Who: Everyone! What: The event has started! When: From the beginning of the event until the end. Where: EVERYWHERE Summary: You're feeling a bit different today. Rating: All over the place, yo.
[Robert shakes his head gently.] That still doesn't account for the species discrepancies, or the made-up wars, or the dreams we had of our real lives - and I know, you're gonna say they weren't real, that the Malnosso made 'em up too. But if you start questioning the reality of everything, you're not gonna have a rational leg to stand on. [He looks over at Mulder again, almost intensely.] With the kind of paranoia you have right now, you're going to be in a constant state of panic, here. Why don't you save that fear for what really happens to us in this place? That's bad enough already without you making it worse!
[Mulder sighs, knowing that he can't do anything about that, so he'll remain without his best source of sanity. Not that it probably would have made a difference in this state anyway.]
Well, I know they drug the water. Catherine put something in there before the draft. So what's stopping them from doing it again? Maybe even all the time, without our knowledge.
[This gives even Robert pause. He does remember poignantly how Catherine announced that.]
You're right. Nothing's stopping them from drugging the drinking water. But by that same admission, nothing stops them from drugging the water in the rest of the enclosure too - the whole place is artificial, remember. Nothing stops 'em from drugging the air too, or drugging... anything.
... And that's the thing with the Malnosso. Nothing really stops 'em from doing much of anything, in this place.
But! The main thing to consider is whether it'd be worth their time. Why would they bother drugging the water all the time if they can just mess around with us whenever they like? They don't need drugs to do that. Have they ever had to drug us for the village-wide Shifting experiments before? What purpose would drugging us solve that they can't already do?
It just seems... like a waste of effort, but what do I know? I'm not the Malnosso - they just seem to basically be crazy and do whatever they want.
[It's not comforting, but it's not a complete
( ... )
But they're probably doing something to us anyway, and if it's not through drugging the water, it's something related to Shift-technology... [Mulder looks around fearfully again, and abruptly changes course when he decides that "They" are onto the direction they're going in.] And it doesn't stop with the environment, think of what else they could have done to us. The wings, the barcodes, there has to be something else hidden that we don't know of yet...
[Robert tries to keep his voice reasonable.] If there is, what more could it do to, or take from, us that this place hasn't already? Considering the Malnosso changed our species, memories, and other stuff without any trouble, I don't see why they'd need implants to do much else.
... And even if they did, what can we really do? I hate to be a defeatist, but I think it'd be even worse if we tried to go digging through ourselves. That might just get us kidnapped to be experimented on awhile, knowing the Malnosso.
[Mulder listens to the explanation, his paranoia deepening by the moment. He glances over his shoulder a few times. No one there. Their disguises are getting even better.]
Then... what can we do? Robert, they're everywhere we go, watching everything we do, controlling all aspects of our lives... [Lowers his voice considerably:] Their spies are tailing us as we speak.
I agreed with you up until the last one. [Robert's tone is just a little sarcastically flat there.] There's absolutely nobody here, Mulder.
... And again, they control everything about this place, so why would they even need spies?
[Really, Mulder, this is just getting ridiculous at this point. Nearly-omniscient scientists that ostensibly monitor the entire compound should not need spies to get information.]
[Mulder tries hard to follow the logic, even if the panic is overwhelming his ability to be logical. More even than usual.]
...but then... but then... What can we do about that? With them watching our every move, what can we do? There's no escape is there? They'll get tired of us, or lose their use for us eventually... Then we'll all die, locked away in their lab!
If they kept us here this long - some of us for three years or more - and they've bothered to spend all this time, effort and energy keeping us alive, then there's some reason they bother.
The question is why, really. And I don't think any of us can answer that.
[It frustrates Robert that there's no obvious reason, but he's convinced that the Malnosso won't just let them perish if they can help it.]
Believe me, Mulder, it bugs me too. But what can we do about it, other than trying to learn more? [Robert shrugs helplessly, gnawing his bottom lip gently.]
There's one thing I can say for sure about the Malnosso: they're really good at hiding useful information from us.
[And Robert actually looks down a moment, betraying a little weakness. Not as much as he normally would - he's not as open now that he can actually understand and mediate his emotions - but he's still comfortable enough with Mulder to show that.]
... Yeah.
I wish I could do something about it too, Mulder. We all do. Nobody likes to be looked at like a sample, with no protocol or anything. No say in what stuff they get from us.
... It's unfair, but that's kinda the way it is until we can find some way to deal with the Malnosso.
... That's him over there, isn't it? Studying that tree oddly?]
Something wrong with that Acer platanoides, Fox?

[He softens a little at the next part, though.]
I wish she was too, for your sake.

[To the point of such insane paranoid, even.]

[Mulder can't help looking around still, afraid of being watched by just about anyone, for any purpose.]

We can't go on like this indefinitely. We've got to do something, especially before they lose interest in us and maybe even forget to send us home...

I'd rather be here, if it means getting to be with all my friends. [I didn't have that at home.]
