Chess University League...

Played another game in this league last night. A chaotic start to the evening as I thought it would be a home match and turned up at the club. The venue had changed and there followed a mad pedal through snow and ice to St Catherines College. I've never heard of a chess game being stopped by the weather but this came close ( Read more... )

Heh, comes to the same conclusion I did back at college - the easiest way to improve my chess is to a) stop blundering and giving away pieces, b) notice when my opponent has blundered and c) learn a few general tricks (on the board and off).

The software he recommends, CT-ART 3.0, is neat. I've started using it and found it really speeds the 'board reading' process. It's almost a physical rush as combinations several moves deep leap out.

On the other hand, when I applied Nimzovitsch's ideas I found myself winning without effort and with fairly undeveloped tactic ability.
