I haven't had a soda in years now but I do remember the effort it took to give it up as it was such an innocent treat in the grand scheme of things... actually, I'm not convinced that it's bad for anyone in general it's just that in my case diet soda made me really hungry all the time so it had to go.
I think when it comes to fic and happy endings it's often a matter of the fandom and characters and how you feel about them. LoM, for instance, generated a whole lot more ambiguous, bittersweet and downright unhappy endings than most fandoms.

I agree that the context is a huge thing. But I do think I find it harder to be that way now than I found it before.
