST FEAR. FML.) Annie, when she went crazy, it was because she saw her district partner decapitated. And I fucking HATE the throwaway line, about their baby. Like. You can't kill him and then throw that in there!

I don't know. I saw Prim's death as...the reason why Katniss went into the Games in the first place was for Prim. It kind of highlighted the pointlessness of the violence/complete ruthlessness. I still haven't really processed Coin's motivation there (I still need to read it again) but I think in terms of the book's purpose, it just drew more parallels between what Snow and Coin and both governments were capable of.

Ugh, but I was devastated. Between Prim and FINNICK and Cinna. Ugh.

(yes yes yes plz on the Johanna/Katniss. I haven't seen any, but I have seen a few people hint toward Johanna/Annie.)

seriously prim put me over the fucking edge. i KNEW she was gonna kill off a ton of people, but SHIT. finnick and cinna were enough for me.

Oooo, Johanna/Annie might make sense considering the antagonism between Finnick and Johanna. That was never really explained, was it?

Yes I saw you link to this, I love it! I hope they don't fuck them up Golden Compass style.

Actually just thinking about it, Katniss reminds me a lot of the character Lyra from the Golden Compass.
