Yay! New caledonia is confirmed! Je suis tres tres enthousiaste! Ce sera sensationelle!

The Monash French Studies New Caledonia Study Abroad Program, a 6-point unit to be counted towards a minor or a major in French Studies, will be offered to interested students in the coming summer semester, subject to sufficient student interest. It is planned to take place between 18 November and 4 December 2008 (inclusive).

The program takes place at two levels: an intermediate group for students who have completed Monash French Studies 2-4 will work through one program of learning and assessment; an advanced group for students who have completed at least Monash French Studies 6 will complete another program. Both programs will be thematically based on the broad topic of New Caledonia as a rapidly evolving francophone society that is ethnically, culturally, socially and politically diverse: its history, the present issues it confronts and the perspectives before it.

The Program will include:

  • a 30 hour language acquisition program delivered over 7 working days by FLE-qualified staff at the CREIPAC in Nouméa;
  • a 9-night stay with a host family during the study period in Nouméa;
  • a 4-night stay with the Napoémien tribe in their valley rising behind Poindimié on the north-east coast of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia

Assessment will be based on

  • assessment by CREIPAC teaching staff in conjunction with Monash staff of student work, including an oral examination at the end of the Nouméa-based program;
  • a written assignment in French (intermediate level: stage diary and short research exercise; advanced level: 1500-word essay in French) to be completed on return to Melbourne and handed in by December 21.

The cost of the Program includes:
  • return economy airfare Melbourne-Sydney-Nouméa-Sydney-Melbourne (domestic flights with Qantas and international flights with Aircalin);
  • airport transfers in Nouméa;
  • all accommodation (hotel on arrival in and before departure from Nouméa; host family accommodation in Nouméa; accommodation with the Napoémien tribe);
  • most meals (students must look after their own lunch or dinner 8 occasions according to provisional program below - this may vary slightly) ;
  • tuition fees at CREIPAC (which means that this unit is not subject to student fees raised by the university for the Commonwealth Government);
  • transfers between Nouméa and Poindimié;
  • airline and airport taxes and levies;
  • New Caledonia service tax;
  • A full-day day excursion (either to the Phare Amédée or to the Île des Pins);

It does not include:
  • Passport or visa (not required for Australian passport holders, but may be required for other passport holders) costs;
  • Travel insurance (obligatory and available through the travel provider at $90 if sufficient numbers);
  • Some meals (see above);
  • Some bus fares from Creipac to central Nouméa when there is no afternoon class.
  • Personal expenses.

The cost per participant of the program is $3900 +/- 5% (bearing in mind possible changes in exchanges rates, airfares and other costs before they are locked in, and economies of scale that can be achieved).

This study program will provide students with opportunities to see different aspects of New Caledonian society and everyday life and to use French actively in varying situations and settings, from everyday life in European and Melanesian contexts to more formal situations (e.g. presentations and question-answer sessions- in the last program, the Minister for Education in the New Caledonian Government spent 90 minutes with advanced students). There will be time on some afternoons during the CREIPAC program, on weekends, during a one-day excursion from Nouméa and during the stay with the Napoémien to enjoy leisure activities.

Students should expect to find themselves in situations of rather less comfort than they are used to at home. Travel from Nouméa to Poindimié will be undertaken in the public bus that takes 5 - 6 hours to make its way up the west coast to Bourail, cross the central mountain chain to Houaïlou on the east coast and travel up the coast road to Poindimié. Utility vehicles from the Napoémien will come down from the valley to pick students up. Students need to “travel light” over these few days, taking only a backpack or carrybag with basic necessities and leaving suitcases or large bags in the hotel bagagerie. As guests of the Napoémien tribe, they will sleep on foam mattresses on the floor of the Napoémien church or the “maison commune”, share basic cold-water-only bathroom facilities and eat together in a simple iron-roofed, open-sided “dining hall” structure, enjoying the food that the people from the tribe prepare, including, on one occasion a traditional bougnat. Participants have to be prepared to make do with the accommodation provided. Hotel stays are in doubles and triples to keep cost to a minimum. The weather will be warm - up to 30-32 degrees - and humidity will be high. Air-conditioning is not usual in New Caledonia, energy costs in an island economy without oil resources tend to make it prohibitive.

Students can apply to Monash Abroad for a grant towards the cost of this Study Abroad Program.

Expressions of interest are called for immediately. Places are limited and will be granted to the first students to confirm their interest with a deposit of $500 by 29 August. Cost of this program is dependent on economies of scale: if the number of participants falls, the cost to each remaining participant rises. Therefore $300 of the deposit will be forfeited by withdrawing students unless a new participant comes forward. Participants should note that Airlines reserve the right to cancel seats for which payment has not been received from 45 days prior to departure and that deposits or advance payments are required for various services. Further payments will therefore be required as follows:
  • $1000 by September 15
  • $1000 by September 30
  • Balance by October 15

A question-and-answer information session on this program will held on Wed, 20.08.08 at 11.00am in 11/W218. If you cannot attend, please feel free to see me (W517) or to contact me about the program by email:
