As I Lay Dying (for justprompts)

'I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad

The dreams in which I'm dying

Are the best I've ever had'

There was blood in his eyes, but the distinct face of his father loomed above him. Anger was carved into his features, a blind rage in his eyes. Horatio winced as another kick connected to his ribs. And another. And another.

He tried to breathe but only ended up coughing blood. The edges of his vision blurred and began to darken. He rolled on his side, trying to crawl away. The woman screaming and the distinct sound of a gunshot didn't even register with him.

Hands grabbed him, turned him over and gently rubbed his face. "Horatio?" It was his mother. Even though he couldn't see her, he knew it was her. "You're gonna be alright, Horatio, just wait a little longer."

"Raymond." he coughed. "Where-"

"Callin' 911. Don't speak, just wait." Her voice was trembling and she started rocking back and forth. "Just wait."

Horatio closed his eyes...and noticed the ceiling fan above him. Instead of the hard tile floor of the kitchen, the mattress of his bed was soft and inviting underneath him.

For a moment, he smiled. Horatio liked to think that if he had died that day instead of his mother, everything would have been better. His mother would have survived an abusive husband. She would have lost one son, yes, but at least Raymond wouldn't be overshadowed by his older brother. And if that were the case, Raymond would never have felt the need to prove himself by switching to Narcotics.

It would have been perfect.

Immaculate.
