IUGR is Intra-Uterine Growth Retardation/Restriction (we only use retardation at work).
Generally, it's caused by placental or umbilical insufficiency. Maternal hypertension can also lead to IUGR as well (but this would be one of the causes of the placental and umbilical insufficiencies). :)
Max was IUGR. He was born at 38 weeks weighing 4 pounds. His torso was much smaller for his age, while his head was normal size. So, he was classic IUGR.
I have a clotting disorder that affects placenta function and I was on heparin for my pg. Due to the IUGR, now they suspect an antibody as well (like what Phen has) that triggers in late pregnancy.
While I am a small person as well, I don't think that being small or 'not having enough room' causes IUGR. As Stephanee said, it is usually due to placental insufficiency.
IMO, Matthew sounds like he was perfectly fine, just a smaller baby. :-)
