Thread fights?

I've been posting on Facebook a lot of stuff about marriage equality in New York. I've seen some of my liberal friends posting links and comments on it. But I have a ton of conservative facebook friends from NY (grew up with them), and they aren't posting a peep. I'm wondering why. I wonder if they ( Read more... )

The conservatives that I've discussed this with have largely said "don't care, people should be allowed this freedom". Even those who claim to be "very" conservative. That said, the conservatives I have talked to are mostly fiscal conservatives. Not religious conservatives.

Now, before "having a discussion with a conservative", I typically vet said conservative for a capacity and desire to have an "discussion". I have yet to hear an argument against gay marriage that can be defended without resorting to dogma and hate. Those who would like to convince me about a point using dogma and hate are typically not interested in having a "discussion".

I think I secretly, shamefully wished to see some old fashioned religious people get bent out of shape on facebook. But they seem to be wisely keeping their laments to a sympathetic audience. At some point in the future, the ones who didn't die off will have "evolving" views on gay marriage, I expect.

I have some conservative family members, but they pretty much block me from most of their facebook posts. :)

My most conservative family members seem to have decided not to engage me on political topics where they disagree with me.

I just decided to not post to my brother's facebook, "Don't like gay marriage? Don't have one". I may say that to him in person though. It seems a touchy thing to get into online.
I'm excited and a proud New Yorker!

I let loose on my brother recently via Facebook, when he gloated about playing the commodities market for his own profit. He's coming home from Naples on Monday or Tuesday and I'm sure I'll see him soon, but I'm still angry with him.

It's hard to communicate effectively online sometimes.

:D

I want and don't want to get into a fight with my brother over this. I'm not going to say anything (on FB), his side just lost.
