I don't believe I've had opportunity to read your (literary) writing, but I'd certainly be interested in doing so. I've linked folks to certain past public posts here, as they were too fantastic not to share. In general, the advice I've gotten from professional authors has been, "Persevere through rejection, don't self-publish, and don't quit your day job." Which also means yes, you can both write and direct. (I prefer stage manage and direct, but those days are no more.) I suppose a pertinent question would be: Would either writing or directing sufficiently hold your interest over a long period of time?
You've been in this spot for a long time. *hug* I am not here to comfort just to let you know, that I said once that if ever you need to talk, even just to get things out, I'm around. I still hold to that.
I think you just have to honestly figure out what you're passionate about and pursue it.

And I don't know if I could direct for a living... I think yes.
