It was late and had been a long day and disturbing case. Bernard, Lupo, Connie, and Mike were out at a bar sitting where they had been sitting for hours. The case was awful and upsetting. The crime scene was bad, the suspects were bad, and the verdict was bad. And all added up it made for four very depressed public servants. Mike stood up and said he was going back to the DAs office to work on other cases; it was his way of coping. He said goodnight to his weary friends and left. The rest of them sat there talking and drinking for about another hour before Kevin's girl friend called him and told him it was time to go. Connie turned and looked at a very quiet and depressed Lupo. He was looking down into his drink as if expecting the answer to everything to come out of his beer and hit him in the head. She lent down into his view and smiled at him; he smiled a half way smile and did a waving gesture with his hand.
"You know, it’s not the end of the world." she said softly
The only response from him was a slight nod.
She stood up and walked behind him. She placed her hands on his shoulders.
"Ok, I think you have had enough beer." she said
He looked up at her with a confused expression
"You’ve had as much as me."
"Yeah but I'm just a dumb drunk you though are a depressed drunk."
He just rolled his eyes and he got up and grabbed their coats.
"Split a cab?"
"Sure"
They were walking around looking for a cab when the conversation turned to the case. After a half hour they both realized that they had not even been looking for a cab. Soon all thought of the case and the disappointment were gone. They were walking in the general direction of Lupo's apartment and seemed to silently agree to walk. They walked till the cold got to them and they hailed a cab. When they got in Lupo took out his money to count and saw that he had no cash on him he glanced at Connie who also was realizing she was pretty much out of money. So they went as far as they could afford.
"Ok your turn."
"Ha-ha no, I’m done with this game."
"Oh come on Lupo!" she hit him.
"Fine! Fine!" he laughed and dogged her blow. "Ok well... when I was in high school I got in some trouble for shop lifting."
"Shop lifting what?"
He shook his head.
"Oh please I told you about when I super glued my brother’s head to his pillow!"
"Cigars"
"Ha! For you?"
"No for my mother, of course for me my friends wanted me to so I did and was caught a few days later. I tried one smoke and hated it. First and last time."
"Wow and you became a cop?"
"Ok it was a one time thing I never have done anything like it since. Well... not really."
"That’s my place." Connie pointed.
They walked up the steps in relative silence. She got to her door and paused. And turned to look up at him.
"Thanks."
"No problem." he started to turn away when she caught his arm.
"Wait let me get you some cash, so you can take a cab."
He started to protest
“Hey you can pay me back."
He followed behind into her doorway.
"Shut the door its cold."
And he did, he stood in the doorway not sure what to do or say, so he just stood there. She was back before he could think of anything to say.
"Here" she handed him a few bills. "Should be enough."
He was about to turn around and open the door when he paused and felt that her hand had not left his. He looked down at their hands which were now intertwined. Before he could make another move she grabbed his other hand. She was about to say something when he swooped down and kissed her. They stood there and kissed for what felt like a long time. The rest of the night was spent at Connie’s place.
The sun was shining in on Cyrus and Connie. They were huddled together in the blankets. Cyrus was awakened by the light. At first he was confused and did not know where he was, till he felt Connie’s slender arms around him. Her head was resting on his chest a small smile on her face. He looked down at her and smiled. He looked over at the clock and noticed it was 9:00 it was late. He was having lunch at his moms place at 12 and Otto needed to be fed. But when he looked down at Connie he did not want to wake her, she looked so peaceful. As he was trying to figure out a way to wake her she did on her own. Her eyes opened sleepily and she looked at him smiled and stretched.
“It’s nine.” He said
“Oh damn. I don’t want to get up.”
“Same here.”
“Then let’s just stay.”
Within an hour they were up and were feeling their hang overs.
“We really need to talk.” Connie said as she applied her makeup.
He wrapped his arms around her from behind and looked at their reflection in the mirror.
“Tonight?”
“Yes”
“My place? Your place? Or out?”
“Well let’s go to your place.”
“Sounds good. I got to go.”
At 5:00 Connie headed to Cyrus’ apartment. She thought about how this would work out. All day she was trying to find a way to make this work. There would be obvious problems at work. Awkward conversations, and all that. She wondered if Mike and Jack would disapprove she pictured Jack saying that it’s a conflict of interest. As she pulled into a parking garage her cell rang and it was Cyrus. She pulled into a spot and answered her phone.
“I’m here.” She said as she picked up the phone
“Well hello to you too. Do you want me to meet you in the lobby?”
They rode up the elevator together talking about their day. When they were sitting in his kitchen eating a McDonalds dinner they started talking about what to do.
“Well is this something or not?” asked Connie
He looked up from his food “I what something?”
“Me and you.”
“Yes, I mean if you want it to be, sure.”
She just smiled at him. “What will we do at work?”
“Work.”
“Smart ass.”
“Well no one needs to know.”
“A secret?”
“Yeah, sexy huh?”
She giggled and took a sip of her Coke.
