I have always thought that the disparity between rich and poor would be the toughest thing about living in developing countries. I've spent some time in India, and I can never get over the extreme poverty
( ... )
i have heard that india is sooooooo hard to experience from that perspective.
the bananas are an excellent idea!
last weekend we ran into a mcdonalds to get happy meals for the kids. there was a woman outside of the building with a child... a baby i think... it kind of made me angry that she was using the child in this way. at least she wasn't having the child do it. and then i was just sad again... that helpless feeling.
anyway, experiencing something like this really puts my life in america into perspective! we have it so incredibly good!!! even when we struggle a bit, many of us still have it really good. (of course i'm generalizing here... there are also many who struggle in america) i think you probably know what i mean.
you know, i cried when i read how this woman got these children into public school. i love that you and your mil helped and spurred another on to give more... and i love the spirit of the woman who made it her mission to encourage these children and give them hope of more...
I think meeting with the Maadi Women's Guild is the perfect way to begin giving. Until you really get used to it and know more, you probably want to heed the advice you've been given.
Like you, I would have a desire to just hand it out. The caution though, is don't start something that might get out of hand; out of your control. Hold that can of worms at bay until you're more settled...
you are right... it could easily get out of control...
we'll find a way to help. to make a dent, however small... there are so many opportunities. we just have to find the ones that "fit" us best.
i've taken my camera by the empty lot several times, but i keep losing my nerve. i'm still nervous about offending someone. john reminded me to bring some LE (egptian pounds) along with me when i want to take photos. most people are happy to have their photo taken for 1 LE (about $0.17 US!!). one day i will surprise you with a photo of the "empty" lot!
and thank you for your unsolicited advice :0) it's good advice!
