"Squish" was not avoided. Nor the next day, as well.
Central-continental weather seems extreme to an islander (i.e. a Brit) who's always lived fairly near sea coasts. When it's hot, it's *really* hot. When it rains, it *really* rains -- like a monsoon. And the transition is in the order of 15 minutes, maybe less, seldom much more.
