Take a look of what I found in the Archives of the Los Angeles Herald via the Library of Congress (Sorry, LJ makes the images tiny and low resolution). I was estatic when I found the scan. But sad for Monica and maybe Nettie too?
I really didn't expect a different outcome, but still sad to see it in B&W, plus so soon after the book was written. Also I would think even just their acquaintance would be frowned upon. Afterall, Monica was an older, beautiful, independent woman of the world, traveling on her own and a entertainer (singer?). I doubt they even were in the same social circles. Monica even mentions this on Aug 11. What has me scratching my head is that she says she was wondering if they would ever meet. Not "ever meet again". Then on Jan 11 - "I wish I knew you personally..." Huh? Was their relationship just by letters and phone calls? A mystery.
No, Monica never mentions her looks - but she does describe "the most beautiful woman..." and her manager says they could be sisters - therefore Monica is beautiful too. Besides, she would have to be attractive to be in the profession she is in.
Yeah, reading between the lines, but that is what makes this so much fun.
