Eighteenth Melody...
“I met her in the rehabilitation place in the hospital… that was when I got a bad injury on my hand…”
Ohno felt someone pat his shoulder twice, he turned his head as response and got a poke on his cheek, “It’s lunch time Satoshi-kun…”Ohno nodded and smiled at her as she positioned herself to sat beside him, “Ohhh… nice view…”
“Yes, I know… the only things I want at the moment are just my canvas and paint…”
She laughed freely, one of so many things that Ohno liked from the girl besides him, her laugh. “You will recover in some weeks, Satoshi-kun… and go back to school again. Ahhh~ how I want to enter that school as well…”
“Please do so, after you recover… we can hang out in the school…”
“My injuries somehow make it impossible…” she smiled her gaze darted to somewhere far. “What do you think about a pianist who is using toes instead of fingers?”
“Is it possible?” Ohno asked her back.
“I don’t know… doctor said I can’t play piano ever again… It was like my only dream was snatched away from me… For some reason I wish that I got bad injuries on my feet instead hands…” For a reason that probably all people would understand, Ohno wanted to hug the girl. “The only dream I have is to enter your school, be Aiba Masaki’s junior… and watching Jun from far… You know, although it will be hurting me to see Jun around but I won’t be as hurt as if I lost everything…”
“I will bring that Aiba Masaki here after I’m back to school, so he can encourage you…” Instead hugging her, Ohno chose to pat her head slowly.
“You are so kind, Satoshi-kun… I probably will pass out if I meet him in person!”
“Is he that great?”
“He is great!” she punched his arm playfully, “He was the one who made me serious think about my dream… Bet me Satoshi-kun, he will be famous in no time…” she laughed cheerfully again. “I suddenly want to eat ice cream…”
“Huh?” It was not the first time Ohno couldn’t follow her changing subject but he was still surprised every time she did anyway.
She stood up as she tugged Ohno’s arm around with her, “Let’s go out and buy ice cream!”
“What? But we can’t go outside!”
“Of course we can, if no one knows! Just get your ass off there! I want ice cream!” she glared to Ohno who stood up spontaneously.
In the end it wasn’t only go out to have a cone of ice cream but they wandered around the city, imitated how a boring employee walk looked like, followed a high school couple, took picture in the middle of the road, tried to enter a shop that sold weird stuff, scrambled a pair of socks with some housewife in department store, promised that they would sneak out again to see the sun rises, they did everything they wanted and decided that they would call it a day after eating ice creams. They sat in the corner of room as they finished their ice creams, sometimes she would laugh every time Ohno failed to eat his own ice cream using his left hand.
“Want me to feed you Satoshi-kun?” she laughed as she teased the older.
Ohno pouted his lips, “No, thank you!”
“Don’t be that grumpy-” suddenly she dropped her spoon as she gaped, her eyes grown bigger. “Aiba Masaki…”
Ohno followed her gaze and found a pretty guy standing up with two ice creams in his hands. He looked as if he definitely waited for someone. Ohno felt like he saw the guy before, maybe they ran into each other in university before. He turned back to the girl, “Mai-chan! Go talk to him!”
She nodded her head in determination like she just woke up from a dream as she stood up slowly, but suddenly she stopped as her hands clutched to the table tightly, when a guy appeared besides Aiba. “Jun…”
“Jun!” he handed the ice cream in his right hand to a good looking guy. “You made me look stupid to bring two ice creams for a long time…”
Jun giggled, “It’s not only looks, you are natural stup-”
“Shut up! Will you?!” Jun laughed again as he naturally put his hand on the guy waist. “You know you are dating a stupid guy then…” Aiba pouted.
“Yeah, I wonder how come I fell for such a guy…”
“You!” Aiba stamped his right foot, “No kiss for you for three days, mister!”
He glared to his lover and stomped out from the café as Jun followed him, “Oh c’mon, Masaki! Don’t use the same trick again and again!”
There were an awkward silence between the two patients, Ohno didn’t even dare to see Mai, he didn’t dare to check, he just didn’t understand how he must react. But suddenly Mai laughed, “So it’s Aiba-san… the one he loves… What’s better than Jun dating Aiba-san, ne Satoshi-kun…”
“If you think like that, why are you crying…?”
Ohno’s heart was torn into pieces when he saw the girl bit his lower lips as the tears started to flooded her face, “It’s the tears of happiness…”
“Don’t lie to me and don’t lie to yourself…”
She sat back on her chair as she continued to eat her ice cream, “He never showed that expression to me… he never loved me, no matter what I did… he never saw me, no matter how much I love him… It’s useless…” Ohno didn’t say anything, he wanted to hug her but he didn’t want her to hate him, so he just stood there and listened to her every sob. “Satoshi-kun…”
“Hm?”
Mai smiled to him but for Ohno it was no more than a fake hurtful smile, “My brother will get a major broken heart…”
Ohno woke up in the morning with his terrible feeling he brought since last night. But he decided he would be strong for Mai, he would be cheerful and entertain Mai today, like Mai always comforts him every day. He woke up early and walked slowly to her room, the hospital was still quiet, that the best condition for them to sneak out. He reached Mai’s room after successes to hide from two nurses; he knocked on the door slowly but got no answer.
He thought that Mai is still sleeping so he decided to wake her up, he opened the door slowly, “Sorry for intruding… Mai-chan… wake up… let’s see the sun rise…” he whispered slowly to the patient room but again there was no response. He slowly walked in and passed the bath room, Mai still lay in her bed, her eyes closed tightly. “Mai-chan…” Ohno called her again as he moved closer. But he startled when he saw her left hand clutching to scissors, a shocked yelp left Ohno’s lips when he saw the trail of blood that already drained in the floor. “MAI-CHAN!! MAI-CHAN!!!”
But her body was cold, her eyes never opened, her breath and heart beat already stopped, she never answered Ohno’s call anymore…
“I planned the revenge to Jun, because… because…” Ohno’s body fell to the floor, he covered his face in bowing position.
“He and Masaki are the reason why did she ended her life…” Nino continued, “That the things you thought, so you pretended to be our friends, because you didn’t want to kill Jun just like that but also made Masaki suffer…” Nino closed his lips tightly to stop him from asking about their relationship, that Ohno never loved him, that he just used him to get closer to Aiba.
“I… I knew that slowly I started to be honest with my feeling, I like Masaki and Jun, I saw how much they loved each other, I started to fall for Kazu… I cursed myself for enjoying my life at that time, kept reminding myself that Mai suffered because of you… That no matter how much I love you, our past would never change, Mai would never come back… and I have to make you pay…”
“Every time I woke up in the morning I wish that we never had a bad history, that we met as normal people without hate and grudge feeling… but I know, my wish would never come true… it’s our crossed destiny, if I never met Mai, I would never know you… but if I met Mai, I would have the grudge to destroy your life… I don’t know if I have to feel grateful or not…”
A drop of warm water fell to Nino’s hand, he lifted his head to see his taller best friend who eyeing Ohno. He clasped his lips tightly, Nino knew, Aiba was the one who would understand Ohno’s feeling the best. When you lost someone you loved sometimes you couldn’t even think something reasonable… No matter how much you blamed yourself, blamed other people, no matter how much you cried, they would never come back, so where should the pain be carried to?
Nino felt Aiba’s grip became tighter when he opened his trembling lips, “Sho…”
Ohno looked at him, “Sho loves you since he met you for the first time, Mai talked about it all the time. I met him after Mai’s funeral, I talked to him about everything, that I would kill you in revenge of Mai… Because I knew it would make Jun die slowly… but he begged me to spare you, he would do anything to exchange your life. He even made himself promise me to help me kill Jun. I got the part to be part of your group… to be insider and to know all plans you have…”
“But when the day came, he betrayed me and begged Jun to not go outside home…”
“What?” Nino gasped in shock.
“He met Jun and begged him to not go outside home, he told Jun everything, my plan, my intention, but Jun never believed him. He believed me…” He choked his own words as the sobs left his lips uncontrollably.
“He married you, I thought it was because of the guilty feeling he had… he did have that guilty feeling, but he did it because he loves you, and he doesn’t want me to harm you… he never trusted me…”
‘Are you serious about this? Do you realize that he was the one who dated Jun after Mai? That because Mai saw their date she ended her life??’
‘I know… but I can’t lie to my feelings, the longer I live with him the more I realize I love him… he through a lot because of us… he suffered a lot because of Jun’s death, isn’t it the time for us to stop? We knew the feeling of losing someone we loved the best and we just made another person feel the same… It’s hurtful, Ohno-kun… Our never ending grudge wouldn’t make any good, it would only hurt us more and hurt people we love more…’
‘Is this about Kazu now…? At least he is not the wrong person for me…’
‘I don’t want to hear you judging about the person I am supposed to fall for, I love him! Of course I love him for serious! Why can’t I? While you can love someone and he is not the wrong person for me! Our conversation is done!’
“I won’t ask for your forgiveness Masaki-kun, I know I never deserve it. I just want to end everything… It hurts you, me, it hurts everyone we love, it hurts me even more when I know I did unforgivable things to people I love… I want to stop that pain, the circle we made, even if it means I have to end my life by doing that, I’m ready…”

Aiba walked in a narrow tarnish footpath, the smell the hard aroma of cigarettes and alcohol filled his smells. He tried to ignore the dirty calls from a group of people who sat on the end of the road as he kept his pace until he reached a modest building, compared with all buildings that was definitely the best but it wasn’t included in ‘good’ place to live as well. Aiba walked slowly to the room number three, he took the deep breath -and regretted it soon because the weird smell filled his smelling- before he knocked the door. But no one opened it for him, he sighed, partly because he felt relieved. He caught a sound of steps come closer; he collected his mind and ready to leave that place right when he faced the owner’s steps. A guy clamping crutch on his arms stood up in front of him, devoted half of his weight to his walker.
A shock yelp left Aiba's lips, “Sho?”
