Instinct is to stiffen and try to stand a little straighter. He might not know Hinata as well as some of their other friends, but she's still an old classmate, and one of his comrades. There's no need to worry her, when they're both probably worried about the others.] Aa... hey, Hinata.
Reply
She greets Hinata.] Hi. [Small smile, because it's easy enough to drop if necessary.] Do you two know each other?
Reply
Yet hearing her name has her snapping back to herself and no longer hesitating. She's stepping forward and returning that small smile even as she takes in everything she can about his condition, their closeness, everything. ]
[ To Shikamaru: ] Welcome back...
[ And then she can't help clasping her hands in front of her as she debates on how much to tell her. ] And, um, yes. We're from the same village...and class.

Hinata, this is Katara. She's a friend of me and Chouji.

[Good, we're friends, so let's move along.] There's something wrong with his. It's almost like he's used it all up.
[WHICH SHOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE. You do not just do these things to your sacred life energy, man.]

[ All right, now that that's cleared up (because if Shikamaru says they're friends, then...there's not much to worry about there), she's doing as asked. She may not sigh outwardly, but she is on the inside. At least one of them seems to know healing beyond the basics.
But moving to help support his other side just means that when she hears the next part, she's in an easier position to check him over. Even though she'll hold off on using the byakugan until he's laying down. Using up all of one's chakra is something they all know not to do. ]
I know quite a bit. It's...something my family specializes in. Though...that sounds like chakra exhaustion. It's not too bad unless he used up too much than can be replenished.
Was it really so bad out there..?
Reply
I didn't use all of it. I'm not stupid. [That would kill him. As it is, Hinata's diagnosis is right on the mark, and he nods - bot to that, and her question.]
...yeah. It was more or less a non-stop fight out there. [He grunts, closing his eyes once and trying to clear his vision.] There wasn't a lot of time to rest up.
[He would've been fine, if it weren't for that. Four days straight of fighting, however, isn't ideal when your jutsus eat up so much chakra.
...and because he knows it'd be on her mind, especially with Naruto and Shino having fought out there:] The others were doing better than I was, last time I saw them.

'Chakra exhaustion?' One of these days, she is going to have to sit you all down and quiz you about how this works, because that just sounds so very not good. Katara's relieved that there's someone around who actually knows about this type of stuff so that she doesn't have to rely as much on guesswork.
To Hinata:] How is it usually replenished?
[And to Shikamaru, because they're almost in the tent and she still doesn't see Chouji-] When was the last time you saw them?
Reply
Normally, time. It just takes a few days rest, and...food. It's not that complicated, just... It takes time.
[ And though the entire situation doesn't call for it, she can't help the small smile at Katara's second question. She was just about to ask that very same question. Because 'last time' can imply so many different times over four days. ]
Yes... I'd like to know that, too.

Someone mentioned seeing them though, when I was trying to catch up to them out there. That was just a few hours before I wound up here.
[Chouji and Naruto have freak stamina, and were both doing fine in that department when they left that morning. So if someone saw them alive, which they did, he's confident they'd have made it out all right. And Shino is smart - he above all, Shikamaru can trust to take care of himself.
He doesn't think any of them are dead - that much should be obvious. Whether they're hurt or not is what he's concerned with. So now he just needs visual confirmation.
And into the tent they go, then.]
Reply
But now that they're in the tent, Katara directs them over to the nearest cot so as to lower Shikamaru down.]
Don't lay down yet. If this is something normally healed by rest then we need to take care of your cuts first, and you said your back was sore. [She flicks a quick glance at his face.] And I need you to stay conscious until Hinata and I have checked out your chi -- chakra. Got it?
Reply
Um, even if he does lay down before we check his chakra, it'll be all right. I don't need him awake for that.
Reply
[He has nothing else to say, as Hinata makes the only point he had to add to that. Explaining that is her business, if she chooses to, and talking right now is troublesome anyways. As is staying awake, but he's also interested in seeing the conditions of the other draftees trickling in, so he thinks he can manage that one a little longer.]
Reply
But we need to make sure everything's flowing [a brief hesitation as she remember's Chouji's horribly messed up pathways] the way it should before we let him rest.
Let me take a look at your back.
[And she maneuvers over to do just that.]
Reply
Well, it wouldn't be all that bad to tell a little.
She steps a little bit closer to Shikamaru and Katara, as helping to treat the injured is the reason she's here. ]
Here, I'll help. [ She pauses as she thinks of how to word this... ] And, um, with...with my eyesight. I don't need him awake to see or even to fix his pathways. If I do...it wouldn't be hard to wake him.
