How to Suggest Programming for Lubricus

Apr 15, 2012 09:40

Lubricus is being organized by fans, for fans, so it's YOUR con. That means the programming is completely determined by the attendees, i.e. YOU!

On Wednesday, April 18, the programming suggestions post will go up here on the LJ and we'll start taking suggestions for sessions at the con. This post only contains the information you'll need beginning on April 18.

At Lubricus, we’ll have access to two classrooms and a Common Room for con activities. This means we can have two programming sessions going on at once, along with informal activities in the Common Room. In other words, there will be a LOT of cool stuff for you to do!

The first step in planning programming is for YOU to suggest sessions you'd like to see at the con. Even if you're not yet sure you'll be attending, you can suggest a session. (See below for a description of the types of sessions and the information we'll ask for when you post your suggestion. Go here to see last year's suggestions post and see what sorts of things were suggested last year.)

The suggestion post will be open for two weeks, starting April 18. After it closes, the programming committee will organize and consolidate the suggestions, and then we'll create a series of polls for voting. These will be posted on May 9. Registered con attendees will then have two weeks to vote for their favorite sessions. The programming committee will look at the results, and will create another set of polls if necessary. Moderators will be recruited. Schedules will be arranged. The final schedule will be posted by July 1.

NOTE: Anyone can suggest a session, whether they will attend the con or not, but only registered attendees will be able to vote for sessions.

There are basically three different types of sessions we can accommodate, and we anticipate each session being about an hour long (though this is flexible). For the purposes of this con, we'll define the types of sessions as follows:

Roundtable: A roundtable is a moderated large group discussion of a topic. This type of session should be led by a moderator, who will have prepared questions about the topic and will moderate the discussion by participants. Roundtables are a great format for squee sessions and discussion of general fandom topics. This type of session works very well at a small con!

Panel discussion: In a panel discussion, a pre-selected group of 3-5 people discuss a topic, with one person moderating. There is usually time left at the end of the panel for the audience to ask questions and discuss the topic further. Panel discussions are well-suited for topics that are either very specialized (and the panelists have some expertise that contributes to the discussion) or to compare, contrast, or smackdown different views of a topic (with each panelist representing a particular perspective).

Workshop: A workshop is a how-to session in which participants learn a skill or technique from an experienced presenter. Participants will usually be actively engaged in the session and may have opportunities for hands-on work that results in a craft or piece of art. Workshops are well-suited for sessions about crafting, art, cosplay, icon-making, vidding, and so on.

There may be other types of sessions that we haven't thought of. Feel free to suggest them!

Other (Possibly Frequently Asked) Questions and Answers:

Okay, I have an awesome idea for a session. What do I need to do?
When the programming suggestion post goes live on LJ on April 18, comment on the post with the following information:

Title: (Make it interesting -- often attendees will only have time to scan the titles)
Type of session: (roundtable, panel, workshop -- this will help us decide which room to put the session in, along with organizing the sessions for voting purposes)
Summary: (A few sentences that describe what the session will be about.)
Are you willing to mod? Yes or no: (If you won't be able to attend, say so here, so others can volunteer to mod this panel. Also, if you already know of someone who will co-mod with you, put their name here. If you are seeking a co-mod, also put that here.)

I'm not yet sure if I'll be attending. Can I still suggest a session?
Absolutely. The more ideas we have here, the better!

I won't be able to attend, but I have a great idea for a session! Can I suggest it anyway?
Yes, you can. Just note that you won't be attending, and then others who are interested in modding that session can leave a comment to volunteer to take it on.

How many sessions can I suggest?
As many as you want, though PLEASE glance through the ones already posted first to be certain yours isn't a repeat. Comments on posts are welcome if you want to endorse or suggest a modification to something already posted.

How many sessions will I be able to mod?
You can mod up to TWO sessions at the con. If more than two panels of yours are voted into the schedule, you’ll be able to mod two of them, and other attendees can volunteer to mod the others. We want as many people as possible participating!

How are mods chosen?
If you suggest a session that is ultimately in the schedule, you get first dibs at modding it. If you want to find co-mods, there will be a process for finding them later on. If there is a session you didn't suggest but would love to mod, comment on the suggestion itself to express your interest to the originator. If there are any sessions without mods when the schedule is finalized, we'll make a post to ask for volunteers.

How will sessions be selected for the con?
Sessions will be selected by registered attendees, who will vote for sessions beginning on May 9. Further rounds of voting may be necessary, but the entire process will be transparent to all attendees. (Per the description above.)

Can I suggest a session where I read my paper about my personal theory of (whatever)?
No. As a general rule, if you could post it on your LJ and everyone could read it there, it's not well-suited for our con. What we’re aiming for in this con is the opportunity to interact face-to-face with other fans. Please consider a roundtable or a panel on the topic instead.

Can I suggest a session where I read my fic?
No. Again, if you could just post it on your LJ, it's not well-suited for our con. However, there will probably be scheduled fanfic readings in the common room throughout the con. In fact, if you’re interested in organizing such a reading, that would be awesome. There will be a post here on the LJ community about organizing common room activities in July.

Can we talk about porn, kinks, and so on?
YES!! Absolutely. This is a con for adults only, and we want you to be free to talk about whatever interests you in fandom.
