[Locked Transmission to Residents]
It's getting to be that time again, so an update to this log should be done. For those who have been here long enough to know of this system, I will be summing up previous posts. Because of the way this system is set up, referencing and archiving these posts through normal journal communication is impossible.
Welcome to our new arrivals. My name is Albert Silverberg, and I am one of the many residents here in Luceti. If you have read the guide, I am the one who constructed a calendar for residents' use. I observe and keep track of various happenings in Luceti, which I have somehow been fortunate enough to be present for 21 months. I am using a secure system filtered directly to residents with journals; nothing written within this system can be viewed by the Malnosso Organization.

To reemphasize a point written in the guide, the journals are not secure. Any information passed through the journals is immediately compiled by the Malnosso, so anything important you wish to talk about should be done off of the journals. This system I am using is unlike the journal network and was arranged by Jacob, a former member of the Malnosso Organization.
The Malnosso Organization and the traitors
Contrary to popular belief, the Malnosso did not bring us to Luceti; we have been drawn into this world by something beyond even the Malnosso's control. The Malnosso possess superior technology that allows them to watch our movements and control the environment that we are imprisoned within -- the area within the barrier. This allows them to perform experiments that affect everyone within the barrier.
The Malnosso, as well as the people within the village we have long called "the Filial," are also not from Luceti; much like us, they are here from other worlds, though they definitely have the advantage of an established hierarchy in the form of an "research organization."
According to a recently-appearing entity called ANI, the Malnosso Organization's goals have changed numerous times in the last 200 years. Their current 'public objective' is "to locate a means with which to travel between our worlds." While the Malnosso undoubtedly have ulterior motives, it is with this objective in mind that we have worked with two people within the Malnosso Organization.
These traitors, aliases John and Jacob, have assisted us with learning about our situation. Jacob was a sympathizer who believed that helping us will help him return to his own world -- another version of Earth that may or may not coincide with other versions of Earth mentioned by other residents. It should be noted that we have not heard from Jacob since the barrier was cracked two months ago; he is believed to have been killed during those events.
John is a scientist whose main interest is conducting research, whether or not it complies with the Malnosso Organization's procedures. He has developed a way to reverse death penalties, though there are certain criteria that have to be met before he can even attempt. He also holds some clout among the other Malnosso scientists, as they allow him to do what he likes; this is likely because of the value of his research. They are the only ones from the Organization we have had any reason to converse with freely; the other Malnosso antagonize, taunt, and threaten us when they deem it necessary to talk to us.
From various talks with the two, a few things are certain. The Malnosso, like us, have wings; they were similarly affected by the crack in the barrier two months ago. They do not have barcodes; the barcodes on our own necks are a method of tracking that the Malnosso use on us.
The outside of the barrier, Shifting, and ANI
While we currently have no way to make use of the information, we are aware that there are other people outside of the barrier. We cannot communicate with them, but they are similarly brought to this place. It appears that our placement within the barrier is deliberate, and likely by the Malnosso's design.
There are numerous, unexplainable Shifts that can disrupt the Malnosso's experiments and change the results of repeated experiments. As John explains it, a Shift is "physical, mathematical, mental or subcultural alteration" from an outside source; we cannot normally see these changes as they happen. This Shifting is likely the reason why, despite having been here for an indeterminate time longer than any of us, the Malnosso have not made significant progress in finding a way home. There are two types of Shifting -- natural and synthesized (the latter of John's creation). The barrier around us is a product of synthesized Shifting and is supposed to protect us from the natural Shifting going on outside of the barrier.
When the barrier fails... Well. That will be discussed later.
ANI (Automated Neutral Intelligence) is an artificial lifeform that is not affiliated with the Malnosso. It is an observer to our situation and gathers information for its creator. This creator is currently unknown to us, and we do not know where ANI or its creator are located. ANI provides us insight into how the Malnosso operate; we know they have research outposts that we cannot see and that they have been around for centuries. This cycle we are currently in is just one of many previous experiment cycles the Malnosso have gone through.
There have been mentions of a "third party" that also affects the situations the Malnosso deal with. We do not know who or what this third party is, or what the term refers to.
The incident two months ago
Since there have been references to what happened two months ago, I will explain for those who have not heard already. The Malnosso were in the process of making adjustments to the barrier when something went wrong, causing the barrier to "crack." Whatever conditions there are outside seeped into barrier, affecting many of the residents -- and the Malnosso.
Many were "possessed" in some sense by the spirits inhabiting Luceti. These possessions appeared to be based on some individual affinity, and the level of possession varied greatly throughout the populace. Magical powers were enhanced based on the spirit that possessed an individual, and wings enlarged to a size that could support flight. Wings also shifted in color according to the spirit possessing an individual (e.g., if one was possessed by Sona, their wings would change to something in the blue spectrum). Personalities were also shown to change according to the spirit involved.
Most of those who were not affected had no form of elemental affinity.
Apparently the spirits that we have interacted with here in Luceti were not meant to exist; they were not brought here in the same manner we were, and it is unknown how long they have been in existence.
The Malnosso referred to those affected as "hybrids" and considered them abominations. We were offered the ultimatum to kill the hybrids ourselves, or they would take matters into their own hands. When we failed to comply, the Malnosso set about killing hybrids in various gruesome ways (the final death count was at 10, if my records are correct). We have John to thank that there were not more casualties on our side before the barrier was repaired.
As a final note, it should be noted that this is not the only time current residents have seen the barrier fail in some way. The other time the barrier fell (ten months ago now), the sky went red and everyone's wing feathers fell off. This effect was also a result of a Shift, giving us an example of just how different one Shifting can be from another.
