Harry already knew that the island's sense of humour got particularly sick around Halloween, and he had been on his guard all day. He hadn't suffered the rude awakening he had last year, when he'd found his home beset by zombies, but he'd still been on the alert, ready for attack at any moment. It went without saying that he was smart enough to steer well clear of the patches of ominous fog that were drifting around the island
( ... )
The sudden cold hit her so hard she nearly forgot to breath and the pause was enough for the chains to pull her closer to the table.
She looked forward, struggling with Max against the chains, her eyes widening when some of the victims started resembling soldiers. Some were unfamilair, but she could still see Joe's face among them, and oh god, was Harry amoung them too?
One of the chains holding her right wrist finally broke and they started pulling on the other. The ground was no longer bloody, but covered in snow that resembled the dark purple gravel of Outworld.
"Harry!" She called out, praying that he was safe-that he wasn't one of the tortured. "Stay back!"
Harry struggled forward against the strong wind, trying not to gag at the smell of death it carried with it. He saw Sonya, chained to a tree stronger and sturdier than any of the shattered beeches outside Bastogne, and yelled out to her.
"It's okay, Sonya, I'm coming to get you!" he shouted. He'd be fine if he got to her, if he kept moving; he'd got his uniform and his equipment, his old training coming back to him by instinct. If only the shelling would stop and the trees would stop fucking bleeding...
Max was the first to respond, barking to let Harry know where they were. Unfortunately, it also meant that Sonya didn't have his leverage to help her break free and without even a long sleeved shirt, she had to keep moving to keep from freezing.
Harry's shouting also alerted the Emperor, who along with his other warriors didn't even notice the cold. He stood up from his great chair in the middle of the table and raised his right hand.
"Finish him." He didn't shout, but somehow his voice was able to be heard even over the sounds of artilery.
She couldn't look away even as she saw several Outworld Mutants, with their fangs and three foot blades projecting from their forearms, starting running towards him. Her struggles became stronger even as the chains seemed to pull her with more force, fear raising at the thought that she'd have to face the execution of yet another one of her friends.
Sonya yelled out, this time from anger as she kicked herself from the tree, the force enough to break off the chains' hold on her.
