In general the earliest anyone would get promoted to colonel would be about 19 years of service, but that is very rare. I think one of my classmates got selected this last year. It's normally between 20-24 years of service, at least for the Navy equivalent. I think the Marines run a little behind Navy as I recall the first congrats for promotion to LtCol coming a little later than the Navy equivalent of Commander. I think that's one of the reasons I loved Jean Grey in the original X-Men trilogy - they had cast someone in her mid-30s. It just makes me cringe to hear actresses talk about how all the roles dry up when they hit 35 (other than playing some 22 year old's mother) while you have many men in their mid-40s and beyond being cast as action heroes (RDJ, I'm looking at you, though I do think he is awesome and totally owns Tony Stark, and many of the other male Avengers are over 40 as well - though as awesome as Liam Neeson is, he's really getting too old to be the action hero)
