[Uhura is on the porch today, surrounded by what looks like the insides of an old-fashioned transistor radio. She is utterly absorbed in messing about with the various wires and metal bits - she's been so busy with these experiments lately that she's kind of missed the fact that an experiment is going on ( Read more... )

[Takato is wandering through town again, trying his best to ignore the various thought bubbles and to reign in his own imagination enough to stop broadcasting colorful images of half finished monsters of all kinds. It isn't really working. And so when he spots the woman working on something he decides to come over and find out about it.]

Good afternoon, Miss! Are you trying to invent something?

[Glancing up, she takes stock of the kid. ((At least, he looks like a kid. Things aren't always what they seem, here.))]

That would be giving me a lot more credit than I deserve. I'm just... working on some modifications.

[But I am a kid. Most of the time, I think? Am I still a kid when I'm Dukemon? I'm still me even then. And Guilmon is Guilmon. But we're something else too.

...I think I'm confusing myself.]

Modifications?

[She raises her eyebrows slightly, her next thoughts no longer in English.]

Yes. Pulling this apart and rebuilding it, so it works differently, or better.

[Emil has taken to sort of wandering past House 7 every so often - not that he's lonely or anything, of course not - and today happens to spot Uhura on the porch surrounded by some of the most confusing thought bubbles he's seen yet. He can't make heads or tails of them no matter how hard he tries.]

Um...

[Her thought breaks off mid-equation at the sound, and she gives Emil a slight smile. ((Glad it's Emil today.))]

Hey there. Keeping yourself busy?

Kind of, but it looks like you're keeping yourself a lot busier than I am.

Well, if you want to help, you can hold these for me, for a minute or two. [She holds up a jumble of wires for him.]

[Hey, Uhura! Uhura! Guess who one of your neighbors of like a month now sob is?]

Good afternoon, Uhura-san!

[It doesn't even cross her mind that being friends with a walking, talking skeleton is weird anymore. She just smiles brightly.]

Afternoon, Brook. Nice day, isn't it?

[That's because she's awesome]

Oh yes! Enjoying the fresh air while you work? [...on whatever that is]

Very much so.

Ever built a radio?

[He is getting the hang of this thought-bubble thing! He watches Uhura's like it's some kind of interesting slide presentation.]

Who are you trying to contact?

[She glances up, slightly wary. ((Oh boy.))]

Theoretically, anyone outside the barrier who might be listening. Eventually.

[He sits on the edge of the porch, and watches Uhura work.]

SELI project?

((Ahaha, I don't think he knows about the incident with Raph.))

((Fourth-walling, btw? It's canon that Don watches Star Trek.))

((Fourth-walling is always fine. She's been fourth-walled already anyway.))

I don't know what that is.

[Arumat will just study her thoughts for a few moments before he speaks up.]

It should be easy enough to encrypt messages with the technology we have now.

(It's primitive, but at least it's better than nothing.)

[She blinks. Oh, right, the thoughts. A sigh. Thoughts stay in her head for a reason, Malnosso.]

I'll admit, I'm used to more advanced methods, but I'm sure when the time comes I'll be able to come up with something.

Hopefully this is the start of a progression which will ultimately lead to even better technology.

Heh. Do you really believe they'd allow us to have more advanced technology? No prison guard would give their prisoners potential weapons that could be used against them.

They allowed us this, which, yes, could potentially be used as weapons against them. If we're clever enough.

((And we are clever enough.))
